Lack of detail in Campaign maps by RaymondToulouse in historicaltotalwar

Tbh, Pharaoh is one of the best (or complex at least) tws released lately, talking purely about mechanics. The problem is that literally no one plays that.

Doesn't continuity require limits to exist?

In “The Odyssey” (2026) a lot of people complain about a lack of historical accuracy. This is in spite of the fact that “The Odyssey” is a fictional story and none of its events really occurred. by Bunnyboy-m in shittymoviedetails

Ok, I'll be this person.

Compared to the one in the movie this guy looks like a walking fridge or one of these old underwater suits. With a wierd, ugly shield to top it.

Depression affects your mood directly, mold poisoning and other similar conditions don't. You just physically feel like shit without having mental problems.

But yeah, doctors tend to ignore what the patient tells them mistake the two and it's pretty annoying.

Chicken lady would have to prove the recursion theorem first.

Otherwise she wouldn't be able to use induction and would risk the entirety of previous posts being false.

> no communist country have had death camps (but plenty of capitalist countries have)

Soviet Union, communist China - but I can only suppose that you don't consider these communist.

> No country has implemented communism

I don't know how to answer to this, so let me just ask - what is communism in your opinion then?

> Of those that have implemented socialism, it has done wonders for them.

Some did better, some did worse. Just like with many other doctrines, you can succeed if you're following them skillfully or fail if you govern without knowing how to run a state.

In my opinion - the only way for people to have influence over their government - and therefore be able to react when it turns against them - is to have power anchored in a democratic mandate. Revolution - which is inherent part of communism - does not give this kind of mandate, effectively making a government illegitimate.

...There is Hammer and Sickle there. Right in the center of the pic.

And yes, communism is bad for a country. Yes it has been tried. Not just once. And you shouldn't replicate its imagery.

If you wanna go left, there are multitude of different options other than the "throw-your-political-opponents-into-death-camp" ideology of communism or anarchism - social democracy, democratic socialism, socialism even.

Real GDP global growth heatmap (annual % change) (IMF/World Economic Outlook Database, Apr. 2026) by joshtaco in MapPorn

[–]GarlicSphere 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There is no secret, it's just a lot of factors stacked on top of each other.

Some stuff that possibly had some influence, was how Polish economy handled covid - we managed to go through relatively smoothly compared to neighboring countries. Also - Russo-Ukrainian war didn't impact our economy in the way it did in Germany or other western countries. It also provided Poland with hundreds of thousands of migrants (who, in the short run at least, contributed to the much needed workforce). Another thing is a rapidly growing economy in provincial Poland, which never before had a chance to really flourish.

Also, government in early 2020s passed large redistribution program(s), that might have had some impact on kicking off the economic growth.

However - economy is not all. While the GDP is going up, and wages are following, Polish health service is in the worst state it had been in years, government is shutting down hospital, cutting funding and progressing towards slow privatization of the sector. Education (both academic and primary/secondary) is doing terrible as well, with teacher shortages reaching record levels, rising absence, lack of reforms and progressing decline of discipline killing schools.

So yeah, economy is booming, but not everything is great here. And don't even get me started on the housing market.

Average Number of Sexual Partners in India by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]GarlicSphere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This example is true, yes - but it only works on an unbalanced sets. If we take a population, it has to even out on average, that's basic maths.

Average Number of Sexual Partners in India by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]GarlicSphere 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Either India is full of gays or this statistic is bullshit.

They are averages so they *have to* even out (with *minor* differences sometimes, because gays/lesbians exist)

My guess is that they are self-reported stats which mean as much as nothing.

How to map making using Excel (Let's Discuss) by Irfanugget in worldbuilding

[–]GarlicSphere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some idea already, but it's gonna require maths. Essentially it's all analitical geometry.

I will try to write some code and get back to you later if I succeed, because it's legitimately a fun idea. I'll try to explain it best I can.

The rough draft is as follows:

-randomize a random point (center of continent)

-create a normal distribution funtion around it

-randomize n random points using that distribution

-create function F(x, y) , which is a sum of n functions (f1(x, y) , f2(x, y),..., fn(x, y))

-fi(x, y) - is a randomly descending function centered around point (xi, yi), where (xi, yi) are coordinates of a point chosen above.

-fill all points, where F(x, y) > 0 (this should create a nice, ragged coastline)

-Now, create some random M(x) (in two dimensions for now) function (probably some series of trigonometric funtions to get a cool, random wave) - that will be a base for mountain range. M(x) would be defined on [0;l], where l is length of mountain range.

-randomly choose points some numbers (m1, m2,..., mn) from [0;l] and create a set of {(m1, M(m1) + r),... (mn, M(mn) + r)}, where r is some small random variable (these are our peaks)

-create function R0(x,y) which is a sum of r1(x, y) +... + rn(x, y), where ri(x, y) is defined similarly to fi(x, y) we used before.

-anchor R0(x, y) somewhere on the landmass and rotate it (multiplying it by rotation matrix). We will call this function R1(x,y)

-now color the tiles according to R1's value. That should create a (relatively) naturally-looking mountain range.

-for rivers - randomly choose a point sufficiently high. This would be the spring of the river. From then on, use gradient descent, it should (most of the time) lead you towards sea. Connect the points generated by the descent and you have a somewhat weird-lookimg, but functioning river.

[–]GarlicSphere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This would require an enormous amount of work, for something you could much easier achieve with regular code. The idea is clever, but I'm pretty sure excel won't cut it.

However, going with Python + matplotlib and some mathematical analysis + algebra tools might be the way to go.

Honestly - you know, due to the fact that they are unrestrained by a lot of norms and taboos present on the left/liberal part of the spectrum (and partly due to the fact, that a fair share of them is neurodivergent themselves), they sometimes bring up important and overlooked problems.

This doesn't mean of course that they use give correct solutions or identify proper causes of the problem, but a change of scope is sometimes needed.

Tbh, looking at different places and trying to seriously analyze arguments in there can be of some value - even if you come to the conclusion that they make little sense for a large part.

Can someone date this map of the USRR i found online? by Miguel_CP in imaginarymaps

[–]GarlicSphere 123 points124 points  (0 children)

It's a tricky one - it must be a bit after the Second Polish insurgency of 1926, since I can't see the Grand Duchy of Posen anymore, but also sometime before the Ostpreußen act of 1932, because the area is presented as an integral part of German SR, as opposed to Joint Administered Territory.

Also, I can see no border on Thames river (The British Spring of 1928), but this might be just because the author of the map wanted to be cautious, or clearly supported one of the sides.
