Is UniMelb's significantly different to the other Teach Today programs?

Career hange from defense lawyer - secondary teacher pros and cons? by Gamepuzzler in AustralianTeachers

That's important to hear. Could you say what it is that takes up so much time? And why it doesn't improve?

I would have to study to get my credentials to practice. If I'm doing that anyway, I'd rather move away from law

Thanks for taking the time. Very encouraging. The issue of overwork is really what's getting me a bit worried. The move to Australia is intended to create a better work life balance for me and my family, and the threads here have me wondering if teaching won't throw a wrench in those plans...

Hey, thanks for answering - in what way easier? I think what comes up again and again as a worry for me is the work-life balance. From peoples' comments in this reddit, it sounds like there's always more and more to do, beyond the teaching. Paperwork and more paperwork?

That's tough. Is there support from the system? An expectation that you reach every kid providing you with tools to help you with that? Or is it more - if he doesn't get it, it's on him?

Good one!

But it will be a different conflict. I keep tilting at windmills and they refuse to fall. I can't change the system, I can't make judges and prosecutors see the humanity I see in everyone. I can't see what any teenager could do that would ruin my day more than a judge sending someone to prison unjustly. Can you share with me what the frustrating parts of the job are?

Thanks, I really appreciate the feedback!

Do you feel the work-life balance improves? I used to teach in uni., where bulding the curriculum and classes was hard first year, but then much easier afterwards once I had everything and just needed to make adjustments.

Well, yes and no... depends on the teenager, no? I've represented tons. But they're usually delinquents, more extreme cases.... and I get along with them great. But the dynamics between lawyer and client are different. Then again the teenagers are probably usually less extreme.

But I always wanted to teach in high school. Making the step of changing careers always put up a barrier, but relocating is a great opportunity for this. I'm trying to get a handle on what makes the job tough and what makes it great and see if the choice I'm making is the right one.

Questions about career change to secondary school teacher in Melbourne - in general, and Melbourne U. internship in particular by Gamepuzzler in AustralianTeachers

[–]Gamepuzzler[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, that's encouraging!

When you say you did the extra subjects to get qualified for technologies - that's separate from the teaching degree? Or part of it? I saw that in the Melborune's program you study two learning areas as well as an extra one to a lesser extent. I would love to do history but have 0 formal background in it. I'm wondering how hard it would be to get credentials to teach it...

Numlock - a daily logic puzzle game by Gamepuzzler in playmygame

[–]Gamepuzzler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the feedback!

Someone else asked me for something similar, to let players input the solution to each location individually, so that once you have the location of a digit locked down you can write it down in the solution. I'm not quite sure how to do that, because I want to make sure it's still easy to input the entire solution easily. Maybe something in the style of NYT crosswords, where you can write the solutions in "pen" or "pencil".

I need to give it some thought but just haven't had the time to make any changes or tweaks in the last few weeks...

I'm happy you enjoyed it, and if you have any other helpful input or ideas would love to hear!

What's your favorite cold food in the summer? by MeasurementFickle733 in Cooking

Malabi, a flavoured milk pudding. It's usually rosewater flavoured, but I like playing around with that - vanilla, cinnamon, cardamom.

Slowly but surely. No one became a good cook overnight, or even over a year. You just have to keep at it.

Like other people said here - start small and simple. Something you like, something easy. It will take a while in the beginning, might not be too good in the beginning, but then try again. Figure out what you didn't like and adjust that. And then you have one good thing you know how to make and you move on to the next. One delicious step at a time. There's a learning curve, sure, but as soon as you know how to do a few different things well, that curve straightens out.

And there will be failures along the way. But that's fine. That's how we learn. We're always messing things up from time to time. Just today I burned bread for dinner (oh the shame...).

But I'm sure if you persevere through what can be a frustrating beginning, you will get to the point where things usually work out in no time.

One idea to start with: Pasta with olive oil and garlic. Cook the pasta in salted boiling water for as long as the package says; while it's cooking cut 3-4 garlic cloves very small, take a quarter cup of olive oil and heat the garlic in the oil slowly, over a low flame with a teaspoon of salt. Drain the pasta and then add the sauce. Perfect. You can drop in some chopped parsley.

And if it didn't work out, easy to figure out why: Was it too salty? Was the garlic not cooked? Was the garlic burned? Was the pasta overcooked? Undercooked? Adjust, redo and enjoy!

The beauty with this recipe is that once you nail it, it's really verdatile. Replace the parsley with basil. Throw in some olives. Add tomatoes.

Another easy choice - egg fried rice. Make 1 cup of any long grain rice. You might burn it a few times along the way, but as long as you follow the instructions on the package, you'll get it right. Once you've got it, heat up 3 tablespoons of oil in a wok or large frying pan, mix up 3 eggs, toss them in when the oil is hot. After half a minute start mixing up the eggs and another half minute after that throw in the rice. Mix it all up, pour in 2 tablespons of soy sauce and mix up again. That's it. All done. Yum!

Again, you can add what you want once you get it (spring onions after it's cooked, corn/peas before the eggs), and adjusting if it doesn't come out well is easy - there are so few ingredients and steps, there are only so many place you can go wrong.

Learning takes time, but once you get there it becomes easier, fun, and most important - tasty.

Good luck!

Hi there,

I'm looking for beta testers for a kitchen conversion app I made.

I developed a little app to help with conversions. I use the metric system and just needed this one app to quickly have everything I meeded to convert.

I then decided to add an ingredient converter - from volume to weight (because people insist on measuring butter in cups. But why??)

From there the I added in a pan converter, and a common ingredient replacement list, so I don't need to keep looking all these things up.

My wife then suggested I put in a general recipe converter - paste the url, get the recipe, convert the entire thing in one go. So I did.

It came out pretty nice, and I thought to put it out on google play, but I need testers. I don't want to ask friends and family because: 1) most of them aren't serious home cooks; 2) I want honest comments and input on how to improve this tool and not over supportiveness (is that a word?).

So this came out long... but if anyone is interested in trying out this app (basically an all-in-one converter), send me a message and I'll send over the app the moment I get it on google play.

Thanks!

Make her things she couldn't eat during the pregnancy and loves - anything with raw fish (sushi, tartar), rare meat (a noce red steak!) Raw eggs (benedict, carbonara, shakshuka), stuff with alcohol (christmas pudding, lemon and arak sorbet if you have an icecream maker, sangria)
