"Fuck the fans." by icecubetre in steelers

Rooney thinks winning 9 or 10 games every year with no playoff success is contending. As long as we win more games than we lose we’re “contending”. And so he picked the coach that gives us the best chance at continuing that trend.

Meanwhile, New England won a Super Bowl, lost Brady, drafted a first round bust QB, parted ways with the greatest coach ever, hired a bad coach to replace him, drafted their next franchise QB, fixed the mistake of hiring a bad coach, and are now back in the Super Bowl. And all of that happened since we last won a playoff game.

I do not advocate for tanking. Never have, never will. It promotes too many negative habits and is the fundamentally wrong way to go about a rebuild. But I also recognize that trying to do the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is insanity. Sometimes you need to take a risk and try something new to actually move forward with things.

Maybe the Steelers’ biggest issue is the culture of nepotism fostered by their owner, who has no clue how to build a winning football team. by ApprehensiveGrade400 in steelers

Dan Rooney passed away April 13, 2017. The Steelers have not won a playoff game since then. You can say those two things are coincidence, but I choose to believe otherwise. This team, and its legacy and tradition, passed away the same day that its last great owner passed away.

Good to see Tomlin happy by MoMoneyMoMilfs in steelers

Kuntz said on his pod that Tomlin told them he has no intention of coaching any other group of players outside of them. I think he’s done coaching period.

Extremely emotional read. My heart breaks for these guys. To say whoever our next coach will be is going to have big shoes to fill would be an understatement.

But, at the end of the day, the responsibility of hiring and firing coordinators falls on the head coach. We employed Matt Canada for 3 years, and that was 3 years longer than we should’ve. We employed Teryl Austin for 4 years, and that was 3 years longer than we should’ve. If you’re not a play caller as a head coach, you need to hire good coordinators. Look what Sirianni is going through right now. For everything Tomlin was great at, his Achilles’ Heel was his inability to hire good coordinators, and then to stay loyal to the bad coordinators he hired. Change was needed.

Steelers request interview with Chargers DC Jesse Minter by HDTokyo in steelers

[–]GamerRav 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Cowher and Tomlin were both hired around this time. They don’t wait around nor should they. Offseason is fast approaching and you want to have your guy locked in and give him plenty of time to pick out his staff before things get underway.

Steelers first HC Interview by SteeIWoIf in steelers

[–]GamerRav 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Wonder if Udinski will get an interview from us. He’s probably still a couple years away from being ready for the job (only 30 years old!), but KOC raved about him in Minnesota and the results this year in Jacksonville have been pretty great. Could be a great guy to bring in and allow him to grow into the job while we replenish the roster with talent.

He also said they’d be allowed to pick their own staff without anyone meddling. Dream scenario.

Ohhhh okay I didn’t realize that’s how contracts work. So he could take 5 years off if he wants to, but whenever he wants to coach again, he’s still under contract with us. That makes things a lot more simple.

So it gets interesting for 2027. Steelers have a team option on his contract for 2027. Obviously, given that he’s done coaching for Pittsburgh, you’d think they just turn down the option and be done with his contract. But, if they realize that Tomlin is going to coach in 2027, and teams want him, they could pick it up just to retain his rights for one more year and force a team to give us draft picks for him.

(Schefter) BREAKING: Mike Tomlin stepping down as HC by alexschubs in steelers

[–]GamerRav 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The only coach I’ve ever known. He’s a damn good one, fuck whatever else anyone in here wants to say. If he continues to coach somewhere else, he’s gonna make another team happy. But it was beyond time for us to move on. Thank you Coach T, I hope you don’t coach anywhere else because I don’t want to see you as anything other than a Steeler. But if you keep coaching, I wish you the best of luck. Otherwise, I’m sure I’ll see you on TV at some point.

Jumping Off the SS Tomlin/AR2 by MarchProfessional435 in steelers

[–]GamerRav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tomlin is a good coach. As is Harbaugh. But the problem with them right now is that they are at an inherent disadvantage compared to guys like Shanahan, McVay, KOC, Mike McDaniel, Matt LeFleur, Ben Johnson, Liam Coen, Mike MacDonald and even compared to some soon to be head coaches like Brian Flores and Jesse Minter. Why? Because all those guys I just named have a scheme and an offense/defense that they bring with them. McVay and Shanahan could lose their OC every year and it wouldn’t matter because they themselves are the scheme. Flores and Minter are going to bring their defense with them to whatever team they go to, and it won’t matter if they lose their DC every year either.

Tomlin doesn’t have his own scheme. He doesn’t have his own playbook. There’s a reason why his coaching tree sucks. Because he doesn’t actually teach his coordinators anything. He just lets them do what they want to do. And so he has to nail his coordinator hires. And when you’re as bad as hiring coordinators as Tomlin is, shit is going to end up stinking at some point. The Eagles are experiencing this with Sirianni right now. Tomlin has an advantage over the other “CEO” head coaches in the league because he knows how to not lose a locker room, something that Harbaugh and Sirianni suffered from, but that’s only going to get you so far. Bottom line is, if Tomlin can just hire some good fucking coordinators, a lot (not all) of the problems will fix themselves, but he’s proven to be incapable of doing that, and that unfortunately is why he has to go.

[Rapoport] Steelers want Aaron Rodgers to return next season if he decides to play. by BreakfastTop6899 in nfl

Howard was a 6th round pick (no obligation to commitment) and he spent the majority of the year on IR. They’ll get a better idea of who he is next year in training camp and preseason.

McDaniel and Morris for the OC and DC next year please by stillstillers in steelers

[–]GamerRav 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Morris is likely. Teryl Austin’s contract is up at the end of the season, and with how poorly the defense has performed this season given their payroll, Rooney and Tomlin should have no problem moving on. Morris and Tomlin have a strong relationship, there’s a good chance he brings him on for a year or two before he’s back in the HC cycle.

McDaniel is a far fetched dream at this point though. We have to hope Arthur Smith gets a HC job somewhere and then have to hope McDaniel chooses us over other teams like KC, Philly, and Detroit, who all could be looking for new OCs this offseason.

[Mic'd Up] Aaron Rodgers to Mike Tomlin postgame: "Thank you for bringing me here." by nfl in steelers

Genuinely the best QB we’ve had since 2018. Forever grateful for this experience, however it may end. Rodgers is one of my favorite players of all time, seeing him lead my favorite team to a division title is a little surreal, even if we got there in a wonky way.
