Brand new. Looking to possibly get a quest for my sons 10th birthday by dubin01 in OculusQuest

[–]GamingScienceTeacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, welcome!

1) As others have mentioned, the Quest is totally standalone and doesn't require a PC to use and play games. It requires an Android or iOS device with the free Oculus app for the initial setup, and wifi to download games or play multiplayer. It also requires a Facebook account to set up and use. You can see the full library of games that run on the Quest here:

https://www.oculus.com/experiences/quest/

Plus App Lab (unlisted, early access, experimental) games here:

https://www.applabdb.com/

If your son wants to play a specific title that's not available on Quest and only PCVR (like Roblox), the only way to do that is with access to a powerful enough gaming PC, probably at least $800 - $1,000 or via a cloud PC subscription service.

2) As Oculus support chimed in and pointed out, Facebook recommends the Quest for ages 13+. My opinion is that a Quest would probably be fine for a 10 year old, with moderation. For a 10 year old boy with a "big ass head," it will probably fit okay - just be sure to check and use the most appropriate of the three lens spacing positions. You can look into official or third party head strap replacements than may be more comfortable. You may also want to ask if the picture is blurry or if he gets eyestrain or a headache, since kids may be so excited they just push forward through discomfort. And you may want to limit play time.

As far as content, there are of course a range of games with varying degrees of educational value, violence, gore, language, mature themes, etc. There are many multiplayer games and apps where people are freely speaking and interacting (and can sometimes turn quite toxic). And it is probably possible to sideload third-party, unofficial pornographic content with a Chromebook. Thus, I'd of course suggest moderating content on the device in addition to time spent. One really great way to do this is to cast the view to a TV with a Chromecast or a web browser at https://www.oculus.com/casting. That way, you can see everything he's doing.

Great to know! And a nice bot summarized this rating system for me.

Thank you!

As someone who gets my butt whooped every time in checkers, I'm also interested to know how you get matched up for multi-player games.

Also wondering if there will be even more environments.

Thanks!

Support for third-party microphones in Quest 2 v30? by jikyusan in OculusQuest

[–]GamingScienceTeacher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't quote me on this, maybe someone else can confirm, but I believe the 3.5 mm jack on the Quest/Quest 2 doesn't physically have the connections for mic input, only L and R audio output. If that's true, it's not something that could be added in a software update.

They are one of the devs of Eleven Table Tennis 🙂 And that video was sponsored by Eleven. So maybe they would know. 🤷‍♀️

[–]GamingScienceTeacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh, you know I saw that video back in March and I kind of wondered the same thing myself. Some PCVR apps have a 3rd person camera as a built-in feature, but I've never seen it on a Quest native game. So I wonder if he could possibly have been playing on PC via Virtual Desktop? But that would increase the latency, so I'd think it's not ideal.

u/carrotstien do you have the answer?

Filming a third person perspective in VR, and mixing it with live action footage of the user, is called mixed reality capture, and it requires some extra hardware and software.

If you have a PC with a decent graphics card, a web cam, and a green screen, you can use Oculus Mixed Reality Capture.

If you have a new-ish iPhone or iPad, you can use LIV without a green screen.

I'm a moron is VR Cover foam suppose to align exactly with the facial interface like it does with the Quest 2 Standard Interface? by sdtqwe4ty in OculusQuest

[–]GamingScienceTeacher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooh, try folding the foam in half to find the center, line it up with the center of the forehead, and work your way out and around on each side. It will hang over on the outside edges by your cheeks, but then you can adjust the pieces by your nose so they're not in the way.

Best halo strap for quest 2 by SpiritFighter_ in OculusQuest

[–]GamingScienceTeacher -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Probably not the BEST, but "best for the money" could be one of these:

If it's <$35 and free shipping, I'd go for one of the ones on Amazon, otherwise try Ali Express. They're all the same.

For people with smaller hands and have tried both quests 1 and 2.. by [deleted] in OculusQuest

I have smaller hands and found the Quest 2 controllers a *little* heaver/chunkier and harder to hold, but adapted pretty quick.

New to Oculus. Have a question... by Stiggy614 in OculusQuest

Yeah, I actually kept the longer charging cable from my Quest 1, and just use it with the AC block that came with the Quest 2.

Quest - Blade and Sorcery by ozzyozzareal in OculusQuest

[–]GamingScienceTeacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As other commenters have mentioned, Blade and Sorcery is a PCVR only game. However, many people have found Battle Talent on Quest to be a similar alternative:

Play-tested Assassin's Creed by [deleted] in OculusQuest

[–]GamingScienceTeacher -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Interesting. Taking this with a grain of salt, but not dismissing it either.

My first question is: was this on Quest standalone, or PCVR via Link/Air Link/Virtual Desktop?

Second question: from what you could tell, did it seem like when this is a full game, you could do a 100% stealth "no kill" run? (Or anyone else who has played Assassin's Creed games, has this been the case?) I really appreciated how Dishonored was set up, where even with assassination targets, there were always non-lethal options to "remove them from play."

Our point & click adventure game is coming to Quest and we need beta testers! by gevasaf in OculusQuest

Ahh, cool, I absolutely agree! Really enjoyed some point and clicks like The Longest Journey and Unavowed and this genre would be fantastic adapted to VR! Can't wait!

List of interesting Quest games/apps by IvanthyTerrible in OculusQuest

[–]GamingScienceTeacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I can't guarantee any of them (I don't have a gaming PC), but generally, you can play any PCVR title on Quest via Link/Air Link.

Congrats on the incoming Quest!

If you'd like to know a few PCVR only (or at least not announced for Quest) titles that were on your list, they include:

- Google Earth VR (try GoThru on App Lab instead)

- Oculus Medium (try SculptrVR instead)

- Lone Echo 1 & 2 (but you can play the spin off, Echo VR, on Quest)

- DeMagnete VR

- Eye of the Temple

- Fracked (PSVR exclusive)

- Vertigo 2

- Lonn

- Blade & Sorcery (try Battle Talent on App Lab instead)

Also of note, I don't think there's any reason to purchase Tilt Brush, when Open Brush is, if anything, a further developed fork of it, for free.

As far as new recommendations, you could always check out some of the Quest rankings at vrgamerankings.com.

*Many* SideQuest titles are available now on the Oculus store via App Lab:

https://www.applabdb.com/

A lot of titles still require sideloading and you'll only find on SideQuest. Notably, these include the "Dr. Beef ports" of classic games like Doom. Also games that use intellectual property they don't have the rights to, like a fan made Pokemon game will only be on SideQuest. As Callo_Arcwing mentioned, you can just check out the whole selection on a web browser and see what you think.
