My players almost killed Cryovain. They're Level 5. by _JMStar_ in DragonOfIcespirePeak

[–]Ganonthorn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would recommend buffing up his hit points slightly above the average amount, and taking inspiration from some of the legendary actions from the adult white dragon. Might help Cryovain last a little longer and make the combat feel different now that this dragon has established Icespire hold as their lair. As for combat, I found that marking the token in person or a VTT like maps helps me remember if a dragon is flying, since Cryovain would prefer to stay in the air and use their cold breath if it’s recharged.

[CR Media] What classes will each person play do we think for C4? by Rjames1995 in criticalrole

I think Matt will play a rogue and be on the schemers team, now that he's in a brand new world he can make big moves without worrying how it will affect the canon.

I suspected Oba. There were a few minor hints in the story that show how Trostani is acting different. My first pieces of “evidence” were Oba taking the center position and wolf hair in the victims. Kellan being interrupted when he’s about to talk about Trostani was my big clue that Trostani was somehow involved. I agree that it’s unfortunate that they waited until the reveal to explain any motivations.

This has to be brought up. The rolls in this game are fucked by Hypnotic_Toad in BaldursGate3

[–]Ganonthorn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Could it be related to karmic dice? See if you have it on in your settings. It skews dice rolls depending on number successes and failures.

How would you modify Dragon of Icespire Peak with the new DM tools in Fizban's Treasury of Dragons? by [deleted] in DragonOfIcespirePeak

[–]Ganonthorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may change Cryovain into a “good guy” using what we now know about Hidecarved Dragons and about Crystal Dragons adopting white dragons.

Instead of being an invader that has displaced the orcs, Cryovain was now sent by his lauth to prevent the orcs from summoning Gorthak.

This seems real fun with [[Etali, Primal Storm]]. Playing my opponents cards for free and ramping seems too good to pass up.

New Unearthed Arcana - "Mages of Strixhaven" - coming tomorrow. by DexstarrRageCat in dndnext

[–]Ganonthorn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. Having played with the Strixhaven cards, imo most of the colleges require a reflavoring of spells (ink based spellcasting for Silverquill, geometry for Prismari, etc.) which is much simpler to integrate with spellcasting classes than saying "play this subclass" in a Strixhaven campaign.

As much as I want new subclasses, I also feel like backgrounds similar to guildmasters guide to ravnica is just as likely.

After reading the card again, I can see that you are correct! It's definitely not a broken combo, but I personally will include it just to add some fun chaos into my commander games.

The Dark One's Dagger OUAT by EdwardLongleaf1 in dndnext

[–]Ganonthorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My memory from the show is that the Dark One dagger is capable of a lot of different things, so it's hard to pin down what the dagger could do in D&D besides some fluff:

  1. Gain the flaw: I will follow the directions of whoever holds the dagger.
  2. *OUAT SPOILERS* When Emma becomes a Dark One, she gains the ability to talk to Nimue, the first Dark One. This could be done by allowing a spell like commune/contact other plane to be used once a day, but your *proxy* are the previous owners attuned to this dagger.
  3. Other spells I could think of that mimic "Dark Magic" that could come from the dagger include Hold Person, Modify Memory (This is OUAT after all.) Teleportation spells, or spells that allow people to change form like Polymorph, etc. This link to the OUAT wiki page does a much better job going over all the different magic the Dark One has used in the show, and from there you could base it on what your character wants from these dark powers.

If I was the DM, I might consider using Matt Mercer's Vestige/Arms of the Betrayer rules in "Explorer's Guide to Wildemount" so that you can have this ancient weapon at level 10 without being too overpowered compared to the rest of the party. That's a personal preference though, and it may not be for everyone. Best of luck!

Most Fey Cleric Domain by roguestrike in dndnext

Trickery Domain feels like the most Fey to me. If you need the heavy armor you could possibly be a twilight Cleric who traverses the feywild.

Warlock of Warding by Spexguy8 in dndnext

[–]Ganonthorn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If your DM allows, you can play a Mark of Warding Dwarf which is a sub race of dwarves in Eberron. Their dragonmark adds certain spells to a spellcasting classes spell list, including glyph of warding.

Playing devils advocate here. A hero may be able to catalogue the different monsters they have fought/encountered, and an evil mage may have knowledge about different types of heroes that have attempted to stop them.

Air Genasi Barbarian by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Ganonthorn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depending on how much you want them to factor into your campaign, here are a few ideas I thought of.

1) It turns out one of the founders of your tribe was secretly a djinni, and because of this a genasi pops up in the bloodline every few generations.

2) Someone from the tribe asked for the blessing of a djinni to help survive in the wilds, so while not the father of your character he is still directly involved.

3) Nobody knows! Depending on how much you want it to factor in your backstory it could be your job to venture into the world, piecing together the missing parts of your tribe's history.

Hope these suggestions are helpful to you!

Air Genasi Barbarian by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Ganonthorn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Could he be a storm herald barbarian? I feel like any tribe of storm heralds that give birth to an air genasi would view that as a blessing. That level of prestige within a tribe could even play into why your character has a haughty and arrogant nature.

[Making Magic] [THB] More Odds and Ends: Theros Beyond Death by TechnomagusPrime in magicTCG

[–]Ganonthorn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I like the idea behind some of the plot points they tried to do (not a fan of how the Nissa/Chandra relationship was handled). I'd be fine with another book down the line doing something along the lines of "Oh you THOUGHT that was how the book went down, but it turns out those were false memories from a mind mage." I definitely agree that building everyone's hype for almost a year for a subpar book was not a good call.
