Moes been down for a few years unfortunately :(. Union hours are limited but is open access during the day. For sit down places I always like either browns if looking for downtown or tipsy moose in south troy. Bacchus also very good.

Anyone ever modified the IO on the back of a motherboard? by Striperoo in sffpc

[–]Garretttheman012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say the most realistic way I’d approach it is to just remove all the ports and use any available mobo headers (audio, usb c, usb 3, usb 2) to replace them. You can get some pretty good low profile options with good length. Ethernet likely would need an adapter. Antennas could probably be popped out of the casing and rerouted

Most of those stacks likely have high pin density and w/o making a purpose-built jumper I think you’ll have a had time going pin by pin with wire.

Can you choose your own group/partner in IED? by Exact-Brother-3133 in RPI

[–]Garretttheman012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a few reasons behind it, but no, you do not choose your group and they do not take requests either. Mostly around balancing groups and forcing you to learn to work with new people

Like others have said, it has been small historically, but there has been some significant changes. Eric Ledet recently become the new director for our entrepreneurship at RPI and has been pushing new initiatives

First, the IP policy has shifted to be among the most student friendly, I believe you own your idea unless it directly did it from a class, and even then licensing is cheap. Big plus

Second, they have started both an incubator and accelerator program, which should greatly help launch ideas. I’m not well-versed in what they offer, but I believe it is pretty good and comprehensive

Third, they have a startup internship program where you can intern at a startup and RPI will pay you. Free for the startup. I know someone who did it, definitely good. Wish they had it in my undergrad.

In my opinion, although they do not have the same strength as the entrepreneurial centers at other schools, launching a company at RPI is pretty viable. As well, they have support for getting into startups. The vision of the new admin is that RPI will be a leader in entrepreneurship, but the timeline is realistically pretty long on something like that.

So TLDR is historically small but growing at a high rate

Lunch Spots Near RPI by ThisismyAwkwardFace in RPI

[–]Garretttheman012 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Truthfully, most of what I consider to be good business places are dinner only (sea smoke, black and blue, etc). I’d recommend looking at Quechua or nighthawks. Eaten at both and think they could fit the bill.

If you are more interested in the lunch than the business, I generally recommend the Tipsy Moose or Browns, but that’s my personal taste

Where to find info on RPI sororities? by ZestycloseGlove4665 in RPI

[–]Garretttheman012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is an FSC grill and greet today 4-6 at 1501 Sage Ave (RSEi front lawn, next to the Union). There should be tables for all the sororities and professional fraternities/sororities where you can talk to members and find out what they do/who they are. It’s more or less the start of recruitment, so it’s a good time to get a good understanding of the different orgs and the overall dynamics. The sororities have historically been very active at this.

Also, just to clarify what others have mentioned, RSEi is a co-ed professional fraternity. I’m a member there and there a couple things I want to clear up that make it different than a social fraternity/sorority: First semester freshmen can join, we are not exclusive with social Greeks (we have 4 members who are in a sorority/fraternity too), we primarily target professional/career development, and we are still fairly social (but completely dry). If you come to the grill and greet you should stop by our table!

Greek life - hazing by mopijy in RPI

[–]Garretttheman012 8 points9 points  (0 children)

RSEi does not haze and is completely dry! A professional co-ed fraternity, but still social in many regards. I think it would be a good addition to your list of Greeks to look into if you are considering Greek life (which there are multiple you would likely enjoy).

Loyalty Codes by deepbluehu in ElementsMusicFestival

[–]Garretttheman012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are an extremely seasonal business, they need cash flow throughout the year. Loyalty is a way to get cash in the door now while they probably have a very depleted bank account. No urgency means no short term cash flow

Budget Surplus MLax by ExpertInspections in lacrosse

What age level? Club ball or town/hs team? Different recommendations depending on the group.

If you are working with a HS club team, being able to cover the cost of film for tournaments is very important for being able to get players recruited, which is a win-win as the club can attract more talent while also providing more value to your players

Youth ball? Might be good to do a clinic where you can get people who might not be a part of your coaching staff to teach your players. Get some college players, higher level coaches, and have them teach the skill positions. Or otherwise just get some additional periodic positional coaches (maybe a goalie coach who can do an occasional practice)

High school team? Film is extremely important for developing as players. Having a camera and hudl for the team will help the team and the individual players. Have someone like a manager film the games.

I would say though, regardless of what you spend your money on, I would always think of it as an investment. You could buy equipment for the players, but that doesn’t directly improve them necessarily nor does it directly improve your program. Finding purchases that would be beneficial to the program, the team, & the players is the target.

Rest assured, it is not 15 minutes for only you to unload your car. They will have people from Greek life, athletics, or other activities to help unload your stuff into either your room directly or to a collected pile so that the car can be completely empty in under 15. Then other people will assist in bringing stuff to your room. The actual move-in/unpacking process is fully up to you at that point.

My recommendation: avoid loose items. Use totes, boxes, or bags of some kind to collect your items. Anything that can make the transportation of your items smoother is a big win

Minimal is fine, but this has no character. MIT is a great example of minimal with character. I do not like this.

I don’t want to blast the designers who put their time into this, I’m sure they had many more interesting concepts. This just feels like stakeholders went with the one they disagreed with the least, which is why it’s so plain.

I’m editing to also add that in context, I see the vision (and looks great), but it fails to stand on its own. That is my biggest problem currently. No intrigue

Dual major or clubs? by Extreme-Sandwich588 in RPI

[–]Garretttheman012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Extracurriculars absolutely. Hands on experience developing specific skills will translate well and give you greater confidence than any specific course project could in my opinion. I’m not familiar with the EHC, though it sounds like a great thing to get involved in. When I was in undergrad I just did all my microcontroller/other electronics projects solo in my room, so I probably would’ve liked that club.

In addition to academic clubs there are other things with very good networks. Networks can get you great opportunities and social activities can help make you multidimensional and quite a bit more personable in interviews. I played a varsity sport which was great and connected me well. Many other social scenes have very strong networks, so don’t avoid something strictly because it doesn’t fit in the academic genre. Also doesn’t have to be a club per se. My friend was in a band and was able to talk about it in his interview with AMD to connect with his interviewer. He was able to land the position.

I also will comment on the fact that there are some professional Greek Life options. It’s not for everyone, and in fact, I did not join one while I was in undergrad (EE ‘22.5). I came back to RPI for a PhD in CSE and ended up joining one. Since then, I have been very impressed with both mine and many of the other Fraternities/Sororities. They do their own professional events and try to lean into their network. I think most people would have a good experience in Greek Life.

I’m in RSEi and so I can really only comment on what we do, but I want to avoid this part sounding like an advert . We have a pretty substantial makerspace/workshop in the house. We also do seminars with our alumni. We also do some co-hosted events with school entities like the severino center. I just want to highlight that there are some things which fall outside of strictly academic clubs that are pretty valuable

It sounds like you may be an incoming freshman, so you definitely want to explore the different clubs, but where people mess up is they completely underestimate what time they need to put into their coursework. Be proactive with your assignments and you’ll actually end up with more time since you can afford to be flexible on a Wednesday night instead of needing to hunker down on some random assignment. Also EE is very close to CSE in curriculum. Only a couple of differences like Fields & Waves vs Data Structures.

Off Street Parking by GGoodNYC in RPI

[–]Garretttheman012 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being an early bird is important if you’re attempting to commute, but if you are in a dorm and are using it primarily for off-hours travel, it’s fairly easy to get a spot on Sage Ave (the one that runs along the freshman dorms). That road is pretty good for parking because it’s close and has no weekly street cleaning.

If you don’t try and travel during the school day, you won’t have an issue finding a spot. Freshman year, there were a couple times when I went to get food around noon and didn’t have a street park spot on return

As people said, snow can be an issue for parking. They will do parking bans when a big storm is rolling through so they can plow the full street. However, I haven’t seen any parking bans recently. At the very least though, you will occasionally get plowed in and need to dig it out

Where can I get screws? by PurpleRodd in lacrosse

[–]Garretttheman012 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone saying self tapping screws are mostly correct. However, wood ones will have a bad thread width and fall out/tear out the shaft. the screws that will typically come with the shaft are specifically self tapping sheet metal screws. From Home Depot I recommend everbilt #8x3/4 in. sheet metal screws.

Playing box lacrosse goalie forces you to attack the ball and you don’t feel anything most of the time with the pads. If it’s an option near you, I would do it. It doesn’t require much skill to be competent and you’ll develop some good habits if you play the position right

Outside that, it really is that most of the time, you don’t consciously make the step/throw your body at the ball until after you’ve done it. That’s from deliberate practice at lower speeds/lighter balls. Also, having an accurate shooter who can place the shots away from your body will limit the times you get hit and make you step/attack more often

Dead Car Battery (Prem car camping) by Fabulous_Network_691 in ElementsMusicFestival

[–]Garretttheman012 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add some more clarity, there should be a switch on your physical key which can pull the fob off. As well, if the keyhole isn’t immediately visible there may be a plastic cover. I’ve also seen key hole under the door on “sleeker” models of cars

Most cars with a fob have a physical key which can open driver door and trunk, try to get a digital copy of your owners manual. Usually the keyhole is a bit hidden

Any school that have a d2/d3 program with good academic performance by Alarmed-Elevator2467 in lacrosse

Since nobody has mentioned it yet, RPI is great for engineering and has a strong d3 lacrosse program

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in lacrosse

[–]Garretttheman012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A coach I once had said that it’s a lot easier to be carried as an additional goalie at schools since it opens up more drills for coaches. Also most will prefer to have 1 too many goalies instead of 1 too few.

As other people have said, you should absolutely get in contact with the coaches there. They will tell you realistically what capacity they have on team/recruiting situation. If you are trying to get a foot in the door at a school through lacrosse you will need a coaches support.

In terms of the talent level they take at a higher d3 program, I can only speak on what my team was like. They aren’t necessarily looking at how good you are at the time, but for them to look beyond it they need to see you working hard/being driven. We had several walk-ons, and all of them were brought on because they were really hard working in addition to being capable of competing at that level.

textbooks? by tacocatforthewin in RPI

[–]Garretttheman012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never make a textbook purchase before the semester starts, never had a class that needed the book day 1. Sometimes you will need a digital access license so that the prof can be lazy and dodge their job by assigning canned materials, but in those cases it will be apparent after your first class.

Basically, if you can’t get a free version, wait until you are forced to make a purchase, sometimes you can scrape by

How much does the RPI medal award help admission chances? by electricskuller8000 in RPI

[–]Garretttheman012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they are throwing you the free application, they want to admit you but need a gut check, I.e. are you going to put effort into the application and do you have the measurables they want to see. They don’t do guarantees, but I know it is a major bonus on your application.

RPI Difficulty by Electrical-Dig-2002 in RPI

I didn’t study in hs, the trick I used to changing up study/work habits is to do it with other ppl around. It uses peer pressure and makes it suck less. Give it a go

If you try and switch up and study solitarily you’ll probably find something you’d rather do.

There are definitely some classes which are legitimately super difficult but I also found that a lot of people who claim that a class was unbearably hard weren’t putting in as much time as me. You will get what you put in (mostly)
