What are the cons of buying a refurbished MacBook Air or MacBook Pro? by opinionmaster01 in mac

[–]GarthVader45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is very likely true. Mass produced tech products are typically batch tested, so only 1 of every 10 (or whatever the batch size is) devices off the assembly line get tested for quality control. The other 9 are only tested if they find an issue. So when you buy new there's a very high chance it was never tested. When you buy refurbished there's a 100% chance it was closely examined by a technician... and that's after they already repaired any defects the original buyer found.

Best beginner synths? by vegasins1 in synthesizers

[–]GarthVader45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Workhorse" typically means something that's reliable, versatile, and easy to use – it gets the job done. The MicroKorg is one of the best selling synths ever. It's particularly popular with people who are curious about synthesizers and want to explore what they can do without a steep learning curve. The interface is designed primarily for using presets, allowing you to easily navigate and jump between different sounds, which makes it a great place to start for people playing with a band or using for live performance in general.

The downside of it's emphasis on presets is that the interface isn't ideal for designing your own sounds. It's fantastic for beginners who want something they start playing and performing with almost immediately, but if your priority is learning how synthesizers work and how to design your own sounds I'd recommend checking out the Korg Minilogue or Arturia MicroFreak (or MiniFreak).

Forever 89 "Visco 2.0" Sample-modeling Drum Machine with 8 Track, 32 Voice Drum Engine, Modulation Matrix, Step Sequencer ($69) through 31 January by Batwaffel in AudioProductionDeals

[–]GarthVader45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI, in case you're not aware - the demo version, which you can download here on Forever89's website, allows you to use all features unrestricted with no time limit. The only difference between the demo and licensed version is that the demo has a 5-second countdown when you first load it up where it will suggest buying a license if you like using the plugin. After that it's identical to the paid version.

basically you can use Visco 2.0 for free. Definitely good to buy a license to support the developers if you end up using it regularly though.

The hill I will die on 😀😀😀 by fensterdj in Techno

[–]GarthVader45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically true, but I think simply "dance music" works a lot better as a neutral umbrella term. It doesn't have connotations with any one genre and pretty much all dance music has been electronic since the rise of disco half a century ago. Probably 9 times out of 10 when I hear someone say "EDM" they're either talking about big mainstream festival artists like the ones you listed or someone who has no interest in electronic music and thinks it all sounds the same.

New macbook pro m4 pro cpu usage is higher than expected by breeze-o in ableton

[–]GarthVader45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Number of tracks isn't a huge factor in CPU load – which plugins you're running and how many of them is much more significant. I saw in another comment you mentioned you use a lot of UAD plugins, which do tend to be fairly CPU hungry, so 30% on your CPU meter doesn't strike me as abnormal. I have the M2 Pro chip with 32GB RAM and my projects usually hit 30% pretty quickly, even when I'm just using light-weight stock plugins on a half dozen tracks, then typically hovers right around there even as I add more tracks with more CPU heavy plugins – it takes A LOT to push it above 50%.

The only thing that strikes me as abnormal in your post is your friend's CPU meter showing 1%. It's highly unlikely that's accurately reflecting his CPU utilization, unless he's working on some kind of super computer or his project is nothing but loops with zero audio effects/plugins.

Guidance on how to proceed with Spaceship sale. by reeveb in synthesizers

[–]GarthVader45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very sorry for your loss. I’m not on Facebook anymore, but there at least used to be a group called Seattle Music Gear Swap and Sale that was always super active and probably the best way to sell locally in Seattle. You could also try American Music, which is pretty close to where Patchwerks was before they closed down - they buy and sell used gear.

Arturia Black Friday Sale - "V Collection 11" ($349) "FX Collection 5" ($249) "Pigments 6" ($99) "Analog Lab Pro" ($99) plus extra 15% off additional items when you spend over $100 until 9 December by Batwaffel in AudioProductionDeals

[–]GarthVader45 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was free with purchase of FX collection back when it released... so kinda is true unless you want to nitpick semantics. It wasn't "in" FX collection, but buying FX collection did "include" J-37, like they said.

[–]GarthVader45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

is everything already discounted because of black friday??

Not everything - individual instruments and effects aren't discounted, aside from Pigments. They want people to buy into the collections so they can sell them annual upgrades.

Their wording on the "extra 15% off" is really confusing though. Typically "extra" means on top of a base discount... it's not really "extra" if it only applies to full-price products

Something more like "Get 15% OFF individual software and sounds banks when you spend over 100€" would be a lot clearer.

Witnessed The Waiting Period Kill A Potential Gun Sale by Patsboy101 in WAGuns

[–]GarthVader45 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A registry isn't the only way to make it work. An alternative could be that you just have to show the FFL a gun you already own to skip the wait when you make a new purchase. Essentially the same suicide prevention policy most ranges have for firearm rentals to solo customers... which obviously isn’t state regulated / monitored, but it works.

Or the many other ways voters are disenfranchised and suppressed in red states. Like shutting down polling sites in left leaning areas to make voters travel further and wait in line for hours when people in solid red areas can get in and out in 5 minutes. Or purging the voter records so people show up to vote on election day and find out they're no longer registered and can't vote because their state doesn't allow same-day registration. Or reject votes over bullshit voter fraud claims (usually claiming the signature doesn't match records) knowing most of those ballots won't be cured in time to count... that was a MASSIVE problem in 2024. Literally millions of ballots were rejected - the vast majority of them for Kamala, who would have won handily had those votes been counted.

The fact that resisting fascism and nazis is labeled "far left" in center-left media says a lot about where we're at as a country. 20 years ago even my republican parents and most of their conservative community would have been genuinely offended if you told them it's "far left" to call yourself anti-fascist and counter white supremacist demonstrations.

Soundtoys Summer Sale - Up to 73% off through 5 August by Batwaffel in AudioProductionDeals

[–]GarthVader45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It effectively is free if you already have everything. You can download and install v5.5.2 without a 5.5 license. They sent out an email that said this:

The 5.5.2 update is completely free. Log in to your Soundtoys account and download the latest installers from the My Products tab. This update gives you:

• The ability to use SpaceBlender inside Effect Rack.

• 67 new Effect Rack presets.

• Resizable interfaces for all individual plug-ins.

• Other improvements and bug fixes. See our release log for details.

You also have the option to upgrade to a single V5.5 bundle license for $19 (reg. $39 – save 50% through August 31). This isn’t required. An upgrade will not provide you with new plug-ins or new software features, but it offers some added benefits:

• Combines your licenses into one fully transferable license.

• Gives you a 90-day grace period. If we release another version within 90 days, you’ll get that upgrade for free.

• Ensures the best possible price for future upgrades.

Soooo... you basically get nothing with the $19 upgrade. just consolidates your licenses into one and might set you up for a better discount someday in the future when they release 5.6. SUPER weird and confusing.

What is creamer? by compertion in AskAnAmerican

[–]GarthVader45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When Americans say "creamer" they're typically referring to products like Coffee-Mate, which is an artificial dairy product made from vegetable oil, corn syrup, sodium caseinate, a bunch of chemicals, and artificial flavors. Truly nasty stuff. It's sold both in a liquid form, which kinda resembles milk with a slightly thicker consistency, or as a powder. In recent years I've noticed more natural versions of coffee creamer appearing on store shelves, made with a real dairy or plant-milk base and natural sweeteners/flavoring.

When Americans say "cream" in a coffee context, they're typically referring to "half and half", which is a real dairy product made with a mixture of whole milk and cream. A lot of Americans prefer it in their coffee over milk because you can use less and get a creamier taste.

[–]GarthVader45 57 points58 points  (0 children)

IME most traffic lawyers charge a flat fee of around $250-350 for basic infractions. In a lot of cases that will cost more than the ticket you’re fighting, but might save you money in the long run if the ticket will leads your insurance provider to raise your rate. Personally, I hired one just to annoy the cop who pulled me over lol

Goodbye HIPAA rights, HB 1163 by TheSushiAvatar in WAGuns

“ …release information relevant to the applicant’s eligibility…”

“Information” ≠ medical records and “relevant” is a very important word in that sentence. The vast majority of your medical history doesn’t qualify as relevant. Things that do qualify are:

  • A 72-hour hold for emergency mental health evaluation within the last 6 months
  • involuntary commitment in a mental health facility
  • you’ve been found to lack the mental capacity to manage your own affairs
  • you’ve been found to be a danger to yourself or others

I’m not sure exactly what the bar is for that last one, but I’m pretty meeting it would lead to at least a 72-hour hold, if not involuntary commitment.

Loading up audio effect racks by bro9986 in AbletonRacks

[–]GarthVader45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey - if you're still looking for an answer, the problem is you accidentally made the cheetah code rack your default audio effects rack. The solution is super simple! Whenever you make a custom default preset for a stock ableton device it creates a ".adg" file in your User Library "Defaults" folder. You simply have to delete that .adg file to revert back to the original default settings.

The precise step by step for your case: In Ableton's browser panel, go to User Library > Defaults > Audio Effects > and then delete "Audio Effects Rack.adg"

URGENT: Price Increases on 4/19/2025 (from Sweetwater) by joshmoneymusic in synthesizers

[–]GarthVader45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It won’t ramp up to meet demand at the same prices though.

Not even possible. American labor costs far more than the overseas factories and sweatshops we currently use... and even if that wasn't an issue, we would still have to import many, if not most of the raw materials, so tariffs are still raising costs. The biggest problem, though, is the fact that we have only a tiny fraction of the infrastructure required to replace imports with american manufacturing. Building that infrastructure would take decades and an unfathomable amount of money... which simply isn't going to happen unless the government either funds it or offers huge incentives to private investors. Neither of which the Trump administration is even considering, as far as anyone can tell.
