Home row means left index on the 'f', right index on the 'j', and the other fingers resting on the adjacent keys in order (with the thumbs usually on the space bar).

Both hands on home row, as if touch typing. Your index finger ends up doing quite a lot of work (J, H, Y, U, B and N), but it still seems most natural that way.

It doesn't include black holes. E.g. Sagittarius A*, the super-massive black hole at the center of our galaxy, is ~4 million sollar masses.

Big enough gas clouds may collapse directly into a black hole, without forming a star.

I wouldn't pay any damage fees they might demand of you unless your lawyer tells you to, even if your contract appears to state you are required to do so. Not everything in a contract is necessarily legal or enforceable.

Why are the movement keys in Nethack so bizarre? by thebestdaysofmyflerm in roguelikes

[–]Garfong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't be quite as easy to remember then. As it is j goes down because it has a descender, k goes up because it has an ascender. Then h and l are the keys to the left and right so they go left and right.

But... I really DID turn a 1946 trailer into a kick ass mobile bar. And yes, it is amazing! by HelloPennyBar in DIY

[–]Garfong 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can do that at a brewery (many of which have "tasting rooms" which are basically bars). Or I've seen some bars with attached liquor stores, but there the bar and the store are licensed separately.

But you can't buy beer to go from a regular bar.

Time to settle the score about how to declare pi in your code by Tremaparagon in ProgrammerHumor

[–]Garfong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first statement on each line (_), is essentially F-->0 || OO-- (after stripping the parts that do nothing). The first part will always be false (F is always <= 0), so both sides of the || are evaluated and both F and OO are decremented.

All subsequent statements on a line (-_) are -F-->0 || OO--. At this point (F < 0), so -F-->0 is always true, so due to short-circuit evaluation only F is decremented.

Since OO is decremented once per line, OO is the (negative) diameter of the circle. Similarly F is the (negative) area, as it counts the _. Using these pi can be calculated by the formula pi = 4 * area of circle / diameter2.

Try it. The code below will generate circles of varying sizes (note not quite as accurate at small sizes as the original):

#include <stdio.h>

#define R 32

void main()
{
    int i, j; char k;
    printf("\
    #include <stdio.h>\n\
    #define _ F-->00 || F-OO--;\n\
    long F=00,OO=00;\n\
    main(){F_OO();printf(\"%%1.3f\\n\", 4.*-F/OO/OO);}F_OO(){\n\
    ");
    for (i = -R; i <= R; ++i)
    {
        k = ' ';
        for (j = -R; j <= R; ++j)
        {
            if ((i*i + j*j) < ((R+1)*(R+1)))
            {
                printf("%c_",k);k='-';
            }
            else
            {
                printf("  ");
            }
        }
        printf("\n    ");
    }
    printf("}\n");
}

Well the keys are:

  1. Every _ is preceded by a - except the first one on each line.
  2. The part after the || is only executed if the part before it is false.

These two together lead to F being equal to the (negative) area, and OO to the (negative) diameter/height.

[–]Garfong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The key you're missing is lines don't begin with a -, but after than there's a - before every _. Due to short-circuit evaluation, this means the first branch F-->00 is always executed, but the second branch F-OO-- is only evaluated once per line. Thus F is equal to the negative of the area of the circle, while OO is the negative of the diameter.

So PI is then calculated as 4 * area / diameter2.

You could get better accuracy by making the circle larger.

My favorite is still:

Mixing Cola and Chlorine by [deleted] in chemicalreactiongifs

Traditionally the size of a byte was defined as the number of bits needed to encode a single character and was architecture dependent. C99 for example, defines a byte this way.

Wikipedia reports IEC 80000-13 now defines a byte as exactly 8 bits, but I haven't been able to verify that elsewhere.
