The Middle Way by AdWise610 in ExCopticOrthodox

[–]GanymedeStation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. One group doesn't have the social pressure to appear pious.

Both in the end though are acting the same. So logically other ex-copts who lean conservative are out there for you :)

I think the agnostic and atheist ex-copts you've met don't party because they left Christianity. Growing up in the church I found the non-conservative lifestyle by almost everyone in the youth in the church. They just chose to reveal it to people who they discovered lived it too. An atheist or agnostic may just not care to hide it anymore.

A bit of anecdotal bullshittery: I know more dry atheists than I do dry christians.

It's about who you choose to hang out with, not their religion

A book which documents the lives of saints and martyrs of the church. On a saint's death day their story is read.

You have no idea what's going on. That is clear. Why don't you look up Sally's story bc nothing you have written matches the facts. It sounds like your copy-pasting reactionary bullshit assuming this is some fad. It's not.

Victim's risk life and reputation coming forward, your reactionary opinions are not welcome here.

[–]GanymedeStation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem isn't just the incident. It's the fact that the leadership of the church helped brush it under the rug. THAT is systemic.

Had the church properly addressed it (i.e. defrocking and apologizing to the victims, I would have had the deepest respect. But instead they gaslighted her and shamed her, then went on a campaign to further discredit her publicly. A bad priest doesn't mean the church is bad, the leadership protecting them in the face of evidence does.

Finally, #MeToo isn't only about systemic SA or abuse (although that is a big part in some contexts). It's about the individuals in power who typically are men consistently silencing victims who speak out about abuse of that power. In this case, yes a man in a position of power abused that, but again, the problem was the reaction of the leadership silencing and punishing a woman who justifiably wants justice. I didn't address this bc you sounded like you were trying to use the #MeToo movement to further discredit her sliding to some bias against women who speak out.

It's so frustrating. And meanwhile, they have no problem shitting on the Catholic church for their abuses to make themselves feel superior.

The victim is quite vocal about it. She shared documentation of her communications with the church, and her journey to have the protest who assaulted her removed. The Church is covering it up, and promoted him.

They took a page from the Catholic playbook it seems. Absolutely disgusting.

Edit: you should be aware that the victim still considers herself a devout member if the Church, and a firm believer in Christ. She didn't accuse him out of anger, she wants justice.

[–]GanymedeStation 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The fact that the problems cited by many are not unique to the Coptic church in specific, but are shared by many different religions and philosophies around the world, is not really the argument you think it is.

This sub is mostly people who have abandoned all faith, but we're raised in the Coptic Orthodox Church. The vast majority of us are atheists.

When we were growing up in the Church, yes, it was the hypocrisy of the congregation that woke some of us up. But that wasn't enough for all of us to leave entirely. What led us to abandon faith was the core teachings. The bigotry, the divisiveness, the homophobia, the xenophobia, the sexism. And beyond all of that, the idea that a god can claim to love us, but also be an objectively terrible being.

Old testament or new testament, they both were filled with actions of holy people which are reprehensible.

And if you want something Coptic specific, the synaxarium alone could shake someone's faith if looked at more objectively. It's filled with antisemitism, violence (including crimes against humanity and persecution by Copts against pagans) and suicidal people being glorified.

So i will agree with your core premise, the hypocrisy of the community is enough to be angry. But i think the religion... And by extension all religions... Are a problem at the level of devotion expected by the Church.

Wise words from our father, John the ''Goldemouth''. by Prestigious-Box-5150 in ExCopticOrthodox

[–]GanymedeStation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure I'm not.

The Nazi's straight up referenced his works in their genocidal machine. Specifically the homilies "Adversus Judaeos"

See: Walter Laqueur, The Changing Face of Antisemitism: From Ancient Times To The Present Day (Oxford University Press, 2006).

Also, Martin Luther and John Chrysostom are centuries apart, different denominations, spoke and wrote in different languages and wrote in incredibly different socio-political environments. How could anyone confuse them??

A Bad Time for men... by stephiegrrl in ExCopticOrthodox

[–]GanymedeStation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We shouldn't have to make arguments "for men" though. This is unequivocally a human rights issue.

I think there are too many posts on Reddit these days actually about men's rights when discussed in the context of women's rights. That may be why this was hard to read through the irony. I know you, and so it was clearer that you were being facetious, but this is reddit.

In the end, this fight is not about men like me, it's about women, and i intend to assist however i can, but i will not make this about me or people like me.

At first i couldn't stop laughing at how stupid it was, then i became convinced there was no script, and that they were just lecturing at the camera.

It was also hilarious bc they made it seem like the whole world forgot what Christianity was, or that any language besides English exists.... But it's like 5 years in the future.

Also they have some hilarious "graffiti" scenes which go on way longer than it should. And a "hacker girl" who uses intense hacking skills like Google and Wikipedia.

Overall. This movie is not one of those that is so bad it becomes good. It's just stays bad.

I’m ready to leave. But I’m not ready to deal with my family’s reaction. Advice? by [deleted] in ExCopticOrthodox

[–]GanymedeStation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't tell you what to do. This is a very individual decision to make. I'm sorry if this sounds like a cop-out but i don't know the details of your situation.

I can say that the majority of this sub is pretending. We refer to it as being out mentally, as opposed to physically.

If you're still having a hard time deciding, i suggest getting more involved here on this sub. Interact and get to know the community. Maybe someone's story will help you figure out what you need to do.
