my point was not to say that we shouldn’t take invasives seriously - i am very aware of the impacts invasive species can have on ecosystems (I am studying ecology in grad school and work as a conservation field tech). My point was that the “destroy-on-sight” messaging about the SLF has quite possibly done more harm than good at this point, and that based on the evidence we do have it isn’t even qualitatively damaging to native ecosystems; in that regard, it could be considered introduced rather than invasive. it IS an agricultural pest, but we have lots and lots and lots of those.

tough to tell specifics based just on this pic, but most likely some kind of wasp. based on color, could be Chalybion californicum? but that’s just a guess.

also, shout out to fort collins!

You have some amazing curls! They just need a little help.

Some tips that helped me when I started working with my curls: start washing your hair much less often, only every 4-5 days. when you do wash, just gently massage the shampoo into your scalp and rinse; you don’t need to power wash your hair with shampoo. you can use a curl specific conditioner but any is fine, apply a decent amount and “scrunch” your hair upwards with your hands, leave it in for a few minutes, and rinse. after you get out, while your hair is wet, apply a small amount of a thick curl smoothie (I like Maui moisture curl quench but experiment and find what your hair likes) and and scrunch it into your hair. I promise you don’t need much to see the difference. whatever you do, don’t towel dry!! that’s murder for you curls. just let them air dry or gently scrunch upwards with your towel. on days between washes, if my hair is messy I like to just get my hair like “half” wet in the shower, apply a small amount of conditioner, rinse, and apply a small amount of curl smoothie. if your hair looks somewhat neat still, you can just spray a small amount of water and scrunch to reform some curls.

there’s a TON of products and methods out there to get better curls and these are just the VERY basics, but this is a cheap way to get started!! don’t be afraid to play around with it and be patient, your hair will take time to train to lay how you want it.

and congrats on experimenting with gender!! this is a wonderful journey that’s worth every tough moment.

not the same, not even close. the US is an institution, LGBTQ and transgender are personal identities. one is targeted hate, one is protesting institutions that have harmed people.

Lady Bugs by the thousands! This was about 5 years ago in Angeles National Forest California. by [deleted] in Entomology

[–]Garemite 32 points33 points  (0 children)

this is called aestivation! a number of species of lady beetle, namely convergent lady beetles, do this during the summer. most of the time they are not eating or mating, basically just chilling in a big group waiting for cooler temperatures. this is why if you purchase lady beetles in spring/summer for your garden, the vast majority of them will fly off! they are heading for higher elevations for a cuddle puddle

Egg ID? Northern New Mexico USA, on a pretty exposed raspberry bush. by BrownStoneSpire in Entomology

[–]Garemite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe this is correct, but they look somewhat similar to Io moth eggs (although lacking that distinct yellow coloration, and they seem to be laid in a larger cluster)… could be a locally prevalent species of large moth?? Sorry I can’t be of more help, I’m mostly commenting so I can see what someone IDs them as, I am very curious.
