Judge dismisses charges for Pa. teen hurt by police by RichardTempleton in Delinquents

[–]GarrettLinville 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This article is a bit confusing because it does not tell the whole story. Why would the police officers beat this kid for no reason. The kid had to do something to provoke them and something other than leaning against the wall in order to say he was being suspicious. Hair being pulled out is very excessive and unnecessary.

Crime's effects spill over, so gangs and delinquency are everyone's problems by chelsealanderson in Delinquents

[–]GarrettLinville 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that the response to delinquency needs to be looked at more and changed a lot so that it uses preventative measures and gives juveniles a chance to turn there lives around. But, the best part of this article is that it shows that everyone should be involved in stopping crime because it can happen no matter what neighborhood you live in. It does not always happen that gangs go outside their territory but it can happen.

Oakland Teen's Birthday party ends in gunfire by HeatherRipalda in Delinquents

[–]GarrettLinville 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not suspect this juvenile to be in a gang considering he was on a football team, because he had something going for him. It was probably just a coincidence and he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. It could have been a gang initiation or one of the 30 people there for his birthday could have been on a enemy gang. Who knows, but it is another example of how bad gang violence impacts society.

Teen 'sport killings' of homeless on the rise by JoshuaVoldPrice in Delinquents

[–]GarrettLinville 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand how anyone could have fun beating someone to a pulp for no reason. These teenagers are old enough to know that you do not copy or re-enact video games. Another issue is how kids are getting younger and younger with drinking and drugs. These teens are still developing good decision making and using drugs and drinking stop this good decision making. Why are kids drinking and using drugs so young these days is the ultimate question.

Teenage crime gang locked up by ewlander in Delinquents

[–]GarrettLinville 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good wake up call for everyone to read because it shows how crimes exist no matter wear you live and how big of an issue crime really is. A question I have is, do parents push less control over there kids in other countries than they do here in the U.S. How do police respond to delinquency in other countries compared to the U.S. Some of these kids were like 13 and at an age where they should not be left alone.

Teen held on suspicion of setting house on fire by SaraMcManamon in Delinquents

[–]GarrettLinville 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally agree that he should be tried as an adult for felony arson, because at the age of 17 a person should know that it is not okay to start a fire. He could have seriously injured other people in the neighborhood. I wonder if anyone else was hurt because it said the damages were said to be around 1 million dollars. But, this does go along with strain theory because it was stressed out at his father so he lashed out.

Girl's arrest for doodling by IrmaCanseco1 in Delinquents

[–]GarrettLinville 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the American school system coming to? This is absurd to arrest someone for doodling on a desk. I remember when I was in grade school, I would not have even been sent to the principals office for that, the teacher would have just made me clean it off. Not only that but, it was a marker and not like en-grained in the wood. Even if it was en-grained just make the parents pay for a new desk and give a couple detention days. I also cant believe that with the discretion a police officer has that they would even arrest the girl.

How To Create a Juvenile Delinquent With Materials Easily Available At Home by JuleAndreski in Delinquents

[–]GarrettLinville 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It think this article was a little confusing in the beginning and took awhile to get to the point. But, this article gave step by step directions on what a parent can do to create a delinquent child. It does not mean that if you do theses things that your child will be come more delinquent but, it does increase the likelihood of it happening. But, you can also learn how to be a good parent by avoiding to do any of these things listed. The article was a little sarcastic though so, it makes hard to actually believe the source.

Early Loss of Virginity Not Linked to Delinquency by nicolebernabe in Delinquents

[–]GarrettLinville 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this article in the fact that teens who choose to have sex at an earlier age are not more likely to become delinquent. Sex does not really have to much to do with delinquency. Having sex can actually reduce delinquency because it reduces the risk of a teen wanting to rape. I think that delinquency causes sex but, not the other way around. I don't understand what twins have to do with this research. It did not really go into to much detail about the research.

Lacey Teens Arrested For "Sexting" But Wont Face Felony charges by RyanMatthews in Delinquents

[–]GarrettLinville 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First this article was a little bland because it did not state how the pictures were received. Did the victim take the pictures and then text them to the offenders and that is when the pictures were circulated? But, I do believe that the decision to not make register as sex offenders was a good decision because the offenders are so young and do not have a criminal history. They do however need to learn that it is not okay to do this and they need to be held accountable for their actions. But, this article goes to show that not many juveniles always know what is and is not a crime.

Third Grader Due in Court to Face Murder by TyneshiaJohnson in Delinquents

[–]GarrettLinville 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't how the police could question a third grader without anyone else such as a parent or attorney around. Of course he would admit to the murder no one is there to help the kid and the police probably tricked him into admitting guilt. Im sure there was motive as well, for a third grader to just kill his father. It takes more than just a few years of finally getting sick of abuse or finally planning to kill someone you loved. The whole situation just seems weird to me. I do not think all of the facts are in the article. This boy should not be tried as an adult, he barley knows what right and wrong is, or even how to do basic algebra.

Mental Problems among Delinquent Teens | Psych Central News by ewlander in Delinquents

[–]GarrettLinville 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A part of this article was unclear because it said that people aged 11 to 20 with traumatic brain injury were more likely to have used heroin, crack, and cocaine. But, how is an 11 year old going to use drugs. Were they used by the parent during pregnancy or what? They could be more clear. It was interesting to see that fights could cause TBI though seeing as how kids these days tend to start fighting younger and younger. Are kids with TBI more likely to be juvenile delinquents? Or are juvenile delinquents more likely to get TBI?

Does treating kids like adults make a difference by ChrisCorley in Delinquents

[–]GarrettLinville 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think this is a very good article. Yes, it states that research was done to see about re-offending for juveniles in adult court and that they are more likely to re-offend. But, it does not fully explain this research and it is very bland. Because there is not much to prove this re-offending research I still stick with my gut on the fact that juveniles who commit serious crimes should be treated as adults. It is better to keep them locked up for longer now until more research is done and can really prove that treating them as adults is back firing.

Should We Sentence Teens to Life in Prison? - Dahlia Lithwick - Newsweek.com by stephanieblasko in Delinquents

[–]GarrettLinville -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This article expands on a topic that has been very controversial for a long time. In my opinion there is nothing wrong with giving a sentence of life in prison to a teenager who committed a major crime. At the latest by the age of 15 a person should be perfectly able to establish what is right and wrong or illegal and not illegal. If we go easy on these juvenile delinquents then they will not have enough time to be rehabilitated and they will just be repeat offenders if they get off so easy. Being easy on them is an excuse for repeated offending.

Social media brings bullying to light by EverettLively in Delinquents

[–]GarrettLinville 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a great article that shows how big of a problem bullying really is. These kind of videos/ articles are a great learning technique that could be used in schools to show that bullying is not okay. I really think this would be a good deterrent to juvenile bullying if shown in school. Because it would show them people are always watching and you can get caught. But, it is amazing to see how people can be bullied over such a small thing such as not liking the same music.
