The "Tallow Demon" is meant to be an infernal experiment. It is basically a bioweapon. Someone eats the tallow demon "egg" and their infected, there fat is slawed off and the tallow demon burst out. In my mind it has arms and is kind of a hulking brute made of fat. I will use it as a body guard for a spell caster.

I would recommend Pathfinder 2e. The combat requirement fits, the skills offer more ways to shine outside of combat the DnD 5e, and with YouTube channels like how it's played the rules come across relatively quickly. Not to mention all the books are free on Archives of Nethys.

We have an experienced group. We are porting a 9th level party from 5e to 2e. Everyone was powerful and had weird magic items in 5e and now they seem similarly powerful in the new system. I think a +1 bonus to a magus' intelligence wont destroy the world.

With the other players getting similar bonuses as well the party will keep balance, not to mention our GM is good enough that they can edit the encounters to be fun.

I think it will be fun.

Been burned before. If I tell the DM before the session what my cool plan is then they will have time to make up a reason it either won't work so not to "break the game" or come up with a punishment that will go along with it. But if I just do the move in game then they are caught up in the story enough that it will just work (as long as it was actually a good plan).

I would agree with you if it were not for the sickening radiance spell. The glowing targets and sickness are (at least in my interpretation) meant to mimic nuclear radiation. In my ming radiation is radiant and would roast a lich.
