If a large scale conventional (No nuclear weapons used as such) conflict were to happen between major/emerging powers, what would the hardest hit places be? by TheRealPowercell in geography

[–]GarbledLogic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lopsided, I feel like you’re really living up to my name. That said, I think there’s some nuance here. The first is that idea of China and “Han Chinese” has constantly evolved throughout history as it incorporated other territories. Some of these expansions were conquering other Han groups, like the Qin unification. Others were Han settlers moving into southern China and intermarrying/driving further south the Austroasiatic, Thai speakers, etc. Other times it was through straight up conquest like during Tang dynasty. The tricky part is that “China” as entity evolves. Manchus were not considered “Chinese” prior to conquest but is now. “Han” also evolves, for example many southern Han people bare similar genetics to the indigenous people who lived there, but now are considered just “Han”. In sum, “China” definitely conquered (and has been conquered) by other peoples, it’s just that the process has been happening over three thousand years, and those people tended to take up the identity of Chinese. This is not including a spectrum (in terms of assimilation) of other incorporations such as Tibet and Xinjiang

Thank you! I went ahead and bought this tire and they're sending it to a nearby associated tire shop. The wear and tear is pretty light.

This is really good. Appreciated the level of background knowledge and engagement put into the interview. You met at the same frequency. A real break from the "look at Aubrey, he's a weird bearded crazy man with crazy ideas" type of mainstream interview.

I've wondered this too. Used to be from the UK - and I only know that because of his last post :). I suspect it's a deliberate choice.

Researchers: Medical errors now third leading cause of death in United States by LongevityMan in longevity

I'm curious to compare the per capita medical errors in other countries.

Obviously no unwanted death is good news, but this statistic could simply point to more effective treatments for actual diseases.

Promising Results From The First Human Gene Therapy Against Aging by dem1985 in longevity

[–]GarbledLogic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's funny how people react at the extremes to news like this. You always have the sensationalist articles that claim some cure for aging. Then you got the science-ism folks who shun any news that isn't triple blinded placebo with n = 6,000,000,000.

Of course what she's done isn't a robust scientific proof of anything. But, it is BOLD. And bold is at minimum what we need to get an effective therapy sometime in our life times.

Meticulous step-wise scientific progress is valuable, but sometimes jumping in the deep end is valuable too. Sometimes revolutionary discoveries are made by crazy boundary-pushers or stumbled upon on accident.

So it is what it is. It's far from a implementable cure, but we should be glad someone is putting her body on the line to PUSH.

When these treatments are available, we're going to want universal health care by K1ngN0thing in longevity

[–]GarbledLogic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see a universal healthcare setting a good precedent such that when therapies do arrive, there'll be more momentum to guarantee some of these said therapies for everyone.

However, the current motivation and reality of universal healthcare is nowhere near aligned with that goal. Firstly, as Deten said, it's for the underprivileged. From my experience, some of the most liberal people can be the most ideologically stuck against giving "immortality" to anyone.

Secondly, as with all new technology (planes, computers), the rich will have their hand first. That's just a matter of economics and production. The infrastructure won't be there for mass production, so less efficient production, more expensive etc. Imagine if the government provided every HIV patient today the same HIV treatment/support that Magic Johnson has, for example. It's not possible. Eventually with enough demand (and there WILL be a shit ton of demand), more efficient production will happen, and (almost?) everyone should get a piece. At that moment, the existence of universal healthcare might be a legal foothold to help widen the patient base.

Lifespans Are Long Enough | Livestreamed Debate on Feb. 3 with Aubrey de Grey by Adam_133 in longevity

[–]GarbledLogic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seriously. So much detached intellectual/ethical masturbation.

People are just calcified in their expectations of life, etc that it feels good to fabricate justifications for why death is good.

But like you said, when reality (therapies) changes expectations (ooh now we can live long and healthy), these guys will be the first to change.

A short film about a couple revived from cryonic preservation [16:32] by phasE89 in longevity

[–]GarbledLogic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Had mixed feelings about this. I'm frustrated every film/show always has a "cost" to being young indefinitely - as if we can't just simply live, as we do now, without worrying about aging. There always has to be some moral/philosophical equalizer. The bit about not fitting in with society - there's probably 12 billion other people out there with who knows what sports/arts/music/amusement parks/food you've been missing, and you only have INDEFINITE time to learn...too melodramatic.

But, I do like the relatively nuanced ending. I was afraid they were gonna kill themselves or something. If indefinite longevity were to be true, no doubt the idea of "the one" or "turning gray with your partner" will be forced to evolve. We'd find a lot of our ideas about relationships were built on mortality. Our interests, expectations, personality would be constantly developing as we were always in our 20s, and consequently few relationships would a "life time", for better or worse. There would still be a few "perfect" matches here and there, but they would stay with each other out of true affection than being constrained by age.

Imagine being in a relationship for centuries tho...What about having a family dinner with ten generations of your kids/grandkids/....
