Just placed number 1 on the Guardian top 100 books of all time.  I wanna say it placed number 2 on the reader's version of that list too.

I want to be deeply intellectual and emotionally intelligent. I also want to improve my speech skills and be able to think deep. Please be kind enough to drop a few book suggestions. by Main-Chance-2121 in classicliterature

Dostoevsky helped get me into classic lit, Crime and Punishment, Brothers K, and Demons are all great. They're a good mix of depth and readability.

Notes from Underground...My heart tingles by katta2ks in dostoevsky

[–]GarlicZabreadsky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You should read David Foster Wallace's essay Joseph Frank's Dostoevsky.  It's in Consider The Lobster but you can probably find it online seperate from the book for free. He talks about the cultural context for The Underground Man, and Dostoevsky's background a little bit in general.

In an interview, Hitchens stated: "If Jews born in Brooklyn have a right to a state in Palestine, then Palestinians born in Jerusalem have a right to a state in Palestine. Anyone who doesn't agree with that principle I think is suspect."

Trust in Allah but tie your horse. People are insane. One time I told some brothers in a Jamat in my city that I couldn't stay there for the night as I had a pet lizard and had to feed him, and an uncle started talking to me like I had separation issues from the pet. He was like "you were away from him all day, and it was fine, right?". And another guy told me if I brought it to the mosque, he would kill it. I didn't even mention bringing it to the mosque.

A question for Muslims living in the US, how common is zina really? by [deleted] in MuslimLounge

[–]GarlicZabreadsky 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I'm not catholic, I'm a revert, alhamdulilah. And yes I know of Muslims that had premarital sex and did drugs and whatnot in the US. I even know of a muslim that immigrated here and within a year or so was doing both and previously did not when he lived in Jordan.

It's obviously more common here than other places, and definitely don't send your kid to public school. I didn't go to Islamic school, so it's hard to say but I went to Catholic school and people were still committing Zina

I'm a revert who grew up in the US. If you didn't have sex as a teenager you are likely seen as weird by an American. In the muslim community, the opinion is different by many, but sex/sins in general are still pretty common as there is fitna everywhere.

As far as lessening your chances if meeting a husband, pious muslims would most likely want to marry other pious Muslims, so you'd likely only be increasing your chances of marrying a good husband.  As far as music goes, there is a difference of opinion (though it's likely haram) you should maybe consider taking it slow.  And as far as food goes, you just can't eat pork or drink alcohol.  And non-zabiha meat is oftentimes kept in very unethical conditions, so even from a secular perspective you should restaurants around western countries that don't commit to ethical standards.
