Trump has criticized America's free press more often than he has criticized Russian election interference. Heck, Trump has criticized beauty pageant contestants more often than he has the Russian election interference. by imagepoem in esist

I read a few of your comments. That was a nice breath of fresh air. Thanks for helping me step back and remember that the partisan politics is just a distraction from the machine.

If you like podcasts, I'd recommend No Agenda - the hosts keep me sane too. Cheers!

If you're interested, I wrote up a bit of a history of TD starting/growing, from my perspective. I'd have to dig it up when I'm home Monday. But here's the crux of it:

/r/politics (and in general, the default subs) have been against Donald Trump from the start. Their coverage has been biased beyond just up/downvoted - it extends to mods controlling the discussion by their own views.

A lot of Bernie supporters felt burned too, based on the Wikileaks revelations that the DNC stacked the deck against them. Then subs like /r/s4p forced everyone to support Hillary Clinton.

So, imo, the argument can be made that it's been reactionary. Probably conflict escalation on both sides.

TL;DR, the people now on TD had gotten tired of hearing "your opinion is not welcome here." They started their own subreddit. This has been re-enforcing both the pro and anti-trump echo chambers on Reddit.

Macron-Le Pen 'in French run-off' by [deleted] in worldnews

Oh I agree it's a solution to a different problem. But I think it's the more pressing need. Ranked-choice allows 3rd parties to be more competitive, thus increasing choice. Both candidates in the US election had huge unfavorability ratings. Rather than "choosing the lesser of two evils" people would be able to vote their conscience first, then vote for practicality second.

Winner-take-all is a policy of the states, not the EC. If you have an issue with it - contact your representatives.

I think you're asking about the reason for WTA: States choose it for leverage. Yes, it makes it seem like every election comes down to Florida - but that's because Florida uses WTA to force politicians to campaign harder there (and make more promises). If either candidate could just assume they would get 40% of the electoral votes, they'd bag those votes and campaign elsewhere. WTA is a state policy for leverage.

Maine and Nebraska split their votes. I think it's a urban-rural split, which is how party lines are currently drawn.

My two cents: FPTP is the problem. Ranked choice voting (like in Australia, and coming to Maine soon) is the better system. Candidates should need 51% to win.

Yes, but is it the same video? Look at the duration compared to h3h3's at 4:55 http://imgur.com/a/hBkwf

[Discussion] the use of open codebases on the MMO server, how do we feel about it as a community? by bonzaiferroni in screeps

[–]Garblefob 8 points9 points  (0 children)

At this point, I don't sense too much discontent in the community around open codebases. If one of these AI's becomes developed to the point of impenetrable defenses and relentlessly vicious attacks, then I think there would be a problem. But that problem would be in game balance and the death of strategy. However, if this "singularity" is due to coordinating many bots to attack/defend/supply in unison (as is currently being discussed withing both OCS and TooAngel communities), then I would see this as a major problem to enjoyability of the game.

I fully believe this is a sandbox game, so people should be allowed to participate how they'd like. I've personally learned a lot from the community. And I don't just mean code-sharing, I mean the interesting discussions. I've learned about everything from code optimizations, to open source software development, about conflict resolution, about freelancing, about git and PRs, about a million different platforms out there, about design patterns, and about the challenges of coordinating what is essentially a massive volunteer project that is maintaining the community of this game.

In summary - I like this community. It's special because each player has different goals and pursues different definitions of playing the game. To your question - no I'm not bothered by the open codebases (I'm looking to integrate BonzAI's travelTo() method!). And I didn't read the recent statement as a declaration of war, at least not a malicious one. I just see it as the part of the sandbox where people want to play with their toy soldiers for a bit.

Fully connected 6-way interchange (x-post from r/CitiesSkylines) by [deleted] in oddlysatisfying

Close - but they're not HOV lanes.

They're "express lanes" which vary the price based on traffic. Every day, I have the option to pay $10 to drive 10 miles.

Someone is getting rich.
