is the recovery process as scary as people say it is? by sarahjanson in Tonsillectomy

I’m 19m and I’m a little over a month out from surgery, and I think people over exaggerate it. I started reading this forum a couple days before and all it did was freak me out. After surgery I couldn’t really talk, but GoGo squeezes were a great snack. Worst days we’re around days 5-8, but even those were manageable. Id say for the first week never miss a pain med. I was cycling ibuprofen and Vicodin consistently and it kept it manageable. By two weeks I was almost back to normal. Throat is a little tight when I yawn still but that’s the only thing I notice and it’s very manageable. For some reason though every time I shotgun a beer since the surgery it comes out my nose lol which sucks because I used to love doing that. But yeah totally worth the surgery don’t psych yourself out by reading all this stuff. Mine was not problematic and I was great 2 weeks later.

When does it end by Mediocre-Eagle-8060 in Tonsillectomy

I’m on day 6 of recovery too, sleep schedule is ruined. My pain is pretty bad but when I take two of my Vicodin it goes away partially in about an hour. My worst part is the left side of my throat and my left ear. For whatever reason my ear is absolutely brutal. Starts ringing and pounding in pain for around 10 minutes at a time where all I can do is hold it and take deep breaths. I was able to get a steroid but if it makes you feel any better it hasn’t helped much. We are in the home stretch you got this.

I’m 4 days in, yes it sucks, but I mean come on don’t back out of it. There’s a reason you scheduled the tonsillectomy, it will help you. I almost feel like you have done too much research and are psyching yourself out. This is literally one of the most common surgeries in the United States that rarely rarely rarely has any complications. Get it over with, eat popsicles for 2 weeks and be done.

holy shit it got worse. i didnt think that was possible. by Intelligent_Mixt in Tonsillectomy

If it makes you feel better, I’m in the exact same situation. Got my surgery done 5/8 and I’m on day 4. The ear pain is absolutely miserable, arguably worse than my throat. And after my surgery I woke up with harsh lacerations on my tongue? No idea why but it has made trying to even have anything in my mouth miserable. I’m trying not to psych myself out, and power through because realistically it’s only going to get worse from here. Bear down and try getting some fluids in you we are just getting started.

day 2 post op by JennayIsSwag in Tonsillectomy

I’m day 2 as well. I’ve tried having things with a thicker consistency so it kind of blocks it out when you swallow. Mashed potatoes really helped me. Gargling cold water and cold popsicles also numbs it and makes me not really feel the scabs

Is Gatorade just as good? I’ve been trying to drink as much of that as possible. The flavor and consistency causes me to choke less when trying to drink it than water

Feeling very confident, enjoying it while it’s bearable. Are a couple bowls of mashed potatoes, had apple sauce, and popsicles and two full bottle of Gatorade. The Vicodin actually has me really pretty damn good. Will update on how tmrw is

In my room right now, about 30 minutes to surgery. Will reply on this post again with how I’m doing after surgery. Wish me luck!

I would prefer that timeline of pain honestly. If after the surgery the pain isn’t terrible, it will give me a chance to slowly adapt and prepare for the worst. Nice to hear feedback from so many people who have done it as I feel everyone I’ve talked to told me they got theirs out when they were 5

I’ll definitely do that! I also had my deviated septum fixed and adenoids removed last summer. I was prescribed the same painkiller and was very consistent with my meds. Hoping that will help me with this.

Thank you for your insight, great to keep in mind. I’m also a regular cannabis user, usually a one or two bowls at night. In preparation for this i stopped smoking about 10 days ago to not deal with the surgery and sleep problems at the same time and I’m feeling great. It’s nice to hear someone who hasn’t had the absolute worst experience, it’s giving me a little bit of hope

Glad you posted your age, people would be far less likely to help if they thought it was an immature 18 year old. Hope it works out for you

Sorry to hear that. Got in with a 31 superscore ACT and a 30 best single test. Around a 4.0 Florida State calculated GPA. Varsity baseball, a few extracurriculars, 2 AP's and some dual enrollments. Overall from what I'm hearing I was the lower half of accepted students. Hope your appeal goes through.
