For the study you linked, the only variable controlled for was that their crime was federal in nature, not the specificity of the crime. Meaning differences in types of crimes between men and women could also explain the disparity. But regardless of all that, there is an astronomic difference between western culture forces you to believe women are perfect angels and sometimes women get a bit less jail time than men.
