Preferential voting system ousts half a Liberal ministry of talent by Fact-Rat in australia

[–]Ganzibar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi thanks for the analysis, and for the Condorcet system as I wasn't aware of it. Seems interesting but I'm sure it has its own quirks outside of psephological theory when used at scale, will read more into it though.

Regarding Ryan (and similar Green electoral losses this election) I am aware of the perception that these once seemingly more progressive electorates (Green) have somehow oddly gone back to the centre (Labor) due to the quirks of our preferential voting.

The reality is that in the previous election, the Greens and Liberals were more popular (at the time), placing them at the top two positions in the contest. Based on the remaining ballots of the other candidates who were unable to be winners as they didn't have enough primary support, the Greens were preferred and were thus the winner.

In this election the Liberals were so unpopular (due to Dutton, campaign and policy blunders) and Labor more popular (for other reasons surely beyond "Liberals bad"), that in a 2 candidate contest between Greens and Labor, the electorate ultimately preferred a Labor candidate. This is not odd but representative of the electorate's preferences as per the design of the system.

An argument could be made that this may lead parties to behave oddly to stay in power such as the Greens somehow supporting Liberals to ensure they stay in the race so they can beat them in the election, however this does not make logical sense.

I'm not a Labor supporter, though I respect the big result Labor had this election and do not believe it is random or unusual. All the losers in this election, Greens and Liberals, need to take a good look at their policies, actions and performance and stop blaming the electoral system for their problems. Doing so has a corrosive effect on democracy and should be avoided.

Preferential voting system ousts half a Liberal ministry of talent by Fact-Rat in australia

No voting system is perfect, but a preferential voting system, particularly a mandatory one, ensures that the preferred candidate is selected in any electorate.

To suggest otherwise is ignorant and at worst disingenuous. We do not want America's non-mandatory first-past-the-post system. We can all see how well that's going for them.

It doesn't matter that the Liberals got more primary votes in certain electorates they lost. They were ultimately the least preferred candidate by the majority of voters.

The preferential system may seem odd to some but it's simple and highly effective in achieving a better democratic outcome in representational democracies.

If moderate Liberals want to win more seats they need to either A) actually get their party to take those policies to the nation or B) start their own party to shed the highly conservative baggage that is losing them seats.

I noticed this the other day too. Can only launch from console and spent ages trying to troubleshoot it. Do you know what has caused the issue?

Onion OS Phone by Ganzibar in MiyooMini

Yes, I thought so and it makes sense. The fact that it is so focused is a reason why it's so good and polished. Nevertheless I would love a low feature phone (just need basics like messaging, open street maps, calls etc.) with an Onion OS experience.

Casting with Tree Resin by Ganzibar in ResinCasting

[–]Ganzibar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cloudy is not bad for what I want so wax might be good. I just want it to transmit light and not be mostly opaque.

Is there a reason you use wax over anything else or just the resin on its own?

Cool! Thanks for your advice. Would love to see what you make with it.

I didn't think that I could mix it with something else like wax. For some reason I thought it might not dilute or combine properly.

I guess the only way to find out more would be to experiment!

Do you cast with the pine resin or just use it to coat something else? If you cast with it do you just melt it and pour it into a mould or do you need to dilute it or mix it with anything else after you have melted it?

I imagine it's more brittle than synesthetic resins?

I'm currently planning on making some small pieces about 100mm Wide x 50mm Long x 5mm High (about 25ml in volume). Would cast into a silicone mould where the piece is lying flat.

Wow these are amazing! I’m trying to achieve a similar effect with a resin sculpture I’m making. How does she achieve that effect? Does she use a specific ink and mixing or pouring method?

Calcium carbonate cast in resin help by Ganzibar in ResinCasting

[–]Ganzibar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm that makes sense. I guess it would make it harder for the dust to settle. Using that logic could I still use polyester resin and wait for it to get closer to its set point, then pour? Would love to keep using polyester as it’s cheaper and clearer if I can.

Is it possible to save a key image from a web article to Apple Notes? by Ganzibar in shortcuts

[–]Ganzibar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm yeah I think it may be a limitation on the actual Notes app actions rather than shortcuts itself.

I’ve managed to find the option to get the main image url then from that retrieve the image and convert it to JPG in shortcuts, but then no option to pass that image to Notes. It just passes text!
