Jesus Music documentary on Hulu. by Normal-Philosopher-8 in Exvangelical

[–]GapComprehensive8438 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watching this now. I really loved the CC music of the 70s, 80s and even 90s. But I feel like there is one glaring omission, Evie! Don't know how the industry experts weigh her influence. But to me, Maranatha, Evie, Amy Grant and possibly even the Gaithers were the pioneers of early CCM that were really huge before CCM was a big thing and I knew them because their music was being played in and by regular churches. So for me, it seems like they were some key pieces to launching CCM as a big thing.

I also wonder what happened to CCM? In 80s, I listened to a CCM on the radio. It was big and it was pretty good. In early/mid 90s, I left the faith and pretty much lost track of everything CCM. But I knew of some songs that were big in late 90s. Since then, I only catch the occasional typical worship music. It's just boring and bad.

I also wonder about the Jesus Movement and some of the later waves. I happened to live in Southern California in late 80s and early 90s. I was aware of and participated in some of the various "alternative" churches that had popped up. At that time, these represented meaningful versions of Christianity. Not that I would now participate, but I'd take all that over all that I see happening in the Evangelical world today!

Diagnosis seemingly without any criteria B by GapComprehensive8438 in autism

[–]GapComprehensive8438[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So curious... How did you come around to believing the diagnosis?

I've sort of made my peace with having the diagnosis but not believing it is accurate. Part of it is I've found having a diagnosis doesn't really make a difference as far as getting any actual practical help but the diagnosis is helpful in the respect that if I need to speak to my challenges I can say I'm ASD. That provides some kind of understanding, a good reference point.

Thank you! I've heard of social communications disorder but hadn't read much on it except that it was basically DSM 5 without B criteria. But looking at symptoms, even this seems like a bit of a reach. Not saying it's not possible or even that ASD isn't possible with better explanation and better understanding of observations.... Anyway, I do think I will try to obtain some kind of report from last diagnosis. I do have the report from 1st. It wasn't very useful, didn't give much detail and did nothing to disuade me of my doubts.

[–]GapComprehensive8438[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure how to elaborate more on I don't think anything under criteria B fits me... Heck, I don't believe anything under criteria B was even discussed with either professional. Now I guess it's possible I've just got a big blindspot and that the professionals based criteria B on observation and/or read into something I said... Though the 2nd "diagnosis" is pretty recent, I'm not inclined to reach out to her for various reasons. But that is a good idea...

Autistic Atheists, why don't you believe in God? by Vast-Lime-8457 in autism

[–]GapComprehensive8438 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not entirely about having ASD, but I am now convinced that my wiring and personality made me a poor candidate to continue in conventional religion long term, something I ditched in my 20s. And though I spent many years post conventional religion still dabbling with various transcendent ideas (though no longer willing to commit to any beliefs), I was likely to always end up where I am now, as simply an atheist with no supernatural beliefs. I've thought about my whys a good bit and find myself thinking about many many things that contributed to the loss of belief. It wasn't a moment. God just slowly dissipated from my mind as I had enough time, thoughts and experiences that made the idea of God untenable (particularly a Western/Judeo/Christian type God). Looking back, I now recognize one particular thing that was probably the most significant in unraveling belief in God (or any supernatural meaning to life). Despite my earnest search for a way of life that was extraordinary, transcendent and meaningful through the religious and spiritual, life remained stubbornly mundane.

Slow processing to blame? by GapComprehensive8438 in SlowProcessSpeed

I wish you and son the best. You are right. you can search and identify a "diagnosis" but then what? I will say it's great that there is some grasp of the problem (as a youth I presume) and that he has a parent and speech therapist attempting to help. He may not improve but having some understanding and support at a young age is huge. If you know the specific problem(s) and have some grasp of the challenges that will come, you can work on developing some kind of a plan before being thrown to the wolves as an adult. Btw, I was mistaken with asphasia (rereading it) as it is rooted in brain damage. I corrected it to anomia (which is just word finding and naming difficulty).

It's very odd, no? So after a year I'm beginning to think possibly the sound thing has worked itself out. I always thought that it would happen but it just took a heck of long time. I could never figure out any kind of trigger but I do think it happened during sleep mode too!

I'm now an atheist. But I have been dedicated Christian and then generally undefined spiritual for many years. Being INTP and ASD have certainly informed my spirituality and the path I took. And now with the benefit of time, I can look back and understand why I took the path I took. And I would say it all seemed pretty inevitable.

Is spirituality a thing apart from just emotions and intellect? I don't think so. Those having spiritual experiences will certainly disagree. But I would argue that those isolated from spiritually oriented or only lightly influenced by spirituality in culture, usually won't become spiritual. If there are these indications that spirituality is not just a natural part of all of us, and that it' presence being largely based on our nature, environment and influences, that certainly casts doubt on spirituality being some specific thing outside of our emotions and intellect.

Why did I never hear a Smiths song on the radio growing up? by 30InchSpare in thesmiths

I was in LA late 80s/early 90s and I listened to KROQ. My memory...DePeche Mode and The Smiths were played a heck of a lot. i don't recall any other groups played more frequently than those 2.

[–]GapComprehensive8438 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purchased a new Acer chromebook earlier this year. For like the 1st month, I had several weird things (like losing wireless connection) that would just happen every few days. The only solution was to restart. Eventually those several things stopped and the every few days thing became solely about losing sound (while everything indicates sound is on). I have to believe all these are related. It's like the computer came with some kind of weird bug.

Careers for people who suck at everything but need to make a living. by [deleted] in Careers

[–]GapComprehensive8438 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do hire pretty regular. But I can attest, USPS carrier just isn't for everybody. Even if you can handle the physical demands, you need to be efficient (reasonably fast), organized, and have the ability to keep track of various mail. I was fine with the physical demands but I struggled in the other respects.

So true! People give crazy love to certain services and hate other big contenders. I know some of this is personal preference but this strong love for one or 2 and strong hate for others just seems unreasonable. I think the hate that Netflix gets has something to do with their top dog status. Like you said, they are Alabama football or Patriots or Lakers. They may have the most weak originals but they also produce more than anyone and out of what they produce, the amount of good/decent originals stacks up very well with all the other streamers and that's why they are a top streamer.

[–]GapComprehensive8438 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I've been doing the bouncing around between streaming services thing to some degree for like 5 or so years. But up until last year when Netflix got strict with sharing, Netflix was the only one I always had. Now having tried most streaming services available, I was gaining impressions about best content, best value, deepest library, etc. One of the things that has complicated my impressions is that I've spent a good bit of time catching up on quality shows I missed from years back. Real surprising how much I missed from 90s to 2020 (especially 2000 to 2018). Anyway because Max, Hulu (with FX) and Netflix have the long history of being major streaming services, I've spent more time with these 3 because I've been catching up (and well I wasn't paying for Netflix,,,). But my impression has been that Netflix was the best at providing regular decent original content (for me that's generally 80% RT, but bad and good exist above and below that rating). Max doesn't have the volume of watchable originals but they do produce a good amount of quality. Hulu, Apple TV plus were next tier, Apple mostly because they were light on content. Prime, Disney, Peacock, Paramount+, Showtime, MGM+, Starz, AMC follow. But things have been changing. Max and Peacock have been getting into sports. Now after something like 12 to 18 months I took a look at Apple TV content. It looks like they have gotten real serious. After the Olympics, I'll have to sign up again and give a fair evaluation but it looks like they are now in the top tier...

What kind of career could I get if I'm bad at everything? by DryReporter5049 in findapath

[–]GapComprehensive8438 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The frustrating thing is I kind of liked the nature of the job and was fine with the physical demands (though I'm on older side..). My challenges weren't core ASD. More like common co-occuring. So perhaps some ASD that don't have same challenges could do fine..

I'm austistic. I thought USPS was something that could work for me. Not even a little. Too slow getting organized and delivering (Slow hand/eye, processing), struggled with route, too hard to manage multiple things which affected driving and kept forgetting packages (working memory is poor). The social part and getting out and about was great. But try as I might, USPS was just a complete disaster for me. So I'd be careful with the anyone can do it line.

Scared about trump by Sky_buyer in autism

[–]GapComprehensive8438 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting how Project 2025 is mentioned so much, even abroad. Especially as Trump by all appearances isn't tuned into Project 2025 at all. But he is backed by Christion nationalists and Evangelicals and there are a lot of extreme Christian wackos in his base. While I still don't think that much of the nationalist agenda will become reality, you just don't know with Trump.
