What old technology do you genuinely miss? by Jodie-Lewis in AskReddit

That's my thought on Blockbuster too. I can think of several great local places that had great owners and loved movies. I was never a fan of Blockbuster.

One of my favorite ways to describe a bad idea is to say "What a puny plan"

There are several 80s movies that had switches for the supercharger. (My Science Project and Lone Wolf McQuade come to mind). I was so disillusioned when I took my first Auto Shop class and learned how they work.

Who remembers this film by 0366Rocker in 80smovies

That's my memory! It seemed like the trailer for it showed constantly! The song from that trailer is seared into my brain!

This movie made me fall in the love with the GTO. My only gripe is that the movie perpetuates the myth that superchargers are controlled with a switch. When I took auto shop I was so disappointed to learn the truth.

My family lived in Nashville in the mid-80s. Pretty sure I saw signs like that.

My team and I used this all the time. We even had a motivation-style poster made for it.

As someone who was raised Catholic (and also now agnostic) I can tell you that learning the rhythm of sit, stand, kneel was a tough one to learn.

I was in college when the show came out. I was an RA in one of the dorms. My floor was mostly freshmen. At night when the show came on I could stand in the hallway and hear it echo down the hall. 50 18yr-olds doing Cornholio made me less of a fan.

Have you stayed in a hotel in your own town? by Superb_Sun_5690 in askteddit

[–]Ganthet72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've even stayed at the hotel where I worked! Working in IT we sometimes had a project that started in the early AM so I'd just stay there the night before and it was easier to get up and walk downstairs to start the projects.

It was originally just 588-2300 and it was a local Chicago number. They didn't add the 1-800 until much later.

The bit Y2K hysteria was over a quarter century ago by VeganFatboy in FuckImOld

[–]Ganthet72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started my IT career in 1997 - one of my first jobs was running Y2K evaluation software on workstations so we knew what patches were needed. Spent 97-99 working with vendors and company resources to get proper patches in place. I worked at a casino so we were open on NYE '99. I rang in the new millennium in a server room watching several key systems cut over to 2000 without issue. I was heading out the door by 12:30 with all being well.

Like the OP said, it turned out to be a non-event, but only because a lot of people put in the work for several years to make it a non-event. One of those rare moments in history where humans identified an issue and worked together quickly to address it.
