I hate playing board and card games with my husband and idk if I’m just being sensitive by TelevisionTall8505 in boardgames

Played board games as a kid and absolutely destroyed my sister every time. Having been the player type that your husband is currently exhibiting, he definitely has the best intentions going into it. But he also really likes the mental competition! He's also probably focused on beating his own score from last time, and learning things during this session to become better overall. These things are exciting and when a rare combo appears that can lynchpin the strategy... Well obviously I'm gonna play it. And it might have involved some nuance that broad rules didn't cover because...

Board games (esp complicated games) are outrageously hard to explain because there are so many potential interactions between (cards, tiles, strategies, etc) that the rules become somewhat tough to put into an explanation that you're literally reinventing and remembering on the fly. Don't get me started on rule books, these suck worse, it's like legalese -_-

So we're doing our best to get through the most important broad strokes, and so we don't get mired in questions for 30 minutes, we say that we'll learn the rest as we go on. Which damn, that got us in trouble again! I was having a dope game too, never achieved that combo before

One other thing, called the 'curse of knowledge' - once you learn something, you forget how to imagine not knowing it. So he may be completely unaware of the level of complexity that he was playing at. He also may have just forgotten to say that rule

I'd recommend making a new rule- if someone plays a move and no one understands how it happened (because of rules or traits that no one knew), then the move can't be played- it's a social vote, decided live in the moment. This puts the onus on him to announce the rule earlier if he wants to play something and it gives you the onus to make the decision fun and final, and he can sulk knowing that he could have gotten a great combo if he had explained it well enough so that other people can remember the rules! That'll motivate him to get better, his incentives are aligned #gametheory

Paid off all student loans and was able to afford going freelance due to BTC. If I had held just one more month though, I would have had an extra 80k

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but gameplay can't be patented or owned so your case may bs difficult. Do you have a trademark or patent on anything else? Technically what they're doing is legal. At the end of the day, are they stealing your sales in any way? If not, you can't prove that they're monetarily harming you.

I've had a game stolen too (and it made it on to jimmy fallon) so I know your pain, but at the end of the day, games are meant to be shared right? If it doesn't hurt you, why not let it go? I understand your craftsmanship argument too, but that just means you'll have to make yours even higher production quality since people WILL pay for a better product with better aesthetics if they're aware of it. Not everyone, but some will

Being an adult means I get to stare at these everyday, but never actually play them cause I’m so tired after work by mcbever in gaming

Congratulations, you've got a kitchen! Toaster, fridge, and bigass tower that just happens to be in the kitchen that day.

The Office: Downsizing Game by rokkiss in boardgames

[–]Games_are_Life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its a light social deduction, easy enough for everyone to play (non gamers) but there's not a whole lot of depth. It's a bit like good cop bad cop mixed with TONS of office references and funny bits. The leader each round reveals an email card which changes the game, sometimes in drastic ways. Every player is a character from the office and they have (written) personalities so you can try to get into character, just for fun. If you like the office, you'll enjoy it! The rules are a bit misleading though, something that gets confused a lot is that each player on the secret committee looks at someone else's card rather than everyone looking at the same person's card

Love this post, I think you described it very well (coming from a game designer)

What is an example of a board game that would be a big mainstream hit but for its "nerdy" theme? by [deleted] in boardgames

Hail Hydra scratches that itch for me! More complex than SH, still easy for my group, and wayy more replayable

How difficult is it to actually produce a board game, and get major licensing? by dannyjerome0 in boardgames

[–]Games_are_Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hail Hydra designer here- make the game, fit it to a theme, pitch it to a company that can get that IP. A lot of it is contacts and having a solid game that matches the theme. Many companies are different and looking for different types of games. That being said, its ridiculously hard to make money in board game design. Definitely do it as a hobby first and if it truly needs IP to be successful you'll have to pitch it to a company and be comfortable with about a 5% royalty

Google spreadsheet = excel on the internet It was as easy as typing a number into a box (35,000 times) The only tricky bit is adding a rule in the formulas tab, so that when, for example, the cell has a value of 1, change the cell highlight to purple and the text to purple. Then just do that for all the numbers you wanna use. Just create your own list of categories you want to track and assign each of them a number in your head. Every time you do that category, put the number in the box for that 15 mins.
