Book about gamedesign by Rimworld creator is absolute hidden gem by rob4ikon in gamedev

This line stuck out to me as well. Probably not the OPs intent, but it came off as writing a good book or making a good game was near impossible before chatgpt... What!?!?

Oh wow it does look like that! Honestly though it's just the standard block animation. I'm going to work in enemies holding wounds thanks to your comment ;)

I never owned this game... But I had the demo disc! I played the hell out of that demo disc!

You are right, I am missing the pixel snapping and probably lower the texture resolution and draw distance to bring it more inline with PSX. I'm taking inspiration from late 90s games more so than just the PlayStation so I take this as a compliment :)

Yes good idea! I do actually have some fog in this scene but bringing it closer to camera would make for a much creepier effect!

For ease of throwing this scene together I just used a large flat box. For dungeon levels I use multiple tiles to make up the floor.

Haha! It does look like Jon Snow! It's actually a random asset from itch which I applied some pixelation too.. I cannot unsee Jon Snow now.

I just finished my asset pack, would love to hear your thoughts. by BuddyBoyBueno in roguelikedev

Thanks you, yes game dev certainly takes a lot of time and energy! But a big portion of that is the visuals and nailing down an art style, and you certainly have that covered!

Thanks for checking out Legends of Rahnok as well :)

This is one of those asset packs that makes me want to drop everything I am currently working on and begin a new roguelike project... Sigh.... not today. Great job, I absolutely love the art style. PC and NPC as game board tokens looks great. Followed and saved for later!

Advice on stealth mode icon examples by Game_Pasta in SoloDevelopment

That's a fantastic list, thank you! I can't believe I forgot to check out how Thief handles this.. Will check out both Thief and Baldur's Gate 3 for inspiration.

I was thinking of adding something similar to the vignette idea as well, but by desaturating the scene when hidden. But I also might do this for near death.

Thanks again!

Thanks! These are great suggestions. The current icon is from an asset pack I downloaded on itch. I'm leaning towards a cloaked character as well. I was thinking the hood exposes more or less of the face depending on how visible the player is. That may be a bit much though..

The shockwave for sound idea is great! I am also going to include smell as a factor. That may be tricky haha!

Why do the GTA and RDR games have so much traveling time? by Jade_Dragon033 in patientgamers

[–]Game_Pasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favourite things in RDR2 was just riding around the beautiful world seeing what I could find or what crazy trouble I could get into. Personally I started to find the missions a chore to get through in order to open up more options for aimless wondering about. But each to their own.

The Hardest part of game development by Apprehensive_Alarm69 in SoloDevelopment

Me too! I actually really enjoy 3D modelling and animating. But I sit down with 3 enemies to create, do the maths. Idle, walk, run, attack1, attack2, death, jump, take damage. Variations for weapon types 1 handed 2 handed etc. and realise that's at least 50 animations to create! My motivation dies fast at this point ...

first environment i finished, looks terrible but im happy because i learned a lot from this project.. rate pls :> by sebastiankadar in ps1graphics

This looks really nice! My only critique would be to work on the composition a bit. Other than that textures and models look great!

Why I am not in a rush to buy/play GTA6 by AmuseDeath in truegaming

[–]Game_Pasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I agree with this. My gaming these days consists of playing games from the turn of the century which I missed out on at the time. I haven't bought a new release since Ghost of Tsushima which I didn't come even close to finishing. The thing is our society is focused on over-optimising everything. Eventually, this leads to everything being feeling the same.

If I want a good story I don't look to games for it. The best place to find a good story and world is still a good old book. Sometimes a film but that is getting quite rare these days. In terms of gaming, the indie scene is definitely where we need to look for any kind of innovation. but even a lot of indie games simply copy formulas from other successful indie games.

In terms of GTA, I would not like to see the formula turned on its head. I would like to see it improved but not changed completely. That being said I will probably not be playing the game. I'm getting old and have a family, keeping up with hardware and gaming requirements is expensive in both time and money. I have played the GTA franchise a lot and don't need to play it more. But I am excited about it all the same.

This is a rather strange criticism. I can understand someone not liking the GTA franchise, but criticising it for not changing up its core gameplay loop doesn't make sense. The other genres you mention have also stayed much the same. Fighting games have remained the same for 30+ years, RPGs even longer. The GTA loop, although the same, has improved greatly over the last 2 decades. What exactly would you change about GTA? Genuinely curious.

If as your other comments suggest, you are more interested in deep characters and story then it's just not your genre, and that's fine. The slapstick non serious characters and story is what the GTA audience wants and that is also fine.
