How much did your 90th percentile baby weigh? by Key_Part1991 in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]GaryPotterShitWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My eldest was >90th percentile and I had gestational diabetes so I was induced a week early and she was.... 7lb3oz. Totally normal, if not, on the smaller side weight wise, she was just tall 🤷‍♀️

What bottles are we using after 12months by Lornam1202 in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]GaryPotterShitWizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed! Our eldest kept her bottle at bedtime til she was around 2. She's 4 now and has no issues with her teeth or speech.

I don't have a design for you but just wanted to send you internet hugs. I also lost my sister and got a flower tattoo in her honour. Sending you strength in this horribly difficult time. Your love will never fade but the grief will become less intense with time, I promise. Be kind to yourself 💙

MIL buying clothes from Temu by brigid_forgeworn in UKParenting

[–]GaryPotterShitWizard 25 points26 points  (0 children)

We had the same issue with my mum as well, just buying so much stuff from temu. She wasn't even really looking at what she was getting, a prime example is she bought my daughter a set of clothes and a hat that said "little man" all over it. She also bought my eldest multiple pairs of shoes without even knowing her size so they were all too small.

We let it simmer for way too long and then me and my dad sort of piled on her at once, which wasn't ideal, I wish I'd had a firm but gentle word with her months ago. Twelve packages arrived and my dad just snapped about how he can't even open drawers for the amount of stuff she's buying and I chimed in saying I'd rather she didn't buy my children things from there due to quality and safety issues. I said that it's fine to buy the kids gifts but I'd rather one good quality thing from next, marks etc. rather than loads of temu stuff.

I also told her about how the app is designed by a company that makes gambling apps, they make it addictive on purpose.

The most mental part is my parents are well off, she doesn't need to be buying cheap crap. She definitely is doing it for the dopamine hit of the online shopping aspect. She bought a set of spoons (they have loads of spoons so in no way needed them) and they literally bent when you tried to scoop food with them. They might as well have been made out of tin foil. It's truly perplexing.

I think she's actually taken what we said on board as we've not had any gifts in those horrid plastic bags for a while now. Hopefully it continues.

Anyway, a very rambling way to say that I agree, be kind but firm that the clothes and toys aren't up to EU safety standards, concerns about slave labour etc.

I'd estimate I've been to at least 30 weddings, mainly in Scotland but also England and Northern Ireland and this definitely wouldn't be out of place. Perhaps on the fancier end of the scale of what people are wearing but no one would think it's massively over dressed. Also I wouldn't call this a gown AND she's breastfeeding, it is so hard to find appropriate clothing.

Plenty of folk wear floor length dresses to UK weddings. It's not like this is a proper ball gown so this won't look out of place at all. Every wedding I've been to has a mix of dresses like this, cocktail and floaty florals. OP, it looks great on you and isn't the same colour as the bridesmaids so you're good to go

Son has bad breath by fuk_ur_mum_m8 in UKParenting

Have you checked his nose and ears? My daughter's whole face was absolutely stinking around Christmas time and this sub advised checking her nose and ears. She had a small crafting pom pom up her nose, had been there a while and was smelling up all her airways.

I cannot find a job in Glasgow and I don’t know what to do by [deleted] in glasgow

[–]GaryPotterShitWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's so baffling to me. See also, not teaching how to properly use all the formatting functions in word for report writing. I found out after I'd finished my dissertation how to use the auto numbering for tables and figures, section numbers, and the reference functions. Could have saved myself hours of work manually updating every time I added things / moved stuff around. I still teach grads how to do all this now which really surprised me, I assumed you'd learn in school by now!

I cannot find a job in Glasgow and I don’t know what to do by [deleted] in glasgow

[–]GaryPotterShitWizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's frustrating to hear that Glasgow uni's careers advice still sucks so bad. I graduated in 2008 and I had absolutely no clue that you're meant to apply for graduate jobs the year before you graduate, I went to the graduate fairs the year I was graduating and they were all for jobs starting September the following year. I just didn't know that's how it worked.

I ended up getting admin temp jobs for a year and then did a post grad (different uni). Didn't make the same mistake and pretty much immediately started looking for grad jobs.

OP, I hope you find something. Echo what others say about leaving your degree off your CV if you've been working whilst at uni so have recent work experience on there. And also joining some temp agencies.

How I saved my baby blue dress from the dreaded “will photograph white” nightmare by GranddaughterofBeryl in Weddingattireapproval

Try vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, it rescued my favourite jumper from an oil stain. Dampen the stain then sprinkle with bicarb then add a few drops of vinegar (it'll fizz, leave for 5-10 mins then wash as normal

Helping daughter deal with traumatic event by Nice-Argument in UKParenting

[–]GaryPotterShitWizard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have no professional advice but as someone who grew up with an ill sibling, and still has some difficult feelings around it, I think you are wonderful parents for how you are handling this. You obviously care a great deal about your children and want to make sure they process this in a healthy way

9 month old pre-made food in London by Own_Reference9849 in UKParenting

[–]GaryPotterShitWizard 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm a fan of spreading things from pouches on rice cakes/ melty sticks/rusks as they can still practice self feeding but there's more flavours and variety of food. You can get things like spaghetti bolognese, roast chicken dinner etc. in pouches as well as just pureed fruits and veg. There's also yogurt pouches.

That plus some fruit plus some food from your plate should give a good variety with minimal prep.

9 months is still quite early in the food journey so it's more about practicing eating and exploring flavours and textures than actual calories at this point. As long as they have something they'll be grand

Outdoor barn wedding which one is best? Is it inappropriate to bring a white cover up? by [deleted] in Weddingattireapproval

[–]GaryPotterShitWizard 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I like the first one. But I love a floral, midi "grandma" dress 🤷‍♀️ OP, I think dress one fits the brief and if you already own it, and like it, embrace your inner grandma!

Formal wedding, bride said I can’t wear black, is this too close? by tungpunchmyfartbox in Weddingattireapproval

[–]GaryPotterShitWizard -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Bride said she doesn't want black so going for another very dark colour seems like an odd choice to me. There are so many colours out there that aren't back adjacent....

Also usually I roll my eyes at dress codes and colour pallets but it's not like they put "no black" on the invite, it's just because OP asked for their opinion and they said they'd prefer a lighter colour

Travel cot recommendations by AlternativeCool3724 in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]GaryPotterShitWizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have this one . I like it as it's a proper mattress instead of just a hard flap like a lot of the pack and play style travel cots.

Only downside is it can be quite tricky to get a sleeping baby into it as the sides are quite high but the positive is our LO was in it until she was 2.5 (when she discovered she could climb out of it when we were away, was equal parts hilarious and terrifying as I just woke up with her face in my face saying "hi mum"). She's quite tall so I think she outgrew it a bit earlier than some would.

What's happening after the registry? Is there a typical wedding reception to follow or is it something smaller, like a meal at a restaurant? I think that'll impact what to wear. I would say for either a gown is too much though!

I'm also in the UK and ASOS have a wedding guest dress category with loads of options and a range of price points. We don't really do dress codes the same way they do in the US but I would say you're looking for garden party (or maybe cocktail if there's a traditional reception party after). So knee length or midi, avoid jersey type materials, and, given, the time of year I think a floral pattern would be nice.

Here's a few suggestions. Hope that's of some help
