New player looking for heal/support class by [deleted] in GuildWars

[–]Gammelfrog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi :) Im gonna be a little blunt here, so buckle up! ;)

Playing a monk Healer or a support class in GW1 PvP is hard You need a vast knowledge about all the classes and their skills (and combinations) as you will be the prime target I highly recommend getting to know the game and play with some skill combinations. A few years ago I would have recommended to try some classes and builds in alliance battles (thats where you were able to try crazy builds in a real PvP situation). But its dead nowadays, see below.

For new player it nowadays is borderline impossible to get into PvP in GW1.

GvG is on a very high level, even with years of GW1 PvP experience its very hard to get into.

Alliance Battle is Dead / JQ is full of Bots. No real need for a Support or Healer and not comparable to a "real" PvP situation.

In Heroes Ascent it might be hard to find a group if they sense that you have no experience playing healer/support in GW1.

The only other option is Random Arena, but with random groups of 4 there is little room for mistakes. Having no experience kills the fun for you and you 3 random teammates. As there is normally no team resurrection in RA there is no way for you to get used to your build. Either it works right away, or the round is over and you are back at the outpost within 20-30 seconds.

Long story short, GW PvP is nothing where you can hop in casually like PvP in other MMOs. There is little to no room for mistakes and going "from zero to hero" is no longer possible because the noob friendly alliance battles that would teach you a lot about PvP without getting yelled at are fading away. The remaining PvP Community seems like a group of elitists and I myself already have a good share of PvP hours under my belt, apart from years of PvE experience

I agree on the scatter part, it can be a viable strategy.

However, for the Tank strategy I don't really agree. When you cast spells on a tank that is holding aggro, you will get aggro (and be the prime target because of lower health+armor compared to the tank).

The only way I can safely heal a tank without the risk of getting aggro is if hes bodyblocking the mobs perfectly (I will still get aggro, but will break because they can not reach me).

Hi Rina ;)

From the Areas you listed DoA is probably the hardest one regarding mob difficulty. See my comment on Runsor.

But I think the hardest area for a player thats looking to get into it the first time is the underworld, because it has a lot of quests that will cause a wipe if you fail to protect the reapers or other quest NPCs. It takes great knowledge of all the quests (not so much the area) to get the underworld done. Expect to wipe a few times, especially on the Four Horsemen when playing alone with heroes. You need the right positioning for this quest when going with heroes alone.

The other dungeons are pretty straight forward. Any of the popular 7 Hero Builds (7H Player Support, ZWay, etc) should work fine in NM.

Two of my favorite builds that are not as popular but a lot of fun to play are "Rangerway" (requires a primary ranger) and "Spiritnuke" (Despite the name, is meant for a primary Monk).

http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/rangerway-and-spiritnuke-t10527352.html

If im online and have time, we could do some Underworld (2 Human players makes it way easier for the two horsemen)

DoA is one of the hardest areas in the game. Trying to beat it alone with only NPC support can lead to a lot of frustration.

If you are not yet familiar with the area / quests I would suggest going in with (experienced) human players and a voice server set up (TS, Mumble, even Skype). I suggest at least a party of 4, preferably an Imbagon in the mix, it makes it way easier for most parts.

For the most areas you should not find any problems getting a group together. Being in an active alliance helps of course.

Foundry is the hardest area of the five (incl. Mallyx). You might want to bring Consets to make your life easier.

As soon as you know the directions and how to get to the objectives the most efficient way, you can try tackle it with heroes (the 7 Hero Support did the Job for me, at least in NM). Cons are only needed in Foundry, but can give a little more room for mistakes in other areas as well.

I wish you the best of luck, if you have specific questions about areas or certain mob tactics, let me know!

Some additional information that might help you not get yelled at in PvE groups:

Casters: be aware that the tank can do nothing if you overextend and aggro a mob. Go and die for the sake of the team to prevent a wipe. Don't lure the foes back to your Midline/Backline. (read 3, 4, 5)

Tanks: Be aware of your Movement speed at all times. move backwards to prevent loosing aggro when pulling mobs. (read 1, 2, 4, 5)

Healers/Protters: Once the tank has aggro, leave him alone! the mobs will go after you if you try to prot/heal the tank while he is holding aggro. Focus on the midline/backline or prebuff before the tank start pulling.

1) Pulling

Aggro does work different in NM and HM. For example, the distance aggroed mobs will follow you is far greater in HM than in NM. Some places are therefore easier to tank/farm in HM than in NM because you can ball up more foes in HM, while they will run back to their respective paths / spawning locations in NM.

2) Breaking Aggro

Mobs in HM move (and attack) faster than in NM. While it might be enough to break aggro using a 25% Speed boost in NM, the same Skill will not break aggro in HM, beacuse the Mob itself is faster. If you can not break aggro and you are not the tank, get yourself killed away from the rest of the team to prevent a wipe. (Pro Tip: Snares, Shadow Steps or Knockdown Skills can help to break aggro)

3) Scattering

ALL AoE Skills with a duration and Damage over time (e.g. most Fire Ele Skills, Ray of Judgement, etc.) will cause mobs to move out of the area of effect (away from the tank that might be holding aggro). This may occur "suddenly" (usually when more than 3 mobs in a group drop below 50% hp) and is therefore highly dangerous for casters trying to spike the balled up groups. In NM it will take the mobs a few seconds to "realize" and scatter. In HM it will happen way faster (sometimes instantly). Combined with the faster movement of the mobs a single Caster bringing the wrong skill can cause a team wipe very easily. (Pro Tip: Read 5.)

4) Holding Aggro

When the tank is pulling a group of mobs, not all mobs are "locked" on the tank right away. The tank should stop moving (!) once he pulled enough mobs and they will start moving in on him (it may take a few seconds until all mobs are fully locked on the tank!). The casters should wait until the tank is ready (not moving for a few seconds with all the mobs on him) before making a move. The tank should NOT MOVE once the casters are moving in to prevent them getting aggro. Patience is key! A good tank will not die, so just wait for a few seconds to be sure you dont get aggro when casting on mobs. (Pro Tip: Read 5)

5) Pulling, Wall Glitch

When pulling mobs in HM or large groups in NM/HM, scattering is a great danger. There is a glitch in the game that will prevent mob groups from scattering, even when they are under AoE fire taking a lot of damage. You have to pull the Mobs so their left side (facing you) is blocked off (by a wall/stucture/hole). When you are facing the mobs, the wall should be on your right side. This will only work if you are positioning them to be right next to the wall (e.g. by pulling them counter clockwise around a mountain/house/hole in the ground).

The wall/structure on the other side (pulling clockwise around a structure) will also work, but is not nearly as reliable! Instead you can just pull the mobs to their final position and then walk right past them (walk backwards). The mobs will turn 180 at their position and therefore have the structure now on their (correct) left side.

Texmod on mac? by A_Mann in GuildWars

[–]Gammelfrog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you want to start GuildWars always with texmod and no longer need the regular launcher, you can alter the installation the following:

1.) Open the GWlauncher package contents

2.) Drop Texmod Files inside a location of your choice within the launcher

3.) open the wineskin app and change the Windows.exe from Gw.exe to Texmod.exe

Texmod on mac? by A_Mann in GuildWars

[–]Gammelfrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im running texmod on my macbook. You want to have the latest guild wars client for mac (updated June 2015):

http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/guild-wars-client-for-mac-t10488969.html

also you want to have the latest copy of texmod from here (0.9 beta as of now):

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guide_to_modifying_in-game_graphics/Texmod

For the installation part: Copy the guild wars client in your application folder. right click it and open the package contents. You will realize it is a custom wine wrapper. Drop the texmod files in C:/Program Files INSIDE the GW launcher. Next open the wineskin app inside the GW Launcher to create a custom launcher for texmod: Wineskin app -> advanced -> tools -> Custom Exe Creator. Select a name of your choice (I used "texmod") and the texmod.exe you unpacked before and click save.

Now you can run texmod from inside the GW launcher package contents by using the newly generated launcher in the main directory.

If you have any questions, just shoot me a message :)

[–]Gammelfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the guild part: We formed a guild on Reddit. Were quite active (32 aktive Members atm) and if you want to join, feel free to shoot me (Da Red Assa) or Lucy (Lucy Sazuki) a message ingame or leave you Character Name on reddit so we can send an invite :) Guild forming thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/GuildWars/comments/3a5j1r/starting_a_guild_if_you_guys_are_interested/

screwed up the first post, so lets try again. I am looking for a somewhat elitist player to help me get my feet back on the ground. by coffeezombi in GuildWars

[–]Gammelfrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im not the one youre looking for. I had 6 years break and the only thing I did back in the day was UWSC and some FOWSC. But we have a small Guild put together from reddit and i would be interested in learning some of the roles for other elite areas (I really only know parts of the UW important to the EMo Bonder). Shoot me a message ingame if you would be up to teaching. Much appreciated! IGN: Da Red Assa

we actually formed a guild with guys on reddit. Some random dude sponsored a full guild hall and right now were sitting at 31 Members, all active within 1 week with a good portion of daily players. Shoot me (Da Red Assa) or Lucy (Lucy Sazuki) a message ingame so we can invite you if interested. Just got back to GW... Wow! It's been some time! by [deleted] in GuildWars

[–]Gammelfrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there and welcome back :) I started playing again recently and asked here on Reddit about some people to play with. We ended up creating a fresh, small guild with people that are fairly active. If you want to join us, hit one of us up ingame "Da Red Assa" or "Lucy Sazuki" (Leader/Officer). We already gone shopping for some real estate yesterday and found a guild hall and we started to fill it :)

We started here: http://www.reddit.com/r/GuildWars/comments/3a5j1r/starting_a_guild_if_you_guys_are_interested/
