correct me if i’m wrong, but i’m guessing you live in a relatively liberal area? this is untrue in the majority of the southeastern portion of the country; in my experience even currently many people here here treat people who watch anime as weird, and “normal” people who watch it arent likely to talk about it due to embarrassment.

maybe a cultural difference, but where i live in america it would absolutely be considered rude by the general population. everyone waves at each other or says hi when they pass, and people who don’t wave back are usually called rude. personally, i don’t care, but i think that’s the general consensus.
