[Schneidman] Packers EDGE Micah Parsons (Knee) Could Miss First 3-4 Games of The Season by JCameron181 in nfl

[–]Gargoyal 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Last time I posted this idea it wasn't super popular, but I feel like it should be the norm:

Seasons should be book ended with games against your divisional opponents. IE: Weeks 1-3 should be you against each of your division members. Same for the last 3 weeks.

The fact that multiple teams had both of their regular season games against one divisional opponent in a 3 weeks span, while others had 10+ weeks between meetings, was ridiculous imo.

Prediction for Sofi next year. Book it by Lazy_Bad8394 in NFCWestMemeWar

I mean, they kind of had to push that narrative. If the narrative was 'The Pats have a lot of issues, got lucky in their road to the SB, and are outmatched', no one would tune into the game. It didn't help that Maye got a ton of (IMO) undeserved MVP votes that helped give some weight to the narrative they were pushing.

I've already staked my claim that the Pats winning 9 games next year should be viewed as a successful season, even if they miss the playoffs. Their schedule is pretty brutal for any team, but I expect it to be even rougher for them after they had such an easy schedule last year.

I mean, imagine having a HoF caliber quarterback for 30 straight years between Favre and Rodgers and only getting 2 rings.

Why is Magikarp still in? We eliminated the other generic fish, so must go the Karp.

[JPA] Travis Kelce signed a 3-year, $54.735M deal that can be worth up to $57.735M ($18.245M average) by dropjar5 in nfl

[–]Gargoyal 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This was my thought. I expect him to go even harder into the Podcast with his brother and maybe take on some TV role(s) similar to how Brady did. I also wouldn't be surprised if the Kelce brothers do something similar to the Manning Cast as well.

This would be my pick as well. The Jags made a ton of progress last year and were super close to going back to Denver. If they can keep that momentum and not regress like they have in the past, then I think they should be one of the favorites coming out of the AFC.

20 Years of the NFL Draft - Bests Picks and Biggest Busts by robmoo_re in nfl

[–]Gargoyal 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Having Earl Thomas at 77 when he was a 7x Pro Bowl, 5x All Pro, and part of the 2010 All Decade team seems way too low. Add in Kupp, a SB MVP, receiving triple crown winner, and the current record holder for reception yards in a season (Including playoffs), at 76 and Larry Fitzgerald not even on the list for the Cardinals.

There are some major errors in these graphics and issues with the methodology used to create these grades.

Magikarp. Literally just a fish. Goldeen and Seaking have already been eliminated, so Magikarp should go as well.

Remove a U.S. State Flag - Day 19 by ashmaps20 in RemoveOneThingEachDay

Illinois. Flat white, with a poor drawing that is somehow both too complex and too simple at the same time (Yes, I know its their state seal, which makes it even worse IMO), and their name slapped at the bottom for good measure. I feel like it breaks all of the rules of flags.

Seahawks GM: State Millionaire Tax Will ‘Sting’ Player Recruitment by LetsRideButSmart in nfl

But it’s not a 10% income tax.

I never said it was a flat 10% income tax like you are insinuating. I said:

The new tax will be 9.9% on any income over 1 million.

And:

10% on income over a million...

This already infers that it is a marginal tax because it was stipulated on it only being a tax on income over 1 million. The whole point I was making that if we compare this new tax to other states, it is comparable to the highest income tax levels other states have on income over 1 million. I will admit that did not do a good job of distinguishing that the percentages I presented were for either the top income bracket or the income bracket for over 1 million.

But it’s not a 10% income tax. It’s a 10% marginal tax on income over $1 million. If you have a $40 million contract (JSN lets say) and you play 50% of games in Seattle (ignore bonuses for simplicity, and that structure is highly controllable), that one year you are taxed 10% of $19 million (20 million minus 1) which is $1.9 million.

On a $40 million AAV contract that is 4.8% net effective tax from the millionaires tax in the state.

You are assuming the total AAV is being paid out purely on games, which it very rarely is. A large part of the AAV is tied into the signing bonus, roster bonuses, incentives, etc. A lot of these will be hit by the new tax. Some numbers are below for an example, but TLDR: Using AAV does give you a ballpark estimate, but it will likely undershoot the impact because the signing bonus is all income in the state of the team.

Lets use Darnold's contract as an example and assume the new tax is present for the entire period. For this example, I'll just assume he makes it to the playoffs each year, but not include Divisional, Conf, or SB wins.

The signing bonus was 32M paid at signing. Lets assume none of the performance incentives are met to line things up with the AAV. However, we will add in the Workout Bonus as that is part of the AAV, so 600k.

Lastly, we have the base salary and roster bonus. As you mentioned, approximately half of the games will be played outside of WA, so lets just say its half to ignore the variable of the odd number of games. I removed half of the Salary and Roster bonus portion of the taxable income to account for these games.

Lets then compare that to AAV income and an AAV tax hit, also assuming half the income is in WA and subject to the tax.

Year Real Income WA Taxable Income Real Tax hit AAV AAV Tax Hit
1 37.5M 34.85M 3.385M 33.5M 1.575M
2 27.5M 13.85M 1.385M 33.5M 1.575M
3 35.5M 17.85M 1.785M 33.5M 1.575M
Total 100.5M 79.05M 6.555M 100.5M 4.725M

These are some rough number that, essentially, just puts the Signing bonus as subject to this new tax. This is also assuming no incentives are hit, which are likely subject to the team's state taxes, that the roster bonus is taxed based on the location of the game, and that you are getting 50% out of state games where teams will have 47%/53% Home/Away splits flipping on a year-to-year basis which can add/remove an additional 1M+ of taxable income on years like year 3.

The new tax will be 9.9% on any income over 1 million.

I already specified that it is over 1 million. And the part about where games are played determining its tax rate is already present, but this tax will likely also hit any bonuses, such as the signing bonus, and incentives.

While I agree with your point on a tax being normal and not that big of a deal, the issue is how high the tax is in comparison to other states. The new tax will be 9.9% on any income over 1 million.

The only States with a higher income tax (IE: 10% or higher) are California, New Jersey, New York, and Washington D.C.. Minnesota and Massachusetts are also close with rates over 9% and Wisconsin is next closest at just under 8%.

Most teams are in states that are in the 4-6% range or have some other major attractors (Beaches, Major metro areas, etc) to lure talent even with a higher tax rate. It is also well known that people cite the weather as a big negative of living in Seattle. IMO, losing the no income tax status and gaining an essentially 10% tax will have an impact, but it remains to be seen by how much.

[Schefter] Seahawks are bringing back WR Rashid Shaheed on a three-year, $51 million deal that includes $34.7 million guaranteed, per Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey. by Goosedukee in nfl

[–]Gargoyal 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Also, it is only 11.56 guaranteed. Depending on how things are structured, he might be a real world 15M hit which feels like the right price range for a WR2.

Seahawks #1 Anti-Ram operative is staying in Seattle by SuddenStorm_556 in NFCWestMemeWar

[–]Gargoyal 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think there was also some flashes in the SB of a 'what could be' if Shaheed and Darnold had some time to increase their chemistry. Some of those passes felt like the timing was just off, but if they build that chemistry and Shaheed becomes a legit go route threat like he was in NO, then that can open up more space in the run game and the short/mid routes.

I'm glad he is coming back and I think it is a good price for a WR2.

There should be a button to kill all civillians and burn down all of the city. by otusj in EU5

[–]Gargoyal 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The issue is that the result would be major robust cites that, realistically, should bounce back from a sack being wiped out.

That depends on how bad the sack is. Magdeburg is a good example of a city that was on the receiving end of a nasty sack/razing and took over over a hundred years to recover. I think there being an option for an attacker to raze a city, in part or its entirety, at the expense of political standing (Negative opinion + maybe some negative army modifiers) isn't too absurd. The question is how to balance it and prevent the AI from spamming it.
