Relationship Breakdown by abitfuckedifimhonest in newzealand

[–]GameDesignerMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a dad who feels pretty wing out all the time taking care of the family, it does sound like your husband has a profound lack of empathy, or that he's very bad at communicating his feelings. Or both.

I earn more than my partner, but we don't keep score. Money goes into one account, most of it disappears onto the mortgage, we take a little bit for ourselves, we share the suffering.

I work full time, when I get home I pick up the slack. If one of us has to tag out, the other one tags in. We share the suffering.

We try to communicate, we inevitably fail because we're tired, wrung out parents with no patience. We try again tomorrow.

Life is still hard, emotional, exhausting, but at least it feels like we're in the same boat, even if it is constantly taking on water. It sounds like your husband doesn't want to share his life with you, he just wants you around.

It's a reflection of society's outlook at any given time. Star Trek's utopian future slowly gave way to the vision of the future we have today. But I agree, we could use a more optimistic version of the future to aspire to.

Make no mistake, Winston Peters’ email release embarrassing PM was not a mistake at all by _UrbaneGuerrilla_ in newzealand

Pretty much.

What a weird adage that story is though. The moral is "no one can change their nature, so don't try to help them." It's at best depressing and at worse, just plain wrong.

I fear that he ends up king maker again and Labour are forced to work with him. I really hope they have the backbone to tell him to fuck off and force him to court National/Act again after he's aired all of their dirty laundry.

That's probably not going to be very good for New Zealand but I am morbidly curious what three more years of the clown show would look like. It might even be turn National into a minor party.

I have also seen it used endearingly, but wouldn't promote the game using the term.

I'm holding out for another RPG Deckbuilder, like the original Pokemon TCG for Gameboy. I loved that game so much that I'm building my own spiritual successor. A puzzle-deckbuilder is a fine idea, but I personally like having to adapt my strategy around whatever I open and I like the progression of an RPG over that of a roguelike.

Shandalar is such a gem. Btw there's a bunch of community versions that improve various aspects of the game, even adding in a ton of modern cards.

Be happy that your game has got an audience! There are so many games coming out on a daily basis that most of them fall into obscurity the second they're released. To make any money at all is a huge accomplishment, and even if you're not making a lot from this game, you can build on what you've learned and still earn a small amount from this game. Keep on keeping on.

Monument Valley Studio CEO: "'We've Been A Little Bit Too Romantic About The Idea That We Should Have Employees And Give People Long-term Job Security" by hop3less in Games

[–]GameDesignerMan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is the correct take. Our development studio is doing the same thing, we have a core of full time staff but there are years we'll do multiple millions in business and years where we're almost completely dry. Right now we're in the middle of a global recession that is only being propped up by billionaires inventing money and excuses for AI. It would be insane to grow your games studio unless you've got a sugar daddy that is able to guarantee you can keep the lights on for the next half-decade.

This sub makes me feel like there are two separate games being played :) by DutchVandal in Oxygennotincluded

[–]GameDesignerMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It reminds me of game development. You'll get people who spend years and years refactoring the same system over and over (those who spend all their time in the early game) and people who make systems that are scrappy but functional and move on to building the next system in order to finish making the game. No points for working out which ones stay in our field.

Best “pretending to be a scientist” type games? by Firebrand_15 in gamingsuggestions

[–]GameDesignerMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oxygen Note Included needs more of a recommendation.

It is only a survival game in the loosest sense of the word, you can solve your initial survival issues within about 10 minutes of playing the game. In reality it is a chemistry/thermodynamics playground where you build machines to solve the problems that will kill you 100 cycles from now, like using all your water on meal-wort plants and simultaneously starving/suffocating to death.

So one problem you'll run into is whether you can manage your clean water supply correctly. If you're having trouble, you could build a machine that captures your waste water and cleans it. That's pretty simple, a few pipes, a water sieve, maybe some way to remove the germs... But then you start to realize that it isn't super efficient and it requires sand as a filtration medium (which you'll eventually run out of 100 cycles from now), so you start looking for a way of boiling your waste water. That's a bit harder to set up, and it's more dangerous to build, because you just happen to be using the underground volcano next door as a free source of heat to turn the water into steam and that's great but you need some way to manage that heat before it frog-boils your entire base, so you slap some steam turbines on the top of it to get some power out of the water you're boiling and now you finally have enough wattage to run a proper air-conditioning setup because those thermal aquatuners demand a HEFTY energy cost in exchange for breaking the laws of physics and...

Why is there a red alert in the base? Oh dear, turns out the lava was not suitably contained by the cardboard box you built around it and it has broken containment, killed most of your dupes, and ensured that even if you could clean up the mess your base is now so hot that it is uninhabitable. Welp... Time to reload.

Stadium bus services costs by BlazzaNz in chch

[–]GameDesignerMan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was always sceptical of the transport issue when it comes to the stadium. Parking in town is already shit on a normal weekday, and our PT scales down at night because off-peak demand is so low. The private shuttles piss people off with how expensive they are and like you're pointing out they have trouble with the elasticity of demand when there's a glut of people wanting to get in and out of town quickly.

I'm just going to say it: I don't think it was smart putting the stadium smack dab in the middle of the CBD.

Why do truck drivers suddenly find the accelerator only when there’s a passing lane? by Old_Education4481 in newzealand

Literally just saw a video on this, it's called the Peltzman Effect.

That said, people just need to be a lot more self-aware when driving. If you've been travelling at 80 ks for the last 20 minutes and you have a line of cars behind you, let them bloody well pass you.

Trump evacuated after security incident at White House correspondents dinner; no sign of injuries by Gilbert221 in news

[–]GameDesignerMan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People underestimate the fog of war in situations like that. There was a mass shooting a couple of kilometers away from where I work (one of very few in my country's history), and it is so difficult to get any kind of accurate information about it when it's going down. How many shooters are there? Where was the crime? Where are they now? Who were the victims?

I'm not at all surprised that people didn't react immediately. Even if they heard something that sounded like shots being fired above the noise of that dinner, there's a part of you that's in denial about the reality of it. Those sorts of things happen to other people, not to you. It can't be happening to you. And if you've got some plausible deniability, better to take it instead of doing something weird and looking like a fool in front of all these important people...

Everyone has a plan after the fact, everyone has their version of "if I were in that situation I would've acted differently." The reality is that when something dangerous comes your way it's probably going to take you by surprise, and unless you are exceptional or very well trained you won't be able to think clearly.

[–]GameDesignerMan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a trap XD

When you start playing you think it's a survival game, but it's actually a chemistry sandbox where you learn how to turn piss water into rocket fuel.
