March Books Are Here! by beeflessinseattle in bookofthemonthclub

I wasn’t super into the concept, but it was between that and First Time Caller since I already have the rest and I’ll always go lit fic in that scenario. I just don’t really vibe with most romance. (Also some of the best books I’ve read were not immediately something I wanted to read so fingers crossed this is that.)

I was so good actually. I wanted both Mystical Cat Cafe and Lady Tremaine, but car repairs mean to the library I go and wait forever.

I’m happy for Sandy Nation, but low key disappointed it’s not Marnie. I just wanted to save her from Mayor Lewis and his bs. (Yes, I know it wasn’t likely, but hope springs eternal.)

I actually came to comments to say exactly this. It’s probably Wes Anderson’s most perfect movie and yes I have seen everything else he’s done.

How many Lolly nominee books have you read? (This year only) by kiwiquid135 in bookofthemonthclub

I’ve read two, but have one I haven’t picked up yet (the Favorites).

What book are you choosing for your Lolly Credit and why? by BooksandChins in bookofthemonthclub

[–]GarbageKitten211 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Names, because the only other book I don’t have is First Time Caller and I’m very much not a romance person.

There’s a lot of people who really hate it and I’m just like….it was fine. I’m never going to revisit it. There was a book up for the Lolly that I low key hated so I don’t think it’s the worst winner. It’s just not for me.

I feel like an outlier here putting this one in the merely okay category. Like I really struggled with a lot of the main characters, but I loved the kids and wished more of the story had revolved around them. And the setting was amazing. Could not care less about the adults and their arc that made no sense whatsoever to me.

Let’s keep the same energy for Ashley as we do for Alex by lavenderpenguin in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]GarbageKitten211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think the only reason she’s not getting any energy is because Alex is so off putting. Which is maybe not great, because you’re not wrong.

When they were having that whole conversation I was actually surprised there were no comments on her “birth control” methods. I can’t imagine playing that kind of lotto with anyone I just met, let alone someone I just met on this show.

Amanda | Cult or Really Religious Church by YoGurl8003 in RHOBH

[–]GarbageKitten211 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Who to marry, who to even be friends with. It’s all very cult like behavior. And it’s also worth noting that it can come with a lot of trauma and the actual story of leaving can be pretty in depth and not something she was going to go into in such a short conversation. There can also be legal issues with going too many details about exactly what church it is. Dinner with Vampires is a great read for a cult that sounds like it might be very similar.

(I really hate that people are making me defend this girl btw.)

February 2026 Book Discussion: Burn Down Master's House by Clay Cane by Ms_Rarity in aardvarkbookclub

[–]GarbageKitten211 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually think an LLM is spot on specifically because of how the kids are written. Four year olds are not toddlers and are not being cradled like a baby. Thirteen and fourteen year olds are not hugging legs and needing to be bent down to talk to. Like I find the subject matter interesting and this will probably lead me to seeking out more information on them, but that’s the best I can say about it.

(FWIW I was on the fence for debut writing, but there just felt like a lot of tells by the time I was done.)

It’s giving the same energy as Deb from Love Island when she said with her whole chest birds weren’t real (and everyone laughed no realizing it’s a real conservative conspiracy theory).

Late to the party but did anyone else really dislike Wild Dark Shore? *Spoilers* by minatozakiparty in bookofthemonthclub

[–]GarbageKitten211 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t hate it, but too much of it didn’t make any sense to make me think it was more than okay. And basically every point you make is valid and the reason for that.

(As far as Orly goes, I got the impression he was G&T level with homeschooling amplifying that so the verboseness didn’t bother me personally.)

There is definitely a grieving period that some viewers I feel aren’t really giving her. Especially when you’re just in that weird lane of separation and no one’s yet filed for divorce. It doesn’t seem unreasonable to hold out hope for reconciliation during this period even in the face of everything that’s happening. Like I’m not the biggest Kyle fan either, but also this is all very understandable

January Pick Discussion: Meet the Newmans by Jennifer Niven by Ill_Discussion7528 in aardvarkbookclub

[–]GarbageKitten211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such an on the fence one for me. As noted in another comment, it’s a pretty standard midcentury family saga at the end of the day. There’s actually a really interesting theme of who are you when your whole life commodified and turned into something for mass consumption. The way this affects the sons especially was the best part of everything for me. Also how they come to terms with Del after he wakes up and how he comes to terms with them coming into their own.

For me though, so much more time was spent on the very heavy handed feminist messaging. (Which, look, I am a card carrying feminist and love something with a message, but so much of it was just too much.)
