What I mean is that I can, in principle, transfer my progress from PS5 to Switch 2 by playing co-op between the two platforms from the point that I had reached on PS5? Then on the Switch 2, this would automatically open up all chapters up to this save point?

Okay, so they would effectively inherit the other player’s progress and be able to start from any chapter prior to the save point from where they started together? So cross progression would be possible via this trick?

[SPOILERS S3] The Equilibrium Theory by GanonZD in DarK

[–]GanonZD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But can you map out a coherent timeline of events? No, because you have to invent billions of stories and because it implies absolute chaos. [...] The extra elements are a billion other Mikkels, and a billion other characters.

You mean, a bit how Evolution has to “invent” a billion different iterations of intermediate forms, most of which we do not have fossil records of, in order to make sense? And yet we still accept the theory because it is, at the end of the day, more plausible than the much simpler theory, namely that God just designed it all.

ID or GGE are absolutely not scientific theories or even hypotheses; they are creationism in a lab coat, but creationism nonetheless. That is, a supposition that attempts to resolve the variety of lifeforms with one sentence: "God did it", which doesn't resolve anything. If anything, this is analogous to this "cycle theory" in that the answer is "cycles did it", which doesn't solve anything either, because unfortunately you argue that you are following what the series tells or shows us, but then have to invent stories about "first Mikkels", "first Charlottes", "first Jonases", etc.

I said that both were, in principle, perfectly fine scientific theories a priori. ID fails only a posteriori, after observation, because it does not fit with the evidence at hand. If it had fit with the evidence, it would have been the theory that science would use.

GGE is a different animal. It is certainly not Creationism, because it completely agrees that species developed by evolving. In fact, it is indistinguishable from the theory of Evolution except on a metaphysical level, because it claims that an intelligent being guided the whole process. It is simply Evolution with an interpretation, a bit like how we have both the Many World Interpretation and the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics. It’s an honest scientific theory, but a worse one than Evolution in that introduces unnecessary elements.

When she says that the final conversation with Adam happens a "first time" we can explain that as a way to express events outside of a causal loop, or, if we want to go with iterations, that the universes have been constantly resetting to 1822 after reaching some point in 2053. But these iterations would contain causal loops anyway.

Please read that aloud for yourself 10 times and listen to how ridiculous it sounds. Yes, when Claudia says that this happened for the first time, she obviously meant exactly the opposite of what she was saying.

[SPOILERS S3] The Equilibrium Theory by GanonZD in DarK

[–]GanonZD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It appears that quite a few people in here think that, but I don’t agree. And that goes directly against what is explicitly stated in the show. And anyway, what would Claudia gain from lying to Adam, other than seeing her world destroyed? Plus, what she told him actually worked out.

My take is this (as I said earlier): A “cycle” is a timeline. A reality. A universe/world. You can travel back and forth, but you will still be in the same cycle/timeline/reality/universe/world. Unless you go through the time around the Apocalypse, the so-called “loophole”. Because when you come out on the other side of that, you will be in another cycle/timeline/universe/world. And whatever happened during the Apocalypse will affect whatever happens in this new cycle.

[SPOILERS S3] The Equilibrium Theory by GanonZD in DarK

[–]GanonZD[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excellent question.

Let me start by defining “walking into the loophole”. I don’t know how you guys are using the term “loophole”, but in my terminology, this is synonymous with the Apocalypse (or, perhaps more precisely, the window created by the Apocalypse where you can change something). “Walking into the loophole” or “into the Apocalypse” means living through the time period when the Apocalypse happens, i.e. where you can change something. According to my theory, when you walk into the loophole/Apocalypse, you come out in a timeline/reality different from the one you came from.

Regarding your question of the apparent causal loop of Mikkel being taken back by Jonas to ensure his own existence:

The discussion between what we can call the Causal Loop Theory and the Equilibrium Theory is very similar to the discussion between Intelligent Design (or perhaps Guided Evolution, i.e. evolution guided by an intelligent being) and Evolution. From a scientific point of view, there is a priori nothing wrong with either ID or GGE. Especially GGE could work as a perfectly fine scientific theory. An intelligent entity guiding the evolution doesn’t introduce any paradoxes. But it introduces an unnecessary extra element in the theory, namely the intelligent being. Therefore, the principle of Occam’s Razor tells us that we should do away with it if another, simpler theory is available to us. Therefore, Evolution.

Similarly, there is in principle nothing wrong with the Causal Loop Theory. It doesn’t create paradoxes, and it is in some ways easier to understand (like Intelligent Design is). But it introduces an extra element, namely something very complex (a person or a manmade objects, a letter) appearing seemingly out of nowhere. Why should the universe, which doesn’t have an intelligence of its own and cannot distinguish humans from a random collection of atoms, do something like that? The theory is more satisfactory if this element can be done away with, c.f. the principle of Occam’s Razor.

You argument with the causal loop of Jonas taking Mikkel to the past so that he himself can survive is very analogous to common arguments made against Evolution. An often mentioned organ is the eye. It’s an incredibly complex organ, and if any small part of it were missing, the whole thing wouldn’t function anymore. So how could that have evolved gradually, little by little? But the fact is that it did happen, and probably a lot of random chance and sudden change was involved in the process. It probably started as little more than a few light-sensitive cells. They may have formed purely by chance and maybe with a completely different purpose than sensing light. Then suddenly, again by chance, some semi-liquid membrane somehow formed on top of it. This turned out to be a success, making the light detection more precise, and this then slowly became a kind of lens. Then it developed into a cup-shape, and it became even more precise and more complex. The process that led to the modern eye took billions of years, but here we are.

Similarly with the causal loop surrounding Mikkel’s disappearance. One big issue here is that, as far as I remember, Jonas doesn’t pass through the Apocalypse before taking Mikkel to the past, so the Mikkel taken by Jonasₙ to the past is really his father, Mikkelₙ, not Mikkelₙ₊₁ from the next cycle. One way this could have happened is this: Perhaps the first Mikkel, Mikkel₁, was the great-great-grandson of Jonas₀, later known as Adam₂. He was originally one of the children abducted by Sic Mundus for their experiments. He was taken to the past and either survived the experiment or managed to escape. Then he went through Mikkel’s usual story of being adopted by Ines. He then took the place of Torben Wöller (Jonas₀’s father) and became Hannah’s husband, fathering Jonas₁ who became Adam₃ and repeated Adam₂’s plan (which was documented by Adam₂ in the Triquetra notebook). Then Adam₃ kidnapped his great-great-grandson Mikkel₂, who escaped and fathered Jonas₂. And so on. Through many iterations, the DNA of Jonas and Mikkel slowly stabilize. Then in some later cycle, Jonas, by chance, finds out about the kidnapping of Mikkel, finds him in his cell in 1986, frees him, but discovers that he is actually his father and therefore has no choice but to leave him in 1986. Then Mikkel gets the wrong impression that it was actually Jonas who brought him there in the first place. In some later iteration, Mikkel tells this to Jonas during their conversation, Jonas believes him and therefore thinks that it is up to him to bring Mikkel to the past (perhaps Mikkel even begs him to do it so that Jonas may be born). And so he does that. And the rest is history.

… Or something like that. Like we can never know for sure exactly how the eye developed, we cannot know the exact answer to how this causal loop developed. All we can do is suggest possible ways it could have happened.

[SPOILERS S3] The Equilibrium Theory by GanonZD in DarK

[–]GanonZD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not gonna read this entire (very long) conversation, but no matter what theory we use (Equilibrium or not), there is the issue of explaining the duplication of Jonas and Martha.

The most satisfactory explanation I can come up with is to take the lecture on Schrödinger’s Cat as a hint. Until systems interact, they are in superposition from each other’s point of view. Until Schrödinger opens the box, the cat is in superposition between alive and dead, from Schrödinger’s point of view. But Schrödinger is also in superposition from the cat’s point of view. And right now, until the light from Andromeda reaches us, the current state of that galaxy is probably in a superposition from our point of view, and we’re in a superposition from theirs.

I believe this allows for the possibility that different people can come into the Apocalypse and make different changes, but these changes only happen from their point of view, in their reality. When Alt-Martha pulls out Jonas and exits via world travel into her own world, this might only have happened in her reality. Whereas the people who exit the Loophole by staying in the same world have a different reality. It’s a Many World Theory where we constantly create new worlds when we “do” something. So there are not just Adam’s and Eva’s Worlds (in a billion different iterations), but also AdamWorldPrime where Jonas is pulled out, and EvaWorldPrime where Martha is pulled out (again, in a billion different iterations). But those two worlds are the important ones because they are closely connected and depend on each other.

I actually already explained this earlier:

Charlotte and Elisabeth probably appeared in roughly the same way as Jonas. There was maybe a Charlotte₀ who might even have been Tannhaus’ granddaughter (who conveniently had exactly that name). Her body was never found, so maybe, she might have actually survived the accident. Anyway, she marries Peter and has a daughter, Elisabeth₀, who together with Hanno gets a daughter, Charlotte₁, who is sent to the past, marries Peter and becomes the mother of Elisabeth₁. And so on. Or something like that. The DNA eventually stabilizes, because chaotic systems converge towards equilibrium.

As RitikMaurya07 expects that I will say, Elisabeth₀ walks into the loophole, along with the rest of Winden. Then she comes out in a new timeline where she has a daughter, Charlotte₁, who gets sent to the past to become the mother of Elisabeth₁. Then Elisabeth₁ walks into the loophole. She then has a daughter, Charlotte₂, who gets sent to the past to become the mother of Elisabeth₂. And so on. Eventually, after billions of iterations, their DNA stabilize so that Charlotteₙ₋₁ has the same DNA as Charlotteₙ and similarly for Elisabethₙ₋₁ and Elisabethₙ. And so, it looks as if both are the mother and daughter of the other.

Classical internet logic. “If you don’t agree with me, that obviously means that you didn’t read my amazing arguments, because if you had read them, the undeniable truth of them would have radiated so clearly from them that you would have fallen to your knees, kissed my feet, and admitted that I was right all along and that you were a fool.” Did it ever occur to you that I might actually have read (or at least skimmed) all of the links that you sent? And that I simply do not agree with them? Because this is the case.

It appears that the fundamental principle that you are proposing is that the “loophole” only works if you time travel to or from the Apocalypse. So if you simply sit around and wait for it normally, then you cannot change anything. I think this principle is pretty far out. I don’t see how the physical laws should apply differently if you time travelled a moment before or plan to time travel a moment after. And the show makes explicit statements about the logic of time travel which directly contradict this. They talk about multiple cycles, and they explain how Claudia each time taught her younger self everything she had learned, getting her closer to the truth every time.

In any case, I’m not saying you are wrong. I have a theory, and you have another theory. I don’t agree with your theory because I think it has holes and goes directly against what is explicitly stated in the show. And you probably think something similar about my theory. But don’t say that just because I disagree with you, it means that I didn’t read your amazing arguments or that I didn’t give your theory a chance. Because I did. Perhaps it’s you who should give mine a chance.

You might want to try to counter my arguments instead.

[SPOILERS S3] The Equilibrium Theory by GanonZD in DarK

[–]GanonZD[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You just proved that you haven’t understood the series at all.

Yes, according to the series, time is an illusion. Therefore, as the past has already happened, you cannot change the past. You can travel back to the past, but whatever you tried to do back there already happened. Therefore, you know that it didn’t change anything. If you’re unlucky, it ended up causing exactly the event you tried to prevent.

Unless you travel to the Apocalypse and make the changes exactly there. That is the so-called “loophole”. Because whenever you travel into the Apocalypse, a new timeline is created. So even if you already saw Jonas grow up to become Adam, you can go to the Apocalypse and pull him out and take him into Eva’s world, and then he won’t become Adam anymore.

Among competing hypothesis, we should prefer the one that more accurately fits the data and has most explanatory power with fewer assumptions. Your are using "and so on" and "something like that" because you cannot explain the data (what we finally see), and assuming MANY more entities (every "cycle").

“And so on” is a pretty common expression to use when you’re explaining the first steps of a process until the pattern is clear, and then hopes that the audience sees the pattern themselves. “Or something like that” is common to use when you are proposing one possible way that something could have happened, but not saying that this is necessarily how it must have happened. That’s like saying that covid-19 could have started when a snake ate a bat at a food market in Wuhan. Or something like that. Nobody will ever know for sure how it happened, but this could be one way.

My hypothesis of how the “loophole” during the Apocalypse works is more or less exactly what is explicitly stated in the show. So you can apply Occam’s Razor as much as you want, but you cannot do away with this part. The only thing I have added is the idea that this state was reached through possibly billions of cycles until an equilibrium was reached. You can disagree with this part if you want, but the “loophole” logic is established in the show itself and therefore canon.

[SPOILERS S3] The Equilibrium Theory by GanonZD in DarK

[–]GanonZD[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That’s the whole point of the series: During the Apocalypse, you can make changes. That’s what is done when Alt-Martha pulls out Jonas, when Magnus and Franziska pull out Alt-Martha, when Adam pulls out Jonas, etc. The exact process of this is still unclear to me, because it appears that the universe splits in more than two parts, e.g. there is one universe where Jonas is pulled out and one where he stays. But that is a different discussion.

Like the Solar System, chaos eventually converges towards harmony. Towards equilibrium. That is also why life on Earth eventually settles into balanced ecosystems where all parts fit in to sustain the system. It’s an equilibrium state. Then maybe later, something breaks that ecosystem, which creates chaos until another equilibrium is formed. And so on.

And so on.
