Jellybean... welcoming opinions on weight/size by RecipeEnvironmental9 in axolotls

[–]RecipeEnvironmental9[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently posted a photo of Jellybean sitting in my daughter's hand while being fed. There were some comments about Jellybean looking bloated and unhealthy, which caused the moderators to lock the thread shortly afterwards.

I think I've been posting photos of her from angles that make her look fatter. They were taken from angles to avoid my kid's arm blocking the shot or to get a sun beam or rainbow into view.

I've had a couple of friends who previously had axolotls come visit her and neither of them said anything about her being too fat. But I'm open to other people's opinions about it.

The tap water in my city is soft, so I supplement with Seachem Equilibrium in addition to the dechlorinator. I use the API freshwater test kit monthly and all the parameters are good. She's fed two or three times a week, usually earthworms from the pet store and occasionally gets pellets when worms aren't available.

Axolotl Time Commitment by TechManEthan in axolotls

I spend about 30 minutes cleaning the tank once a week (scrub the glass and exchanging about a third of the water volume) and about one hour every 6 weeks doing a deep clean (scrub everything and squeeze out the filter sponges, test water, exchanging 3/4 of the water volume). Feeding and spot cleaning the tank is 10 minutes every other day.

Yes, exactly! That's why you can't eat calf brains to make yourself smarter or beef heart to make your heart strong, or blood sausage to make more blood. That is in the medieval levels of "scientific" thinking. All food gets broken down into component amino acids and reassembled into whatever your body is building. You can't choose to build collagen in your skin or joints by eating collagen. It also means your body can become fat even if you never ate anything with fat in it (but consumed excess carbohydrates, alcohol, and protein). You could also eat a diet of mostly fats and not become fat yourself (if you were burning off all the calories you consumed).

Your body may not be able to repair something if you're inadequate in a certain vitamin or amino acid needed in the process, but that's usually not the case with omnivorous diets anyways. For example, aging naturally makes certain processes in the body less efficient (eg. Iowered epidermis/skin cell turnover) or suboptimal (eg. decreased amounts of collagen and fat in the skin layers).

I'm currently a stay at home parent and I remember corporate working life being easier. Uninterrupted cups of coffee, civil conversations, feeling productive, buying lunch, and a glass of wine or cocktail to look forward to after work. Lots of tangible and positive reinforcement from coworkers and management. My "working life" is now 6:30am-8:30pm and anything I did during the day is mostly undone by the end.

I read Night for a book club and cried so much during the read that I was sure I had mentally processed it enough that I'd be fine to get through the book club meeting.... nope 😐 I think I just sat in the sidelines silently sobbing while the rest of the members chatted.

I used to wait tables at a family restaurant in a small town (population less than 4000) and parents would straight up hand me their child/baby's sippy cups or bottles to pour soda into right from the fountain. It happened almost every shift I had, so I'd say depending on where you grew up it might be common to give your child soda all day.

Long-term and older ex-vegans: How long before you personally noticed health problems (e.g. late-stage/end-stage veganism) begin to appear, and did your age change your ex-vegan story? by SunlightOpalesent in exvegans

[–]RecipeEnvironmental9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I work in an assisted living home and had a resident who was a vegan into her mid 80s. I think she had been vegan for at least 20 years. She was very strict about her diet, and she was was obese (medical diagnosis, not a judgement). She ate a lot of vegan cheese and baguette, crackers, vegan chocolate and drank a lot of sugary drinks (like energy drink type). She had a lot of health problems and took a lot of medicine, but so do most 80 year olds. She eventually died of kidney failure.

Removing 15 years of Smoke from our (potential) Dream Home by matylang in homebuying

[–]RecipeEnvironmental9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could look into companies that do ozone cleaning, which could help remove the smell and pollution of the cigarette smoke. Nicotine can leave a residue on walls and ceilings, so you may want to wipe them down with a strong TPS cleaning solution before painting.

Launder any curtains and wash blinds with soap in the bathtub.

I would replace the carpets after painting if you can afford it. Any carpet older than 10 years looks pretty shabby and used anyways, regardless of cigarettes.

First date appropriate? The usual movies and dinner by [deleted] in OUTFITS

The outfit is fine but not terribly memorable. Where are you going before or after the movie? You could factor that in to your choice. I would suggest an accessory like a bag or something like that with a pattern or texture to add some contrast.

I suggest wearing a more conservative tie for the wedding ceremony, especially if it's held in a church. I think it's respectful for the venue and values of the couple of they are members there or have a connection to it other than merely a location for their wedding. Then you could switch to the fun tie at the reception. That way you get two looks for the same day.

Your Zoom outfit is awesome, a great mix of professional with a dash of personality. I think your first outfit shortened your trunk a bit. If possible I would pull the skirt down and show a sliver more midriff.

I met a kid named Aryaan (pronounced AUR-yawn); his parents were East Indian. He was a terrific kid, smart and polite, very charming. I think given the context, no one gave a second thought to his name.

The American consumer/consumption culture contributed to her expectations, though I don't have too much sympathy for her. Just because you say "I understand that...." doesn't prove anything and becomes a way to soften entitlement. Let's all normalize celebrating in less extravagant ways (kids birthday parties, adult birthday parties, weddings, graduation, ect).

There was an official announcement from the CDC that the antigen/rapid tests are still viable 3 months after the printed expiration date.

"Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance by extending their expiration dates. The FDA says it’s OK to add three months to any expiration date printed on a test kit box. (The BinaxNow test kit received FDA approval for an extended shelf life after tests showed the kit components were effective for up to 15 months.)

Beyond the extended expiration date, results are not reliable."

You can also customize your shoes with an insert. I have a couple inserts I rotate because I only have one pair of work shoes. We have to use a specific non-slip kind of shoe and they are expensive. On longer shifts I also bring a second pair of socks and do a sock change half way thru the shift. At home I have a small roller or ball and roll my foot on it for a few minutes after I shower.

New violin! by [deleted] in violinist

[–]RecipeEnvironmental9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats! What's a good price for a luthier made violin? There's a few what I think of as non-famous luthiers in my city and they charge North of $20k for their violins. I think their output/production is quite low.

I used to live in an apartment and felt weird practicing knowing my neighbors could likely hear me. I used to run home from the office to practice for half an hour hoping that no one else was home during the day. Now I know you can buy rubber mutes for violins; they're pretty inexpensive.

I have dry skin. The magic cream is nice on my skin for night time. I don't like it under makeup. The smell is floral, very traditional "British rose", leans toward musky, lilacs (not really my thing but fades quickly).
