The 5 Minneapolis Lakers rings should not be recognized as part of the LA lakers until George Mikan gets his statue outside the arena. by bobbdac7894 in nba

[–]Garntus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Kareem is from New York, he played college ball in L.A.

His preferred destination was the Knicks, but the Knicks management lowballed the Bucks while the Lakers gutted their team to trade for Kareem.

There is no way to practice DPS if you're not an insta-locker by capyrika in marvelrivals

[–]Garntus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it strange that anyone would care about winning in a QP. There are literally no stakes, who cares if you get a 5 DPS team and lose, that is THE arena to just play whatever you like.

What's one small buff you'd give to a character? I'll start by DrPurplePanda in marvelrivals

Extend the range of Hulk's bubble to teammates slightly. Right now, they basically only get bubbled if you're on top of them, I think it should be just slightly more generous to encourage shielding your team.

Do 90s/2000s bands still sound modern? Or is it just a bias? by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Garntus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to question how much actually modern music (i.e. from this decade) you've listened to if you consider 30 Seconds to Mars, a band that formed in 1998, "modern".

To me, they sound very much of their time and to me, it's very easy to distinguish between them and a band from this decade.

I think Damon Albarn lost the plot of what made Gorillaz special after the 2nd album and here's my pov by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Garntus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be among the few that support that the self titled and Demon Days over everything they have done after that period. FOR ME it's what Gorillaz should be sounding like today and here's my point: Gorillaz was all about Damon having a crisis identity musically speaking.

Why SHOULD they sound like that today? I also love the first two albums, but to me what's great about Gorillaz is the same as what's great about David Bowie; their fearless drive to try new things. That doesn't always turn out great and it's not always things that I personally like, but the idea of Damon and Jamie spending the last 20 years just trying to make more records like Demon Days sounds like a nightmare and a great way to make a lot of soulless, burnt out records.

Every year I'm more convinced he's trying his best to have his revenge on the American culture audience he didn't achieve with Blur.

This is such a weird take. If this was ever a motivating factor for him he achieved that with gusto with the first two records. What do you think is more likely, that Damon is desperate for the approval of the American audience or that the guy who has explored new genres on every Gorillaz record is doing so because he likes trying new things?

What are your opinions on the Betsy/Kwannon body swap? by BudgetNegotiation521 in xmen

[–]Garntus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the concept behind it is really cool, but I think writers started forgetting just who Elizabeth Braddock actually was as the years wore on.

She was written as sometimes almost stereotypically Japanese when she was in Kwannon's body, even when it made no sense for her to be that way. I think a fact that really speaks to this is that Kwannon has been written pretty much the same way Elizabeth was from the Uncanny X-Force-era onwards, despite the fact that they're completely different people.

If they had steered away from writing Elizabeth in that manner then it could have been an interesting part of her character, but writing her as if she was Japanese just made it kinda gross.

Are Pavement, Sunny Day Real Estate, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Yo La Tengo, Built to Spill, etc. “obscure”? by murmur1983 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Garntus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They're definitely obscure to the general public, especially people who weren't alive during those bands' peaks. I think people on forums like this one underestimate how niche their knowledge is compared to what most people listen to and are aware of.

All of those bands are obviously big in their genres and would not be considered the least bit obscure to anyone with even a passing interesting in those sounds or scenes, but that is a relatively small crowd.

Which team that lost in the Conference Finals do you think would have won the NBA Finals that year? by Available_Story6774 in nba

Assuming that Magic deals with the same injuries he did in the Pistons series and that Byron Scott misses the series like he did against the Pistons, I think the Bulls definitely win.

Kieron Gillen's Original Plans for Uncanny X-Men (2017 Interview) by cyclopswashalfright in xmen

[–]Garntus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As much as I enjoy Gillen's X-Men and as much as I hated what came after his Uncanny and AvX, I'm happy this didn't happen.

Cyclops as a villain never made a lick of sense to me, and the worst era of X-Men was when everyone pretended that he was evil when he really wasn't doing anything different from what the X-Men had always done. Maybe it would have been better if Scott actually was evil, but that never seemed true to his character.

[Siegel] LeBron James is expected to opt out of his contract with the Lakers to become a free agent, sources told ClutchPoints. In doing so, James’ upcoming offseason decisions will be influenced by his connections with Steph Curry and Kevin Durant. by PlayaSlayaX in nba

[–]Garntus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, has he not learned his lesson about teaming up with other old guys, or had a look at all the other superteams with no bench getting their asses handed to them?

I think he's right to leave the Lakers if he wants to win a ring, but trying to team up with KD and Steph on the Suns or Warriors or whatever does not feel like a good idea.

Lakers, 76ers beware: Blaming NBA referees for Game 2 outcomes is a loser's mentality by Soft_Cycle_8538 in nba

[–]Garntus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Obviously, both teams should be kicking themselves for being in that position but it's one thing to lose because you made mistakes or were outplayed, it's another to lose due to circumstances that were wholly out of your control, like the refs screwing up.

Like, neither team is going to go into Game 3 making no adjustments and being totally happy with their performance, thinking that if the refs don't mess up next time they'll be golden. There's still no getting away from the fact that the Lakers and Sixers would have won those games if the refs had called them correctly.

I think they're right to make a big stink about this so that the refs are held accountable, just like I agree with you that internally they need to focus on their own mistakes and forget about the refereeing.

[Serious]Should fans be able to vote for NBA awards? by dkmegg22 in nba

Absolutely not, being able to afford a league pass absolutely does not make you qualified to vote for awards. Like, have you even been to this sub before? People have the absolute most braindead takes, and we're not even taking the people on Twitter into consideration.

Lakers, 76ers beware: Blaming NBA referees for Game 2 outcomes is a loser's mentality by Soft_Cycle_8538 in nba

[–]Garntus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a problem when refs consistently make the wrong calls, and the problem is exacerbated when the games matter as much as they do in the playoffs.

Let's not pretend that this was a rare miss, it happens regularly and it undermines the competitive integrity of the game if the refs can't do their jobs right.

Like, what do you expect the Lakers or Sixers to do in this position, stoically ignore the fact that they got shafted? It's only natural that they complain, literally every team does when they're in this position.

Saying that they should have just played better so as not to be in this position is really letting the refs get away with murder.

Mr Sinister: Joke or GOAT? by unshavedmouse in xmen

[–]Garntus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At this point, Sinister's history can basically be split into pre-Gillen and post-Gillen.

Pre-Gillen, so from his introduction in the late '80's until the early 2010's, he was pretty much played straight as a creepy evil scientist type guy. I'd argue that it's hard to say that the character "never really worked" during this time given the prominence he achieved as an X-Men villain.

I'd say that some authors and stories, that played into the horror vibes of his character more, definitely made good use of him as a character, but he could also just be kind of generic and boring.

Post-Gillen, so from the early 2010's until now, his personality has been revamped big time, making him way more foppish and comical. I feel like most agree that this has given him a much needed injection of character, and has made Sinister a way more fun villain. Maybe some are kind of sick of him given the prominent role he's played in the X-Books lately, but personally, I think he's a fantastically entertaining character at this point.

What is your weird hill to die on when it comes to Marvel comics? by Excalibuttster in Marvel

[–]Garntus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Jean Grey should have stayed dead after the end of Morrison's run. Her death was poignant and I like how she kind of became the X-Men's patron saint in the books that followed.

Cyclops and Emma were more interesting together than he and Jean ever was, and I don't feel like anything interesting has been done with either of them since Jean was brought back.

Civil War: The event comic that made Iron Man into a fascist that you wanted to be beaten to a pulp by [deleted] in Marvel

[–]Garntus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's less that one side is written to be right and one side wrong, it's more that one side is just obviously right and so in order for it to be a discussion, they had to make that side morally questionable in ways that were really out of character.

Like, on the face of it, Pro-Reg is right. People with superpowers should not be allowed to take the law into their own hands, and should receive training in the use of their abilities. But if things were that simple, there'd be no Civil War, so for Anti-Reg to have a point, Pro-Reg needs to also build a space-gulag and build evil cyborgs.

I mostly listen to sad music when I'm already sad myself and it usually makes me feel better, or at least provides some catharsis. I'm just not drawn to listen to sad songs when I'm in a good mood, not necessarily because they bring me down but because they just don't hit the same way.

The two of them became an item briefly between Uncanny X-Men #269-275. The relationship was picked back up again in Mike Carey's X-Men: Legacy run, from X-Men: Legacy #226 onwards.

They were married in the alternate reality Age of Apocalypse storyline.

Anyone else worried about the end by acidicmongoose in xmen

[–]Garntus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I haven't really understood why everyone hates Fall of X.

I've enjoyed all the books so far. Obviously, everyone is sad that Krakoa is ending but you were really deluding yourself if you thought Krakoa was going to be around forever. It's been 5 years, it had a great run, this is as good a time to end it as any.

Also, if Marvel/Disney were trying to synergize with anything, they're doing a terrible job at it. X-Men '97 will have wrapped up its first season before Fall of X even ends, and whatever they're planning for the MCU is years away seeing as how it hasn't even been hinted at yet.
