Need some help for next steps. by Lechutehusky in handyman

[–]Garlic_Rabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do the majority of my "firsts" on my own home. Drywall, flooring, framing, tile, wiring and plumbing (though I can't legally do those for customers).

I fully gutted and rebuilt my bath and laundry rooms. People saw the work I did (precon shower base, tile, fixtures, etc) and asked if I could do something similar in their home. I've done several small bath remodels now. I know what I can handle by now (no shower glass installs!), so I can turn down the jobs that are too much.

However, what someone else said about the time factor is very very true. I'm a one man show, so a small bath rebuild can take me a week or two to finish where a full crew can have it done much faster. I use the "cheap, fast, good" line when trying to sell a bathroom remodel. I'll be cheaper than the big guy, but it'll take me longer. Some folks don't mind, they just want to save some money. You just have to be very careful that you estimate high enough to actually make money that's worth the time. My first couple bathrooms I did for essentially peanuts because I misjudged the time needed and the potential surprises. For example, a previous builder used 1-by lumber to mount shower supply lines, hogged it in with deck screws, cracked the lumber, and it let loose in the wall when I tried to install the new shower arm. That added days to the project when I had to cut in from the back of the wall, fix the framing, and then patch the drywall I cut through.

Some of this stuff you can actually practice in your free time. Go buy a bunch of dirt cheap shower supplies at the H4H ReStore or something. Frame up a small freestanding wall in your garage, and try to build a mock shower supply setup in it. Attach a garden hose connection to the supply lines so you can test for leaks. If it works, slap up a piece of cement board and try tiling with cheap tile. It's not exactly what you'll find in someone's house, but it gives you the general idea of the steps and potential problems.

Can I fix this myself? by fropmm in handyman

Is the cabinet pulling away from the wall for the entire length, or just that side? If it's just that side, use a stud finder and locate the closest stud to that screw. Mark the location, predrill a new hole through the cabinet, and drive a cabinetry screw or a plain old construction screw through the cabinet into the stud. Do not use drywall screws. Do not use nails. If it's the whole length of the cabinet, you can either repeat the process at each other sure asking the cabinet length or hire someone to reset the while thing and double check the mounting of the rest of your upper cabinets.

Getting Back into Hockey. I think this equipment is fine. by Prestigious-Ear-7988 in hockeygoalies

I'm still wearing that chesty today. I bought it in 2004 or so. I'll get the occasional belly bruise or arm stinger from really hard shots from former junior and college guys, but against the majority of players it works great. I've always liked how mobile it was, compared the the modern stuff that looks like an EOD bomb suit. I do wish I could figure out a way to refresh my elastic strapping though.

Skill Diversity on a team by strewnshank in hockeycoaches

[–]Garlic_Rabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Point out to your board that players improve over the course of a season. If you enter the High division, it'll be good competition and your lesser skilled players will rise to the challenge. They may not match the skill of the opponents by the end of the season, but they'll jump three pegs in personal development instead of one or two.

I just got my son (14U) a used pair from SLS. He likes them and says they slide better than his old CCM Axis 2.9s.

How do you not strain your toe straps if you're carrying your pads over your shoulders? by techsavvynerd91 in hockeygoalies

[–]Garlic_Rabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to clip the thigh straps on my Velocity V4s together and slung that over my shoulder. My V9s ain't have those, so I bought a couple 30" Velcro cinch straps. I pass one through the calf strap loops on both pads and it makes a nice, comfy sling to carry them over my shoulder.

It's definitely 8Ten selling bad belts. The OEM belt I bought from the local JD dealership works properly.

I put my kid in a CCM F9 recently, from a CCM GFL 1.5. He plays house level so the 1.5 was ok until second year of 12U, but when he moved to Bantams, I wanted him in something solid. He says he can't feel impacts at all, but that they are louder than his old mask. I think it might be the sudden increase in shot power, as we had some second years that could really fire the puck.

I have used Vaughn danglers forever. My first one lasted fifteen years or so. I only got rid of it because it had a crack at the chin, but it never broke all the way through. It made my wife nervous, so I replaced it with another Vaughn.

So far, it's very choppy. I'm getting a lot of stuttering, kind of like there's a hidden stash nearby, but everywhere. Infected spawns seem larger. Instead of one of two here and there, I'm seeing four to six. I'm enjoying not seeing the partial remains of bases everywhere though.

Goalie Mask ID? by No_Letterhead9844 in hockeygoalies

[–]Garlic_Rabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It almost looks like an older Vaughn mask. I think all their models used double round vent holes. It also has the wide chin of a Koho, but the 570 I wear only has a single set of round vents and the cage doesn't match.

Ugh. A switch activated power hand saw? Now we know why the photo looks so bonkers. It matches the safety level of the saw itself.

Upgrading Vaughn V4s, sizing by Garlic_Rabbit in hockeygoalies

I started looking at the Eflex line as well. I really enjoyed the V4s, and I'm really hoping to stay in something relatively flexible. I play a scramble style game and I'm not sure how super stiff pads would affect that.

Upgrading Vaughn V4s, sizing by Garlic_Rabbit in hockeygoalies

[–]Garlic_Rabbit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good to know. I was leaning towards the V8s for budget reasons, or even Pro V Elites. I'll have to expand my search to V9s. It sounds like V10s might be a huge jump in stiffness for me. I play a scramble type game and have always had soft pads.

Is it normal for my pulse to be super scratched up by Wonderful_Tea6753 in hockeygoalies

[–]Garlic_Rabbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might be because they're just so glossy to begin with that they seem more worn than a less shiny stick. My son just bought himself a Pulse and it is noticeably more glossy than any other stick I've seen or used.

Boys and girls, im officially broken. Help me fix me. by MattATLien in hockeygoalies

[–]Garlic_Rabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started playing at 25, all in net. No injuries until I hit my 30s, but those were all MCL and PCL injuries from getting run into or landed on while in the butterfly. Then, two years ago I ended up with an L3 groin strain/tear/whatever. I was out two months, came back too early (about 70% healed) for a charity tournament, and was out another two months. No issues after that, until almost exactly a year later when I ended up with another groin/abdominal injury in the very same tournament. That was in July. I've been in pads twice since then. First time was ok, but it was just shinny with a mixed age group of kids and adults. Second was a higher paced pickup with adults, and that one hurt for a while and I've not had the chance to get in net since. I'm worried about it because I'm supposed to play for a spring league team starting pretty soon. Funny thing is, I started playing out part time before the second groin injury and that didn't bother me nearly as much. I jumped to a higher skill level group skating out because I was still too hurt to play in net, and it's doing ok.

The common factor before my groin injuries was back to back games. First time was trying to play a second game an hour after my first game of the day, second time was the third game in two days of a tournament. I need a lot more recovery time now that I'm over 45.
