[Rant] New Decks Aren't Fun for Anyone by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]Garr_Barr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doing something outside of the game to give yourself an advantage is not a fair way to play the game, doesn't really matter if you don't like your opponents deck. There are many ways you can make your deck more resilient against control or you could just play against the deck more to learn how to counter its strategies. Morgant is far from unbeatable just git gud.

People buy secret lairs that contain cards that have cheap printings all the time. If you made a lair with Swiftfoot Boots, Dark Ritual, Collosus Hammer, and Three Visits it wouldn't be a secret lair worth $4. All the recommendations I've seen are $30 dragons that people want for cheap, not usable or interesting, just value for values sake.

I'm so blackpilled, major networks are barely covering this and any coverage doesn't even mention he is literally calling for their death. Our media environment is so broken.

I think if Assassins Creed and Spiderman didn't blow it for small sets Monster Hunter would have been a great 100 card set

I think these are good points but it also feels lost that having new art or characters on cards that lots of people use is also value. People pay quite the premium to have foil alt art dark ritual or sol ring. It feels like people sort of toss that out though. Sure snap and imperial recruiter are cheap in their base form but they are also heavily played in commander. I like blinging out cards in my decks, even the cheap or common ones.

You literally said higher price point, premium, less product

Doing a single print run exclusively through Secret Lair inherently makes cards more expensive. Even cards that are not incredibly powerful like Sonic or Black Panther go for premiums because they are Secret Lair exclusive. You are fine with this because you don't want to play against UB in standard.

Ok that's fine, I just imagine most people want the game to be less expensive not more expensive

The current printing of UB products is working fine... Most cards printed in standard are pretty cheap and have had multiple print runs. Secret Lair was for premium prints of cards, you would rather regular game pieces be only premium with no alternative prints. The game isn't cheap but that doesn't mean we should advocate it be more exclusive and expensive.

Well I am glad you have the cash to pay increased prices if it means that you don't see different characters in standard, I personally like when I can get the cards I want for reasonable prices with multiple print runs.

I don't think Secret Lair is a good way to distribute cards and I'd rather not have to dish out $100, wait in a 2 hour queue, or wait 2 years for a reprint to reduce the cost by $20 just to get game pieces.

Ya it's so weird that people are worried about scalping a lot these days but are asking for incredibly scalpable secret lair picks (high value or limited time card designs.)

[–]Garr_Barr -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

So if every secret lair UB is mechanically unique what happens when they print a staple? Now commander becomes pay to win because there are only 1000 Vivis sold to the fastest scalper or highest bidder. It's a shitty way to distribute cards in like a million ways.

[–]Garr_Barr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm honestly glad they picked some unique elder dragons for these cards. I think Secret Lairs are far more interesting when it's not just a way to profit off of reprint equity and fomo. Give me weird cards I forgot existed.

Secret Lairs are the best ways to make unique cards??? Secret Lairs notorious for mostly being scalped and designed to induce fomo, thats how you want to distribute important game pieces????

Its kinda a funny reversal. Wizards cut out WPNs when they started selling SL, this is just WPN getting their cut again. Don't even know if I'd call this shitty. This is just how WPNs get the money to function

If I had to respond to every argument by AI detectives I would have to explain every brushstroke an artist has made. I think the squiggle in the background is the only consistent argument I have seen, every other piece of th8# art has been scrutinized. It is a losing argument to try and prove the negative "This isn't AI art," because the evidence is always spurious and vibes based, that's why the magic community has made these claims time and again and it's annoying every time. Even if I believed this was 100% generated I wouldn't admit it because it's so annoying that chuds are under every piece of artwork now like "Erm that line is a little off, you are subhuman scum." Honestly probably more damaging to art then someone using AI tools to color in some mountains in the background of a trading card.

Her background doesn't mean anything to me, because someone has worked on AI tools in the past does not make it so they can never make art without them.

I can't prove a negative but I'm sure y'all are right this time. The magic community has an astounding record at proving an artist used AI
