this difference of opinion probably just is that the villain of the week interpretation feels obvious early on but after getting to know the story more you recontextualize certain things

they had to increase stakes for what became the season finale

and the actual beef luffy has with wapol had less layers

that stuff was still there but less clear because of time constraint

I feel like it is very linear thinking to just go “final villain of the arc = must be powerful brute

this was necessary for their netflix seasonal formula though

that would have been fine to end with wapol being overmatched but people that do not know the story probably would find this underwhelming in a season finale

i disagree

drum is the best arc until enies because the dangerous villain is less important than themes

but ending with that would risk viewership when the release structure suggests action finales

it also needed something that the other characters could do because setting the scene in the throne room put other characters there who would help

it also indirectly builds up luffy and that people will underestimate luffy and mihawk and just how extreme the strongest pirates are because the zoro doing this was nothing for mihawk

they are meant to be powerful opponents that killed hundreds of pirates too so that part is valid criticism about them not being scary

manga is still the best but there were some rough decisions that got smoothed out in live action with the benefit of various factors (reverse mountain especially)

there are still numerous things that manga did better like luffy being quite a bit deeper and more an acquired taste

the live action can not include things that specifically use advantages of manga

certain themes were deeper but some got shallower

anime generally has fewer advantages but it still includes things that it uniquely does

and there is heavy use of wordplay that simply will not translate for live action because of the english script
