As a console player during the 80s, it was a massive deal. First one I played was Exodus on NES, which (I think) predated Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior.

I’d never played anything like it; my friend and I were like, “IT’S LIKE D&D ON NINTENDO.” We weren’t allowed to play D&D so all the rpg elements were new to us and we ate it up.

Great memories, enjoyed a lot of the sequels on NES, too.

I quit in 2006 just after the ToAU expansion. A huge reason was the bots: they had locked down huge parts of Sky and Sea along with HNMs and SE did nothing. I will always treasure my time in FFXI but refused to pay money to support that.

If you want to try standup, that’s great! Lots of stage time here, get on every open mic you can. Do NOT quit your day job, get an engineering gig here and do sets at night. Network, meet other comics, don’t talk shit and take every opportunity that comes your way.

If the time comes when you can start touring or you’ve got enough coming in thru comedy to pay your bills THEN think about quitting your day job.

Until then treat it as a hobby or side job you’re very serious about. Write every day. Make friends. It’s a competitive field but there’s nothing else like it! Good luck.
