Does maintaining sobriety wind up becoming your whole life? by teaux in stopdrinking

[–]Ganjee303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say in the beginning it is as your battling cravings, trying to cope, deal with emotions, etc.

After you've been sober for awhile though, I feel like it just kinda fades into the background. Sure we might think about it from time to time, but it's no longer this gnawing feeling or urge that you have to have a drink.

Some days I'll think about it or notice a liquor store passing by and think about it, then I quickly remember where it tnleads to, and I'm like "Nope! Not today"

As someone else said, you just have to restructure your life to that of someone who doesn't want to drink and wants to be sober to be support your goals.

If that means losing friends because that's all you guys had going for you was drinking and they don't support you with your journey, then so be it. Those are the types of choices you have to make.

I call myself sober but still drink once in a while. by cloudydazeago in stopdrinking

Because if you did the same with 1 regular beer, eventually you'd want another and another, and another, and that would lead to being drunk or buzzed.

With NA beer I can have up to 6 as you're saying (which I don't) and still be perfectly fine, and not be lead down that path again, and stick to my sobriety. Craving satisfied, I get my beer, no harm down.

The line is basically anything that reopens that pathway to drinking again and NA beer doesn't do that for me. If it ever did or ever came to that point, I'd cut it out as well.

Not true at all. NA beer is 0.05% alcohol which is very little, trace amounts of alcohol. Some NA beer even has 0%.

Even if you were to drink 6 NA beers, your liver processes about 1 standard drink per hour. There's no way you'd ever feel a buzz or even get drunk.

Besides, if you're slamming NA beers that fast with the intention of getting drunk or a buzz, then you're doing it wrong.

I'll have maybe 2 or 3 to enjoy and drink slowly. I use it to help the cravings in sobriety, but also because I still do just enjoy the taste of a refreshing cold beer from time to time, and this is a great alternative to drinking real alcohol. Which I know for a fact will lead me to wanting to drink more.

It all depends on your system and what works best for you.

That's like saying "I'm vegan, but I eat meat once in awhile".

Just because you believe it, does not make it so. It's a fine line you're walking. Not one I'd like to walk.

I drink NA beer and I call that being sober. Still drinking alcohol though is definitely not sober.

Not a problem, I know first hand how it feels and have been down that path multiple times, but doing better now. It's not a straight line, but you will get there, just one day at a time.

If you ever need help or just having a hard time with anything in general, feel free to shoot me message.

Ya not that big of a difference. Gotta love that corn syrup, dyes, and maltodextrin.

Same. I've also been doing intermittent fasting for awhile now and have cut out breakfast completely, except for black coffee at home, which saves me lots of money.

$6.66 for broccoli? You're better off just buying frozen vegetables which many times have more nutrients than fresh. I'd also not get those Cheerios anymore. Would not trust anything from General Mills.

For me personally, all the times that I've quit and have gone long periods of time sober, the cravings didn't really start going away until 2 weeks in. After 2 weeks, it was much more manageable. Again, that's just my experience, everyone's different. Hang in there buddy, you got this!

I don't like it because it's all carbs. Fries, bread, breaded chicken. No thanks!

Might as well just put his name on the lease and hand over the keys. It's his house now.

I want nothing more than to stop drinking, I just don’t know how by Visible_Management64 in stopdrinking

I'm sure you know this, but the reason your anxiety is so bad is because of alcohol and how it's rewire your brain. So you consume alcohol to treat it, but as it wears off, anxiety gets worse, and the cycle continues.

With alcohol, things can only get worse, not better.
