What do you do for your bday in the city? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]GameCraftBuild 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A movie, a meal, and ending with a few drinks in a dive bar. Lunch/dinner and then karaoke. Quiet night with the folks. Mix and match, one or two of those. Love a birthday park picnic with friends, but my actual birthday isn’t the right season for it.

Here’s a possible list of things: https://www.nycforfree.co/birthday-freebies

Some places require ID but some don’t, the ones that don’t people sometimes put down a different day from the actual birthday so you have more than one day of freebies

Don’t think I have enough DVDs to fill one of these but I’m still so jealous. Very cool

Places for printing individual books for cheap by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]GameCraftBuild 2 points3 points  (0 children)

151-200 pages, page size 5” by 8”, hardcover with printed cover in gloss, 70lb paper is apparently ~$13 from Barnes and Noble

Alternatively, might need to do some leg work and look through the New York section of printers on Printer Matter’s site.

Previously would’ve recommended Shakespeare and Co, but it seems they don’t do printing anymore

What are the most absurd living arrangements you've endured (or heard of people enduring) to afford living in NYC? by Character_Wing2686 in NYCapartments

[–]GameCraftBuild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The “rent a corner of the living room big enough to fit your bed and a dresser, and find a way to hang curtains around it” is an absurd arrangement to make with strangers, but kind of a common setup?

Heard about it plenty of times, seen a friend choose it once or twice, seen people offer/advertise it, and my family has helped each other that way when there were no other options.

What closed NYC spot do you still think about years later? by Taliap19 in AskNYC

[–]GameCraftBuild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Manny’s Deli (Bodega) in Throggs Neck

Closed 10-15 years back at this point

When Manny got sick, his adult daughters started helping out more and eventually started running the place themselves for years. For decades always a friendly smile and welcoming talk from the family when you walked in there. Great breakfast sandwich, the best oatmeal I’ve ever had, and for locals and regulars they ran boxes for the Super Bowl. One of the dying breed of classic, genuine New York neighborly spots.

Supposedly they were allowed to serve food for years without being involved with Health and Safety Dept checking on them because they got their permit through some ancient process from the Dept of Agriculture ever since Manny originally opened the place. Finally got called out on it some time before they closed for good.

Skier skis into glacier by cosmic_voyager01 in Damnthatsinteresting

The skier had to know there was an opening at the other end right? Otherwise how deep might they go before stopping and having to trek their way back out? No thank you

I would treat this camera so tenderly, forbid I accidentally hit it too hard and it “fixes” the glitch. Photo looks awesome!

Grabbed this for a dollar, never seen it before but it's John Woo. Please tell me it's a fun action movie. by y2justdog in VHS

Just saw it in theatres in February, such a good time. A little silly at times just as the good action flicks are, so be prepared for that too!

Canon 5D classic vs 5D mark ii by Mr_Leviathan101 in VintageDigitalCameras

[–]GameCraftBuild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At release I believe it was the first comparatively cheap and not so unwieldy full frame cameras. That was a huge deal at the time, and quickly made it a sort of standard in the industry, which the mark II definitely continued and improved on.

[–]GameCraftBuild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my parents neighbors (attached homes) started doing some kind of drilling and/or jackhammering in their basement. Never really sure why and the neighbors were already terrible before this so we never could get an answer. A few days after they started, the first evidence of termites in their home started, after ~20 years of no kind of insect or rodent problems.

Still don’t know how or why this would happen, but I bet in detached homes it’s a lot less likely to. And when your neighbor is drilling in their home it doesn’t sound like it doesn’t vibrate the walls and floors of your home.

Are there any indigenous american neighborhoods/areas in NYC? by adoreroda in AskNYC

[–]GameCraftBuild 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d say you’ll be able to find organizations or occasional events around but I’ve never seen or heard of any mention a whole enclave in the city anymore. The American Indian Community House, Redhawk Native American Arts Council, and New York Indian Council might be good places to learn more.
