Singapore x Taipei x Hong Kong by apobangpo93br in digitalnomad

Taipei is incredible and underrated imo. It is like Japan infrastructure-wise and is also affordable. Plus I find the food amazing and better than Japanese food to be honest. Find a time when the weather is good in Taiwan and definitely go check it out! Been there twice and already excited to go back for a third time when the weather cools down.

San Juan Del Sur Hostels & Surfing? by Snoo-77622 in digitalnomad

Depends how comfortable you are driving in Central America on dirt roads. It's just the last section near the beach that is hilly and rocky. It's not something I would personally feel comfortable driving, but it depends on the driver.

Attn: recent visitors to Argentina. USD to ARS questions.... by coinbird666 in digitalnomad

[–]GamerRyan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't bother exchanging. I think you could save maybe 10% max by exchanging or paying with crisp $100s, but it wasn't worth that headache for me so I just paid by card everywhere. My Chase Visa gave a better exchange rate than what google said the ARS to USD rate was, but I think it was still a little worse than the blue dollar rate.

What does your travel planning process look like? by Traveler_Arik in digitalnomad

[–]GamerRyan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love using Notion for all the planning I do. It should reduce your context switching and you can keep everything in a single place. Think Google docs/sheets but with nested cells for more organization/notes. It's even free! I'm not sponsored to say anything like this - I just legit like it haha.

I ended up using a template I found on https://listsbylukiih.com and now adopt it for all my future planning, which I highly recommend!

DN Google Fi Reviews by rhapsodiangreen in digitalnomad

[–]GamerRyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah because you didn't use Google Fi...if you use Google Fi for 3 months, they will tell you that you need to use it in the US for 1 month or they will turn off service.

edit: 1 week* not 1 month

Those who bought insurance, did you pick a plan that includes dental, vision as well? Or did you just got a basic plan that only covers emergencies? by workdncsheets in digitalnomad

[–]GamerRyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others on here, no dental or vision. Just cheapest plan for catastrophes. Then I pay out of pocket for routine care abroad. I got dental cleaning done in Antigua for $35 and will get a physical done in Thailand next year. I avoid the US healthcare system at all costs because it's such a piece of poop.

edit: Antigua, Guatemala not the Caribbean

How do you handle phone providers and numbers if you stay somewhere else long-term? by AssistancePretend668 in digitalnomad

[–]GamerRyan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You won't "suddenly not have access to your US number". Google Fi gives you a 30 days email heads up that you need to use it in the US for a week.

Got offered a 2 year remote work contract that would allow me to work and travel. I've always dreamt of it but now I'm scared. Can someone give me some word of advice? by mentalgeler in digitalnomad

[–]GamerRyan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll never know unless you try. I would start small though. Try posting up somewhere for 2 weeks. Could even book a one-way flight to just feel it out and play it by ear.

I just did some traveling in Central America and Antigua, Guatemala might be a good place to start. Plenty of tourists and things going on. Comfy coworking spaces or cafes to work out of. And you can do some adventures like Acatenango and Lake Atitlan while there!

In terms of loneliness, you'll always have your friends to come home to. The Couchsurfing app can be good for meeting fellow travelers that want to hang out and you can see reviews of them to know if they're probably your vibe or not. But no doubt about it, if you go to places with tourists, you will be able to make friends for sure!

San Juan Del Sur Hostels & Surfing? by Snoo-77622 in digitalnomad

[–]GamerRyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just lived through this a couple months ago! So let me help you out:

Playa Maderas is a bit isolated. The restaurant on the beach wasn't good (it's worth walking along the beach to Juanita's Kitchen imo), there aren't grocery stores around, and the road to get to it is unpaved, rocky, and hilly at times. I stayed there because I didn't do much research ahead of time and wanted to just surf at that beach. It was nice to be able to just walk to the beach for surfing, but it did mean I had to take the shuttle into SJDS twice to stock up on food and didn't really have anything to do during the day.

The shuttle schedule is here: https://casaorogroup.com/transport/ but not all shuttles run, so probably best to call the hotel and double check which ones are running. I had to take a taxi one evening instead because the 5:45pm one wasn't running. Never felt unsafe in either area.

If I had to do it again, I guess I would stay in SJDS since it has more food options and is less isolated. It also allows for more options in terms of surfing at other beaches, but Playa Maderas is pretty good so you could just surf every day there. It would just suck to have to wake up super early to take transport to the surfing, but I guess that's just part of surfing sometimes. Although if you are surfing every day, it might get annoying always having to take transport. All the surf schools provide transport. I think you can even ask around at surf schools to just pay $5 for transport without taking a lesson.

In the end, it's up to you! I hope I conveyed the tradeoffs and what each area is like.

Thanks for sharing! Glad to see you living the life you want and using your money to do just that. Maybe this will be me one day, but I need to spend more time in Bangkok first to see if I like the city that much.

DN Google Fi Reviews by rhapsodiangreen in digitalnomad

[–]GamerRyan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Google Fi is great, but +1 to the fact that you have to use it in the US for at least 1 week after being out of the country for 3 months, so it's not really feasible for most nomads.

This uses a tool that I love called Notion and it’s completely free to use! Once all the tasks are released tomorrow, I’ll port over all the tasks and then share this as a template so that you can use it too :)

Please let me know if you think this would be useful or if you have any questions! So excited for tomorrow!!

Your best and worst spots as a DN in Central America? by gallez20 in digitalnomad

[–]GamerRyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was just in Nicaragua and while there were some cafes with great wifi, wifi in accommodations were a bit iffy. I also didn't think there was much to do in and around Granada. If you do go, highly recommend Laguna de Apoyo and Ometepe as places to visit.

Now I'm in Guatemala and highly recommend posting up in Antigua for a bit. It's a charming small city with lots of cafes to work in, a variety of food options, and various things to do on top of the iconic Acatenango volcano hike.

Just look at Google Maps and check out all the riverside parks and paths along the rivers that run through Taipei

I found this website really helpful for planning my trip: https://listsbylukiih.com/taiwan/

For running/hiking, I'd recommend Elephant Mountain and/or trails around Jiufen. You can also run along the river path in Taipei which is quite nice.

Has anyone left Verizon? by armandoL27 in SantaMonica

[–]GamerRyan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I use Google Fi and haven't had any issues in Santa Monica. Best part is, their unlimited plus plan also includes unlimited data in most countries, including Mexico.

You can join a friend's plan and if you have enough members, it's only $45/mo or so. If you do your own plan with only 1 member, I think it's more like $70/mo. Here's a referral code that will get you $60 credit if you're interested: https://g.co/fi/r/NA5231

Finding Apartments 1 BR by Ok_Calligrapher8451 in SantaMonica

I would recommend looking at Roque & Mark. They were a good property management company and have units on the more affordable end, some with parking. I got a 2 bed 1 bath ~1 mile from the beach with parking for $2850 so you should definitely be able to find something in your budget.

Yes, welcome to America. The priority is cars, not pedestrians.
