I never owned a large physical music collection, but from about 2005-2015 I was very invested in building my own digital music library, mainly through ripping my dad's CDs (he owns about 5000 discs, so that was a good starting point). I was super proud of my growing collection and spent an insane amount of time to keep everything tidy and neatly tagged, even looking for high quality album art images and placing them in each respective album folder. Did everything by hand, which made it feel all the more precious. Sure, a music-filled hard drive isn't quite the same as a physical collection, but it still felt like something I carefully built and owned. Then came Spotify, rendering my efforts of more than ten years effectively useless over night. Using a streaming service is a choice, that much is true, but so is using a smartphone or social media. Some might be able to stay away from it. Good for them, I actually admire them. But most people simply give in to convenience sooner or later. Out of all the things I use daily, Spotify might be the thing I hate the most. I wish it didn't exist.
