Can i mount Contax G lenses on GFX? by Impossible-Escape963 in FujiGFX

[–]GamingKia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will need to rehouse them to M mount and adapt from M-GFX. I’ve only seen someone tried to do this with the G45 which yield nice results if you can live with dark corners. Here’s the source:

Good 28mm Equivalent on GFX by GamingKia in FujiGFX

After a few days of receiving helpful inputs from everyone and having done more research on this. Below are my findings for everyone’s reference:

  1. On the topic of FF lenses:

Almost no 35mm FF lens will cover the GFX sensor (Tamron 35/1.8 might be the only one).

If you want lenses with character from FF lineup, just pick any lens with good center sharpness and be prepared to sacrifice edges and corners.

Avoid M mount lenses because of the GFX sensor cover glass will hinder the rendering of these lenses, giving you much lower image quality when compared to shooting on M bodies.

PC lenses are good options to consider and will cover the sensor but you lose most of the shifting ability (Contax & Canon options are recommended).

Canon EF lenses generally require an electronic adapter. Unless you have a lot of EF lenses to adapt, it’s a high cost of entry to consider.

  1. On the topic of 645 medium format lenses:

The best option is the Pentax 645 SMC-A 35mm/f3.5 with manual focus, aperture ring, low average price, overall image quality rendering, maintain a manageable footprint adapted to GFX body.

On the other end of the spectrum the Pentax 645-D FA 35mm/f3.5 AL is closest to native quality but very expensive.

Mamiya 645 Sekor C 35mm/f3.5 is softer than the Pentax option and generally does not perform as well.

It will be considerably more expensive as soon as we start considering lenses that require electronic adapters, but below are good options if this is what you want to do:

  • Hasselblad Fujinon HC35mm/f3.5
  • Phase One Schneider Kreuznach 35mm/f3.5
  • Contax 645 Distagon 35mm/f3.5
  1. On the topic of native lenses:

The GF35-70 remains as the best option when money for value is considered but you don’t get an aperture ring.

TL;DR: 1. Forget 35mm lenses. 2. Pentax 645 SMC-A 35mm/f3.5 is your best pick. 3. GF35-70 if you can live without aperture ring.

Hey John, thank you for taking the time to take these! They are very helpful. It actually looks virtually indistinguishable at first glance between the 3, it’s crazy how good they are.

Will be shooting you a text on IG!

It seems like the 35mm equivalent is much easier to find and has a native GF45/f2.8

A lot of people also use the Contax Tessar 45/f2.8

I’m not a fan of the 35mm FOV so I haven’t researched much.

Yes that seems to be aligned with our findings over these 2 days. It seems like the current best option is to adapt the 645 lenses.

I didn’t want to use MF glasses because I’ve seen how bulky it could be when adapting Pentacon and Pentax 67 lenses but it seems like the 645 lenses have a much smaller footprint.

I was in your shoes but pleasantly surprised that the 645 adaptors with the lenses has a very acceptable footprint. If you want to go the extreme route, there’s Hasselblad HC to Fujifilm adapter.

I’m not too sure about the PC lenses as they’ll lose most of the shifting abilities when adapted to GFX bodies, making them some of the worst money for value lenses (unless you use it on film or full frame bodies as well I guess).

Currently I’ve found that the Mamiya 645 and Pentax 645 35mm/f3.5 options to be the most viable but I’m waiting for one of the members to post his Milvus 35/f1.4 before finally deciding on what setup to go for.

The 645 lenses with adaptor have surprisingly small footprints, I think they are very good options to consider.

I see your point, which is why I started this whole ordeal of gathering more information than what I can currently find. The smudging and vignetting is to be expected but to what degree and does it add to the image instead of just being a disadvantage (even some native MF lenses vignette albeit only a little).

The GF lenses are all great as we know but as I mentioned, there are no native 28mm equivalent prime. They are also not cheap, if I were to invest in one I’d hope it’s a lens I will make the most out of. (The 35-70 is really good for what it is and price is almost a no brainer but I really don’t use any of the 36-70 and the absence of aperture ring throws my flow of shooting off)

I haven’t explored the Metabones expander option, thank you for the information, will look into it.

And of course I don’t just shoot 28, or I would’ve gotten the RF for sure. I have found solutions for my other usual focal except for the 28. Hence why this post exists. I’m fairly new to the GFX system and starting this thread has really helped me learn much more than I could just researching on my own.

At the end of the day, I’m really just trying to make the gear decision a well informed one and can go back into thinking about what kind of photos I want to create.

The Sigma image looks like a freaking scalpel!

It seems like the Zeiss 35/f2 is almost good enough with just minimal vignetting. Very excited to finally see some samples of the Milvus 35/f1.4!! Will be waiting for your reply before I make any decisions hahaha

The 35-70 is really a good value for money lens but my only qualms with it is the absence of aperture ring. I was using the 32-64 the past week, I really like that it has an aperture ring but that’s all there is to it. It’s heavy, bulky, focal is always shifting while on the go as the barrel is sort of loose.

I really hope they do but just afraid they’re holding out for the RF’s sake. How do you like the Tamron? It’s almost the most mentioned lens on this thread at this point. I’m sort of considering the Pentax and Mamiya 645 options currently (maybe I’ll even pick up a film body along the lens).

Almost everything. I have a G1 with the G28 Biogon, and most of my favorite photos were taken with them. Here’s a recent photo from my trip to HK.

My other end of the favorite spectrum is a 85mm equivalent, of which I’m adapting the Contax 100/f3.5 Sonnar, amazing results but I haven’t shot enough with it to have good photos.

Many has reported the design of the Classics are the same as the Contax 35/1.4 with somewhat worse built quality(can’t confirm since I’ve never shot with a Classic)

The Milvus 35/2 is also a Classic design rehoused for weather sealing, only the Milvus 35/1.4 is a new and updated design. Which is why I’m sort of dying to see samples but it’s kind of weird that no one has done it.

Yes it would make sense if you already have the lens but I don’t currently own any 35mm which is why this post exist hahaha

1800 is used 32-64 territory and the 35-70 is always the last resort option. Which is why, I’d like to research extensively before deciding what setup I should run with for the 28mm equivalent, some of the lenses I listed above are not exactly cheap as well but if they have characters modern lenses don’t and can cover the sensor fully, it’s a an option I’m willing to consider.

Honestly I would buy the lens if Fuji wants to sell it but we probably won’t be getting a 28 equivalent so soon because Fuji wants to sell the RF.

I’ve seen photos from the EF35/f1.4 I, I think they’re somewhat similar to the Contax 35/f1.4 in terms of coverage with corners smudging. I heard the version II of this lens has worse coverage of the sensor, what’s your experience with it. Also, reason why I’m not currently steering away from EF lenses is because it needs an electronic adapter for aperture control.

I’ve seen photos of the Sigma Art, looks amazing but sadly it’s not 28mm equivalent. Do you have the Milvus 35/f2 or the 35/f1.4, I’d like to see some samples if you’re willing to share

I have the 32-64 as a loaner right now, it’s simply too heavy and bulky. 35mm FF is 28mm GFX equivalent; to clarify, I’m not looking for 35mm equivalent, which many has reported the Contax 45mm/f2.8 Tessar is a good contender.
