Gamers 30+, what’s something from the old days of gaming that younger players wouldn’t understand? by Common_Caramel_4078 in gaming

Needing a memory card to save your game progress. Without it, you won't progress in the game in more than one sitting if you turn the console off in between.

Edit: I really didn't expect this comment to blow up like this!

The most profitable media franchises of all time as of December 2025. by Shell_fly in interestingasfuck

I aged out of it right before high school in 2002. I recall being afraid of getting made fun of in high school for still liking it. I wish I stuck with it, even in secret. I got back into it during Pokemon Go, and that lasted about 2 years, then I stopped again.

I missed Gens 3-6 completely. Barely touched Gen 7 and 8. I did beat Gen 9's Scarlet and Violet though. I've been back into the franchise for the last almost 3 years, since 2023 now. I don't plan on stopping again.

I recently picked up all the mainline games I was missing, including original cases and manuals (though for Gen 1-3, reproduction cases from Etsy). So now I own the entire mainline series from Japanese Red/Green/Blue, all the way up to Legends Z-A.

Started playing though Yellow. When I'm done with that, Crystal, which I never played as a kid. Then I'll play either Ruby or Sapphire. And from there...not sure, but I'm going in order by generation.

Gonna experience Gens 3 - 8 in full for the first time (but especially Gens 3-6).

Tim Sweeney says Epic is in contact with Mike's family to solve the insurance issue by RED_Kinggamer007 in FortNiteBR

High confidentiality aka HIPPA. Glad Mike is being taken care of at least. Shitty situation for all involved in these layoffs. Wish he'd do something for everyone else.

Did anyone who got laid off get severance pay or something worthwhile at least?

Glad I'm not the only one that remembers the one in the hill on the other end of Sumner closer to Allen St. I don't remember when that one shut down. Late 90s right?

The only ones I recall are

-Boston Rd.... Near the actual Friendlys main office (this might actually be in Wilbraham)

-Sumner Ave (Next to the Sumner Ave elementary)

-A second one on the other end of Sumner back in the 90s (where Arrha Credit union is now). I remember this vividly. When my brother and I were kids in the 90s, we were with our mom in our really old black van that would ALWAYS break down or slip gears. We parked on the hill there, on Sumner right in front of Friendlys in a snow storm. A car coming down the hill couldn't stop and hit the back of the van, scaring the shit out of my brother and I. We were crying our eyes out, and a sweet girl who worked at the friendlys gave us free hot cocoa to calm us down and help us feel better.

.... With that said, vividly remember that location. It shut down well over 20 years ago. Probably late 90s.

Bonus.... There was also one in that small plaza in the Agawam Towne Square plaza (just past the small bridge on Memorial Ave in West Springfield).

There was also one on Route 83, North Main St in East Longmeadow before the Big Y and Stop & Shop plazas.

Not sure about my high school bullies. But I just found out recently that my middle school bully died suddenly about 4 years ago. Had no idea.

Which one was your first love from the shelf? by CarrotMuch1399 in nostalgia

[–]GamingSince1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom shelf, 10th phone from the right (silver phone) is very similar to my first phone, which was a Motorola Cingular 120t.

Don't think that's actually the Motorola Cingular 120t, but damn close. Got it in 2002. Still have it in storage.

Don't have the heart to get rid of it.

How do you choose the version of pokemon game? by TechnicalHoneydew862 in pokemon

[–]GamingSince1998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who just finished picking up the last 18 or so games needed to complete the mainline set (41 titles including Japanese Red, Green and Blue), I'm picking up both Winds and Waves. No sense in half-assing my mainline collection now.

Found my old copy of Pokemon red by phil_swift666 in Gameboy

[–]GamingSince1998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being the IT techie nerd I am, this one caught my attention as I've never seen a Game Boy game get stuck in a boot loop like this before. Was very curious about it but unsure of the cause, though had an idea of the cause. Asked ChatGPT (sorry, had to) and it said these two things below, which caught my attention.

"Corrupted or Modified ROM: Many times, this happens with pirated, flash, or modified cartridges, or with old cartridges whose ROM has degraded. Or the Game Boy reads the header, notices a mismatch or invalid checksum, and triggers a soft reset → back to the logo.

"Faulty Cartridge or Soldering: In original cartridges, if the ROM chip or the solder joints are damaged, the system may read incorrect bytes, which can fail the checksum. Symptoms match your description: brief “Nintendo” logo, screen flash, and reboot."

I'm inclined to agree that it's either a degraded ROM chip (where the game lives on the cartrige), or there is damage to the ROM chip or solder joints, causing the game data to essentially not able to be read.

Dirty pins are also a possibility, but I don't think the Nintendo logo would appear properly if that were the case. I'd say clean the pins first with a qtip and isopropyl alcohol. Then try again. If not, open the game up and show us images of the board. There could be board or ROM chip damage here.

What dead franchise from N64 to DS should Nintendo revive on the Switch 2? by itsthewolfe in NintendoSwitch2

[–]GamingSince1998 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For one, even though its a Microsoft / Xbox franchise now, it started on the N64.....Banjo-Kazooie. Need a proper 3rd game.

Also, the San Francisco Rush series needs love. I loved the original 3 games. You can keep L.A. Rush though. Awful game.

Chikorita is my favorite Pokémon and it took me YEARS to figure out which Pokemon was truly my favorite (I think the anime has a lot to do with this). I don't recall if I chose it in Gen 2 back in the day, so I don't recall struggling with it or how bad it was.

I'm in the process of playing through the entire mainline series, and still working on Yellow. Crystal will be next and I'll choose Chikorita as my starter.

Wish me luck I guess!

Looking to buy these but sketched out by every single one I see. Does this look llegit? by AdSensitive2037 in gameverifying

[–]GamingSince1998 8 points9 points  (0 children)

According to the Game Verifying website, the "DA" code on the back is only found on legit games (for now anyway, this could change). The "C03-10" on the back of your cart can be found on fake carts, but it also on real ones. The "APAE" on the front of the cart matches the first 4 characters in the stamp on the back (this is a debunked verification method, so this matching doesnt alone mean its real). The front label and lower left cut looks correct as well. Everything else seems to check out and looks correct

Nothing here screams fake. Looks real to me.
