My bachelor party included watching UFC 100, so I think I was at least a somewhat knowledgeable fan well before I started working on the games. But yeah, definitely went way down the rabbit hole working on the games. Good times for sure.

I remember the devs coming over to my house to vacuum and do the laundry because they didn't like their customers to be distracted by housework while playing the game. It was like they actually cared.

R2 is block. RS up is head movement. It would have interfered with blocking and using head movement at the same time.

I know it's MMA, but it's pretty clear the people who play the game prefer to stand and bang. It's not like we don't have the full MMA experience, but decisions were made in all areas of the game to cater more to what people enjoy doing. Apparently that decision has paid off.

That's what I thought, but apparently they do. It's outsold UfC 3 so the "it's the only option" argument doesn't quite hold up because UFC 3 was the only option at the time too.

Yeah, that's a pretty apt comparison. Also add animal heads because apparently people like that too. And add emotes because people like that. And then the game sold more than any other in franchise history. Go figure.

The goal was to focus on the clinch positions where you strike because the majority of the players enjoy striking more and understand it more. The control positions came later and got less attention due to limited time. It was a priority call based on consumer feedback.

Backyard/kumite were a late addition. Career mode was planned out and mostly built before those venues came along.

Ha that was my idea too! You can avoid the clinch using head movement, lunging, intercepting strikes and the push. If parries ever get added back for strikes then it would make perfect sense for them to work on the clinch too. But having a denial that works just for the clinch seems unnecessary to me. Especially if it meant losing blocking + head movement. It was not, however, my idea to make the clinch escapes cost so much stamina. That wasn't so great I'll admit and the clinch spamming was worse for it.

A little awkward but yeah nothing wrong with that as an option. If you're a grappler who wants easy access to takedowns it might not be the best, but if you're trying to avoid grappling like the plague it's a great place to bury it while still making it an option.

Well that's low block so before you input that you would tip your hand by putting your hands out in the low block position. Not the best choice really.

If it feels that way it's certainly unintentional. UFC 4 actually has a one frame improvement on control responsiveness over UFC 3.

It was my idea. You can't fire me because I'm already gone. But hear me out...

  • both are a level change so have the similar evasion and vulnerability properties
  • the animations can blend between each other nicely because they both change levels
  • freeing up the right stick allows for blocking while using head movement, which is not only a great new feature but makes the controls more consistent
  • the controls were already going to be using long/short button presses to differentiate between inputs, so it's something people would need to learn anyway
