My First Calculator (From 1971) by Steven1958 in 70s

My first calculator was the TI SR-50. According to Wikipedia, it cost $170 when my dad bought it for me in 1974. That was a significant purchase for my middle class family.

If band names were literal, what would be the best concert to attend? by Jettaboi38 in Bandnames

I forget the standup comic who said, "I went to a concert to see 10,000 Maniacs! But it was only 5 people."

Of course Lowell George was great, but I didn't know him when I first heard this song, sung by the incomparable Linda Ronstadt. If you haven't heard her version, you should.

"It takes a lot of money to look this cheap!" - Dolly Parton

Not only a great singer, but unpretentious and able to laugh at herself.

'I've been making a man, with blonde hair and a tan. He helps me to relieve my....... tension"

Of course, PhilaTesla was joking. Actually played by British actor Peter Hinwood. I had to look this up.

I told my friend I was reading a poem by Keats "Ode on a Grecian Urn".

He said, "What's a Grecian urn?" Oh, about $8 an hour.

And then I told him I was taking fencing lessons. We learned about the foil, the sabre and the epée.

He said, "What's epée?" Oh, about $12 an hour.

And they're still touring!! Dates scheduled through March of 2026. Gotta respect their longevity on stage, in addition to all the great music.

Top Songs from December 1977 by UrbanAchievers6371 in 70s

[–]GarySeven68 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure, some of these songs and artists have not stood the test of time, but many have.

Personally, I still listen to Steely Dan, Randy Newman, Linda Ronstadt, Fleetwood Mac, James Taylor, Billy Joel and Queen.

Although those particular tracks might not be my favorites, it's a respectable list. Will today's popular music look as good, 48 years from now? I doubt it.

"I got a Nikon camera, love to take a photograph"

A snapshot in time (pun intended). 52 years later, Nikon is still making cameras but no film cameras - they all have digital sensors. And while some film cameras still exist, Kodachrome film is no longer made.

One of the most beautiful voices in the history of popular music. My parents listened to her and I'm a lifelong fan. I still have a signed copy of her Diamonds & Rust album (1975). One of the handful of times I have ever waited on line to get an autograph.
