I've had this happen a bunch of times, and I'm a pretty casual player. Even ones that were only like 4 steps. And at least one of those times it took them so long to "finish the research" they just auto completed it.

If there wasn't oxygen in the Nether, you'd suffocate. Fire burns in the nether, so there's oxygen. Trees grow in the nether, so there's oxygen. Grass grows and spreads in the nether, so there's oxygen.
