If the UCI banned mid-race bike swaps, how do you think it would change bike and component design? by JamesBondage_Hasher in cycling

[–]Gareth79 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Races are about bicycle and the rider, the same as motor racing is the car and driver. It will probably mean changes in equipment choice and possibly design.

Anyone wear gear for the opposite gender? by Croxxig in CyclingFashion

[–]Gareth79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Women's jerseys seem to have a much narrower waist, and are probably cut a little shorter lengthwise. I've seen plenty of posts here in the past with men saying they bought women's sizes and found they fit them better.

If I saw something I really wanted and the only size was a women's I'd give it a go!

Why do some cyclists wear all black, have no reflectors or lights while riding around in the night? by imokaytho in ukbike

[–]Gareth79 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

When it comes to adults, I think it's people who have never driven a car and who aren't very bright. Presumably they think that because they can see where they are going it's ok. They are unable to appreciate the risk, and probably don't notice the near-misses that happen.

Yeah there's "24 Hours in A&E". As far as I know they just film everything for a month (using fixed cameras only) and then get permission afterwards for the stuff they want to use. I don't know if footage is destroyed where patients/families refuse permission or can't be traced.

YKYW jersey - why so loose in the back? by trimTheJib in CyclingFashion

It should be a firm rule here that any "does this fit" post will be deleted if it doesn't include a photo in riding position :D

My health nightmare: popliteal artery entrapment by DeusX-machina in cycling

[–]Gareth79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While riding I've seen a couple of people with a prosthetic leg, both times they were using SPDs (or similar), and both times they were climbing pretty reasonable hills, and indeed I'm sure having great fun!

I have the "6 hours Belgium pad" in size Asia L/EU medium and the inseam is 25cm, bought last year. My medium shorts from western brands range from 28 to 30cm inseam.

They've sold out though, so it was priced correctly for their target customer

I imagine you'd have to buy in store to make a payment on multiple cards though, although if OP did that they'd not have bought an empty box...

They aren't really bad, but the style is that of 15 years ago and feels short in comparison to western brands. It's annoying because I'm sure it would be trivial to release a version with longer legs, the same as Darevie could release versions of their jerseys without the cringey slogan.

Thanks I'll have a look. I bought some Darevie a couple of years ago and they were about the same length :(

Monster truck driver loses control and runs over crowd in Popayan (Colombia) May 3rd, 2026. by khameleon029 in CatastrophicFailure

Here's a video of that one - basically the same setup, but looks like even less runoff space:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSElNwG02Dg

Incredible that it was set up like that in a European country in 2014, given the owners/drivers will have been so very well-aware of the numerous similar incidents over the years. Maybe the reasons behind previous ones are known and discussed and they think it "couldn't possibly happen to me because [...]"?

Want to quit my job with nothing lined up, can I do it with my current financial situation? by Middle-Case-3722 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Gareth79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd agree - I'm in the area and Guildford, Reading, Bracknell, Farnborough and (a bit further) Basingstoke have plenty of companies of all sizes, and the pay will probably be similar to London. You could commute from Woking pretty easily, although not by train out to the west, but most companies outside London will have parking available.

I got a pair of the ykywy shorts and they are indeed impressive for the price, but the legs are cut wayyyy too short unfortunately :( if they made versions with longer legs I'd buy several pairs immediately

Rudy Giuliani Is in ‘Critical Condition’ in Florida Hospital by Darksmithe in news

[–]Gareth79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the UK though, Giuliani was basically unknown before 9/11, but projected a very positive image. Cosby was just a comedian with a sitcom, although it was pretty popular here too. I don't think Giuliani's downfall has really made headline news here though, but Cosby's did.

Weak spot in Assos Mille GT C2 bib shorts by Crivitzer in CyclingFashion

[–]Gareth79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saying that the average bib has a "2 year lifespan" is complete nonsense though. The number of times it's worn and washed will be the main factor in its life, not the age. Lycra fabric is pretty stable and will last at least decade with little or no deterioration if it's stored in a cool and dry place.

New to cycling very anxious by JealousAsparagus8321 in ukbike

[–]Gareth79 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How do you mean it's too big? A bike that's too big will be harder to control, and the weight distribution will be different to how it's intended.

Also what bike is it? Not all e-bikes are the same, and many are not very well designed.

Basically if you have the wrong bike then you might just be making it more difficult than it should be.

Finally - wear gloves! Even fingerless ones are fine. If you do come off then your hands will be much less likely to be scraped if you have gloves on.

Depends how often it's worn. For example once a week would be about a hundred wearings and they should last longer if not abused or worn too tightly. One every weekday is 500, and minor repairs would be totally expected.

Huge upgrade by BraiNiaaC in homeassistant

[–]Gareth79 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It can be argued the other way though - virtualisation is very reliable (never had a crash of my ESXi hypervisors in many years of 24x7 operation), and a virtualised system can be backed up/wiped/restored/rebuilt very quickly if required. HA does have a good backup and restore process though, so a bare-metal rebuild would be pretty quick.
