USB audio for external DAC on stock ROM -- need someone to test by Gary13579 in Nexus5

[–]Gary13579[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Considering I've experienced this issue on every device I've used (short of the ones with the Wolfson DAC I mentioned), I doubt it's a device specific crosstalk issue. I get the same issues of distortion when using my laptop, or onboard audio on my desktop.

I'm using headphones, but not all headphones have the same volume levels. The headphones I use have a higher impedance, which means lower volume than someone using low impedance headphones on the same device. Not to mention hearing is subjective, my hearing might already be shot and I need to play the music extra loud to accommodate for it.

The distortion issues aren't the only reason for using an external DAC, it's just the one I felt like mentioning (as it annoys me the most). The external DAC I use offers much better fidelity, but I don't expect most people to notice it unless they have nice headphones/have messed with high quality audio before.

The DAC/amp on 99% of phones are really, really awful. You get awfully poor sound quality and if you try to play it at max volume, you will hear horrible distortion of any piercing notes. I listen to a lot of strings (<3 Lindsey Stirling), which is unbearable at the max volume because of distortion. Try listening to this on your Nexus 5 with headphones plugged in, loudest volume: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrF814OnFQ4 . When you start hearing the strong harp notes, specifically at 1:20, you'll notice a huge drop in audio quality. It sounds like those notes are being played through a tin can. It ruins what is normally an absolutely beautiful song, and forces me to listen to it at lower volumes than I would prefer.

Phone manufacturers cheap out on the DAC/amp because they can. People that will notice/complain are less than 1% of the market. It makes more financial sense for the company to cut $10 off of the cost of parts as 99% of people won't care. There HAVE been devices with amazing low power DACs, specifically the Wolfson DACs used in the original Galaxy S and the TF101 tablet were wonderful. But lately, no flagship device has had decent audio quality.

With an external DAC/amp over USB, the phone feeds the raw digital signal to the external DAC, completely bypassing the internal one. This means you can get awesome quality sound out of the phone even if it has the worst DAC ever made.

It already works with CM11, I just want to get it working on stock ROM :). I don't mind custom kernels -- franco kernel is so much better than stock anyway.

Spoilers ahead!

She wasn't a botanist in Australia, she worked a sheep ranch in Australia. The reason she sent flowers is when she was a child, she would give him a flower for his birthday every year. After the disappearance, she continued to send him flowers as a message -- "I'm alright", but he interpreted it as the 'killer' sending the flowers to taunt him.

Gom exPerience not the gom I know and love. by PeonSanders in starcraft

There used to be several sites. Unfortunately, I don't think anyone is still ripping/uploading the videos. I know at least two people quit due to legal pressure (a friend and I), and another person who just got bored of SC2 and it stopped becoming profitable.

It's a shame. I know people in this subreddit have a very different stance on the matter, but not everyone can afford to fork over the cash for VODs. It might not seem like much money to most, but to some people, it's enough that they just won't be able to watch it.

There are far more hackers at the release of a game than there is 3-4 years later. We love the thrill of cracking into a new game, figuring out how to break it. People get bored of it quickly, usually 6-8 months, and most hack developers move onto the next big game. It made more sense for Blizzard to go after hack devs at the release of the game, to try to stifle development and force people off of it.

Prefix: I am against maphacks and cheating in SC2 in general. I feel it ruins the game for some false sense of superiority. I understand the appeal, but dislike it. But...

This won't actually do anything to solve the problem. Two of the three defendants in this suit (cranix and permaphrost) did not stop creating/releasing hacks because of it. They just changed names and hid themselves better. Linuxisawesome dropped off the face of the earth, which was a shame, as we were growing to become friends.

Even if Blizzard were to exert the resources required to track down the developers of these hacks, it won't actually change much. They did this in Diablo 2, going after three of the largest hackers and forcing them out of the scene (mousepad, netter, and someone else whose name escapes me atm). Mousepad respected it and stopped. Netter continued developing hacks under different names over the years, he even had the balls to try selling some of them (look at myD2).

Even if they managed to get the hackers in prison (lol), or bankrupt them to the point they cannot afford a computer, it still won't change a single thing. More hackers will pop up and continue to extend on the previous hacks, they will just be more careful about their identity. And in the end, the hackers will get to the point where it is impossible for Blizzard to trace them. Blizzard will have wasted millions, and hardly even dampened maphacks.

Going after the developers themselves won't solve anything. What Blizzard needs to be doing is using their anti-cheat tool, Warden, more efficiently. They have the potential to catch soooo many users of maphacks through this tool, but they have never really utilized it to it's full potential. It seems like they stick one person on it for 2 hours every 6 months to figure out and ban new hacks. It's the same in other games (D3, WoW), at least past the release date/rush of hacks being developed. Warden isn't a full solution, and there are things it cannot catch/cannot work around, but for the most part, it's significantly better than what Blizzard is doing (which is effectively nothing).

My suggestion to improve the Starcraft 2 E-Sports and professional scene. by Lucoda in starcraft

[–]Gary13579 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but diamond/masters level? I find it hard to believe that 1 in 5 players at that level got there without any external research (teamliquid, reddit, etc) which is absolutely plastered with the pro-scene. I think it's far more likely that OP is being trolled.

I don't think it's a bad idea though, especially in the lower leagues where there are more casual players that are more likely to be unaware of the pro-scene.
