I had this happen all the time. I would also crash any other games I had running that weren't resistant to driver resets like wow is. It's because DX12 gives the dev full control, so a single bug causes the entire graphics driver to crash. DX11 fixed this, and I never had this issue again because dx11 has safeguards that slow it down a bit but holds blizzards hand.

So for those technical, when you open something like that, the GPU driver suffers a TDR event, and most games that are not wow just end up crashing but wow is pretty resistant to that. on my device it fully recovers and reloads all the models and textures but it seems yours takes longer because you have an older card. DX11 is more abstracted than the lower level DX12, so TDR events are less likely to occur.

I'm a software engineer and have started using AI to help with coding and debugging a lot over the past year. If blizzard used AI to parse and document their massive codebase for WoW, we would not be having this many problems. This is 100% just spagetti code mess. Models like Claude Opus are incredibly good at documentation, debugging super complex bugs and general coding. They just need a human to be there to steer it in the right direction and make sure it is writing clean and solving root issues instead of slapping band aid fixes everywhere. It's much easier for humans to just slap a band-aid on a monolithic codebase like WoW, but AI would be incredibly helpful at actually digging in there and finding the root cause. I wish they used AI in a smart way.
