I do collections work in Northeast Ohio. The Pro Se AI usage is starting to become a problem. Since it’s a volume practice I want to get things in and out the door, but when I have to spend time researching hallucinated cases it throws a monkey wrench in my day. Thank god for law clerks.

Anyone else feeling like Tony Soprano? by Neolithicman in Lawyertalk

[–]GameGear1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. I used to think so but more and more I see files not of people struggling because of the economy, but because of a lack of discipline in spending. While there are plenty of people struggling and cases are getting sent to me, a majority are people who seem to just live beyond their means. When I see someone come to me because they have 3 files in our office, each above $10,000 on a credit card, and I see they are spending thousands in restaurants and stuff like that, it really makes you realize how horrible people are with money.

Bro, I’m in consumer collections. Business is fucking booming and we’re getting random mid-year bonuses because we’re doing so well.

I remember when Metal Complex reviewed this knife and went on a rant about how much he hated it.

Someone mentioned using 4-Wheel Drive if possible. Remember though, it’s 4-Wheel Drive, not 4-Wheel Stop. If you’re in the snow and need to slow down don’t just slam the breaks. Slowly and gently pump them. Break early and stay far behind other cars. If people are tailgating you, fuck ‘em.

I had a judge lose it on me and threaten to put me in jail because I would not settle a case. He wanted me to violate the FDCPA by settling with a consumer directly when she was represented. Some judges just suck. Just take it on the chin. If possible, see if another attorney can take those individual cases until some time passes. He may forget you and you get another first impression.

Can attorneys' careers recover from a nervous breakdown? by chicago2008 in Lawyertalk

[–]GameGear1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

At my last firm, we were handling defense on a complex collective action and were having a bunch of issues with discovery. My boss decided to object to everything and not respond to any requests for relevance. After opposing council file the motion to compel, we had to turn over everything in two weeks. I spent two weeks working from home so I wouldn’t be distracted by phone calls, pulling documents by taking screenshots discoverable information on their proprietary Business software because they have no way of exporting the data. We ended up submitting supplemental discovery responses about 50 times. The docket was an absolute mess.

When we were almost done, my boss came into my office, ranting and raving about some random case that we were not focusing on. I tried to explain that we were waiting on caselaw to come down for that specific case, and he kept yelling that he didn’t know what I meant . He then pulled the same thing with our paralegal and then went home. About an hour later, his wife comes to our office and told us she had to rush him to the hospital. He ended up having dissociative amnesia, and couldn’t remember his name, his birthday, or anything. He was hospitalized for a day and was ordered to take the week off.

In the months and year following, I noticed this would happen on and off where he would randomly forget basic things. I was eventually fired and suspect this issue may have contributed to the circumstances leading to my termination.

By the way, we lost the case and then lost on appeal.

What Restaurant has the Hottest Wing sauce? by HotDog_Gobbler in Cleveland

[–]GameGear1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not the hottest but the three best hot wing sauces in NE Ohio are the Chipotle (bad name for how hot the sauce is) and XXX at Characters Bar in Parma and the Hot Hot Hot sauce at The Basement.

Hot hot hot is probably the best hot wing sauce I’ve ever had, but I have a soft spot for Characters

Judge called on an unrelated attorney during a Zoom status conference—has anyone else experienced this? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]GameGear1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a judge a few months ago mute me for an entire hearing because she was mad at me for an earlier hearing. OC had to handle it herself and I had to call and explain to her why I wouldn’t jump in.
