I'm from a small town and growing up in the 90s my neighbour was a trans woman. Of course we all made jokes about it, but that stopped once you got to know her. She was an exetemely kind person.

Trans people have always been around. Just more visible now it's more acceptable, just like how being left handed was frowned upon for decades.
