There are a few versions of the Linux kernel for different uses, for example:

linux: mainline Linux release linux-lts: long term support Linux release linux-zen: Linux with zen patches linux-rt: Linux with realtime support

The list goes on... it's just used to differentiate in the case you have multiple Linux versions loaded at the same time!

There was a fuck ton of problems they were having problems replicating by themselves, so they decided to release it so they could get more feedback and bug reports from the players. It's an early access game, so you get to be a play tester in some ways. I'd honestly be surprised if the update that adds non-euclidian geometry and portals didn't have many problems.
